Forty-Three Years of Faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology of the University of Silesia in Katowice (1976–2019) – Achievements: Scientific Journals, Academic Qualifications, Staff, Grants and Scientific Output

The article is devoted to the scientific, didactic and organizational achievements of the Faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology of the University of Silesia in Katowice from its foundation to the newest times (1976–2019). It presents the origins of the Faculty, including the functioning of education in the field of pedagogy and psychology in the structure of the Higher School of Pedagogy in Katowice, and then in the structure of the University of Silesia, the evelopment of the scientific and teaching staff (obtaining subsequent degrees and titles, scientific publications) and the basis for the Faculty to obtain full academic qualifications in the field of pedagogy. Also, the journals published by the Faculty have been characterized.

The article is devoted to the analysis of scientific achievements of researchers and teachers of the Department of Early Childhood Education and Media Pedagogy of the University of Silesia in Katowice during forty years of its functioning in this academic centre. The article presents the researchers and didactic workers who substantially contributed to the scientific and didactic development of the Department of Early Childhood Education and Media Pedagogy. Throughout 40 years of activity, the Department, as a unit being a part of Faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology of the University of Silesia, has cooperated with many prominent figures from regional, national and foreign academic centers. Currently, the Department implements an intensive research programme, takes part in the doctoral and postdoctoral promotions as well as successfully undertakes the education of students specializing in teaching

The 40th anniversary of the Department of Early Childhood Education and Media Pedagogy encourages a reflection on the directions of scientific research activities that have been undertaken by the institution and its members, the education of students in the changing social, political and educational environment, its mission in the field of training early education teachers or the long-termactivities of the department employees related to the popularization of pedagogical issues in the environment. This study provides an overview of the educational offer, study programmes, curriculum content at the University of Silesia and competences of future and active teachers of kindergartens and primary school classes in the last forty years.

The aim of the article is to present the achievements of the employees of the Department of Early Childhood Education and Media Pedagogy in mathematical education over forty years of its functioning.. Mathematics is a particularly important area of teaching a young child, which builds the basis for later education and largely determines its success or failure. It is a subject that is difficult by its very nature, and its hierarchical structure means that each element must be well mastered. That is why it is so important to train the teachers of kindergarten and primary education so that they can build a good basis for teaching this subject.

The article presents a concept of including child expression, especially the one focused on bodily activity, in activities addressed to pupils of kindergarten and of grades 1–3 of primary school. The text begins with an outline of Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s idea of embodied subjectivity, and concludes with the characteristics of research conducted in the Department of Early Childhood Education and Media Pedagogy at the University of Silesia in Katowice. In addition, the article describes specific initiatives that have been launched in the Department, such as the creation of the Children’s Expression Centre and the organisation of Polish Expression Festivals in Katowice.

The article presents the problem of using drama in the development of social and emotional competences of children in early school age. In preschool and early school age children undergo many dynamic developmental changes, especially in the area of social, emotional, cognitive and communication development. All these changes help children better understand and organize the world around them and think about it in a creative and increasingly independent and complex way. Children develop their metacognitive abilities, they better understand their own emotions and behavior, and at the same time, assimilate the norms and principles of social life. In the article, the author points to the possibility of using drama to support emotional and social development of a child. Drama, thanks to the fact that it oscillates between fiction and reality, gives the possibility of safe exploration of various social and moral attitudes and expression of emotions. The article is a kind of summary of the most important notions and dimensions of the use of drama in work with children of early school age in the last two decades.

The present text is an effect of considerations devoted to art education of an early-school child focused on stimulating children’s creativity and artistic imagination. The first part of the article presents considerations regarding the issue of artistic imagination and creativity. The second part discusses the concept of designing artistic activities at the level of early school education as a stimulator of imagination and child creativity. The third part of the article is an attempt to present the possibilities of using the techniques of contemporary art as a platform for pedagogical activities.

The paper characterizes the problem of research in the field of media pedagogy conducted in the team functioning in the Department of Early Childhood Education and Media Pedagogy at the University of Silesia in Katowice. Selected research areas conducted by individual members of the team are presented against the background of the development of media pedagogy in Poland. The research concerned sharenting, educational benefits achieved by students through the media, media education of parents, use of computers in pre-school education, persuasive messages or shaping competence in the field of information technology among the Masai on African land. The wide spectrum of analyses undertaken by the media pedagogy team is also the result of the team’s cooperation with various research centres in Poland and abroad.

Edukacja przedszkolna. Pomiędzy paradygmatem technologicznym a humanistycznym
Pre-school Education. Between the Paradigms of Technology and Humanism

Pre-school education, as the first level of general human education, has been an important area in the 40-year work of the Department of Early Childhood Education and Media Pedagogy. During these years, the reality of pre-school education has undergone (and is still undergoing) a peculiar transition from the technological paradigm to the humanistic paradigm. In the technological approach, based on positive philosophy and behaviorism, the axis of education was the curriculum, and its central figure was the teacher. The role of the child consisted in adapting to the curriculum and the requirements of the kindergarten. Children’s needs and their capabilities were not exhibited in the process of education. In the education based on a humanistic approach, derived from anti-intellectual naturalism, pedagogical progressivism and humanistic psychology, the central figure is the child, and the main purpose of education is to support his/her development. The teacher is to be a helper, a guide and is to allow the child to grow according to his/her own developmental potential. Thus, the curriculum no longer plays the most important role, but the child does – the entity. Parents have also been involved in the process of pre-school education, and they have also gained a sense of subjectivity. Due to the fact that changes in education do not take place quickly, and the pre-school education system has been firmly fixed for several decades, it can be said that currently pre-school education is in the stage of searching for its (new) path. Some elements of the technological system are still present, but we also observe many changes towards humanistic, subjective education.
Pre-school education, as the first level of general human education, has been an important area in the 40-year work of the Department of Early Childhood Education and Media Pedagogy. In the technological approach, based on positive philosophy and behaviorism, the axis of education was the curriculum, and its central figure was the teacher. The role of the child consisted in adapting to the curriculum and the requirements of the kindergarten. Children’s needs and their capabilities were not exhibited in the process of education. In the education based on a humanistic approach, derived from anti-intellectual naturalism, pedagogical progressivism and humanistic psychology, the central figure is the child, and the main purpose of education is to support his/her development. The teacher is to be a helper, a guide and is to allow the child to grow according to his/her own developmental potential. Thus, the curriculum no longer plays the most important role, but the child does – the entity. Parents have also been involved in the process of pre-school education, and they have also gained a sense of subjectivity. Due to the fact that changes in education do not take place quickly, and the pre-school education system has been firmly fixed for several decades, it can be said that currently pre-school education is in the stage of searching for its (new) path. Some elements of the technological system are still present, but we also observe many changes towards humanistic, subjective education.

The article presents the development, directions and areas of scientific research conducted by scholars at the Department of Social Pedagogy at the University of Silesia in Katowice from the beginning of the Department’s existence (1980/1981) until 2018. The conducted analyses emphasize first of all the expansion of research areas and the successive formation of the so-called “school” of social pedagogy characteristic of our academic centre. The areas of interest of the Department’s research staff correspond to the cognitive and research needs resulting from the current socio-cultural transformations that are significant for the course of socialization and upbringing processes. The results of scientific research have been reflected, among others, in scientific publications (monographs and articles), and the titles of the most important ones are given in the article.

The author describes, from the perspective of 40th anniversary of the Department of Social Pedagogy at the University of Silesia, the period of his leadership of this scientific department in the years 1980–2010. Moreover, the author tries to characterise the activities of the Department in the era of socialism and in later years, after 1989, in the period of post-communist social changes. He expects that comparative studies will enable to find the elements of continuity and change in the last decade, when the emphasis has been placed not only at the preservation, but also at the reinforcement of the tradition of social sciences in Poland.

Social Participation of Children. Sketch of Discourse Dynamics

In the contemporary world social participation of children is seen as an idea that should be implemented at various social levels. The idea itself is understood multi-dimensionally – as various social activities, including the participation in decision-making processregarding children’s matters. Today in a discourse on children’s participation its collective dimension is accented, which means social participation and access to social and civil goods of children as a social group. In the discourse on participation, which has been developing dynamically since the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, various theories are used as a background against which children’s participationis considered and justified. The paper presents an outline of this problem and current tendencies in the discourse.

Social Pedagogy towards the Other. Solidarity with the Other in the Context of Globalisation

The subject of the analyses undertaken in this article is solidarity with the Other in global society. The first part of the article focuses on the status of the Other (the outline is based on the characteristics presented by Claude Lévi-Strauss, George Simmel, Zygmunt Bauman, Bernhard Waldenfels and Emmanuel Lévinas). The subject of the second part is the category of solidarity – its analysis has been made by referring to the sociological and axiological perspective. In the third part, which is a kind of summary, the ambivalence of the status of the Other in the context of globalization is presented.

Methodological Solutions in Research on Racism and Xenophobia in Children – Analysis Review

The article is a review of research on racist feelings, attitudes and behaviours in relation to children. The authors focus on research tools used, including Clark Doll Test, Preschool Attitude Measure or Sticker Test. The analyses have shown that the phenomenon of racism and xenophobia is being increasingly raised in the scientific discourse in the context of this age group. In addition, it is emphasized that the concepts of race, religion or social class as key determinants of the place of man in society are unethical and immoral.

Implications of the Theory of Social Disorganization for Social Policy and Socio-Pedagogical Work in Metropolitan Environments

The article describes how social disorganization is conditioned by such phenomena as social cohesion, informal social control and the ability of the community to control criminal behaviour. The article reviews the research indicating the harmful practice of creating social housing zones in large cities, in which young people with low cultural and economic capital are concentrated. This tendency is not matched by the regularity of high cohesion and high informal social control in ethnically distinct neighbourhoods, but uniform in this respect, which has been revealed in the research. The response of educators, social workers, and youth activists to disadvantage areas is the organization of street work centers and group work centers in these places.

Women, Mothers and Special Needs Children – Pedagogical and Penitentiary Problems

This article concerns the analyses and research on women and men coming from penitentiary correction centres and the youth from families at risk of delinquency. The research problem concentrates on the analysis of criminals who are parents and situations of children in historical and contemporary context as well as on specific difficulties in the functioning of special-needs children in social life in terms of special education. This article can inspire a new approach to dealing with criminals, enhancing their role as parents, which constitutes an important factor in the process of corrective actions.

The present text is an attempt to draw social attention to the place and role of art in the social/public space, and thus the artistic and social impact of art arranged in this space. Art, apart from its artistic and aesthetic value, has a social-educational and utilitarian value. Presenting works of art in public space can not only revise the way of thinking about art / perception of art, but also develop the need to implement its potential in everyday life. The artistic and social dimension of art is a peculiar configuration of good, truth and beauty – values so socially desirable.

Health inequalities are being increasingly considered in describing population health and creating health policies. Particular emphasis is put on the so-called social inequalities, however, it is emphasized that they may also be conditioned by biological or environmental factors. The latter type of inequalities is the subject of interest in the present study. The presented research results are a part of wider diagnostic activities that were undertaken within the Onkogranty II project. They include a comparison of data on the epidemiology of cancer caused by low physical activity and poor diet in the province of Silesia and throughout the country.

Investigations of social pedagogy are nowadays more and more frequently focused on areas which cover a wider context and go beyond one’s own scientific discipline. There is diagnostic research on recognizing health state of certain social groups or communities. The article presents the research results of subjective assessment of health state of the residents of Tychy. However, it is only a part of a larger project which began in April 2017, whose goal is to create Social and pedagogic model of local diagnosis and social participation in terms of health protection and promotion. The conclusions reached may contribute to actions aimed at increasing the health potential of local communities.

The generation of the turn of the 20th/21st century is given to live in a new, changing reality. Modern, young generation entering adulthood is brought up in a post-transformation society, dominated by consumption, accelerated pace of life and threats occurring in all spheres of its functioning. In Poland, socio-cultural transformation has become for young adults not only a source of new challenges, opportunities, but also of threats. The consequences of the transformations are difficulties of (especially) the young generation in adapting to the ever-changing, unstable reality. The rapid changes in the surrounding reality have inspired research on the problems of growing up (including risky and harmful behaviours), and the difficulties of a generation growing up in an unstable reality.

Critique, Resistance, Hope: On Henry A. Giroux’s Political Journalism

W artykule ustosunkowuję się do Henry’ego A. Giroux postulatu myślenia o nauczycielach akademickich jako publicznych i transformatywnych intelektualistach oraz do jego twierdzenia o konieczności politycznego zaangażowania humanistyki, zwłaszcza pedagogiki. Wskazuję różne czynniki zagrażające realizacji tych zadań, takie jak: dominacja ideologii neoliberalnej, ofensywa rynkowego fundamentalizmu, nieselektywny nabór kandydatów na studia przez uczelnie i wydziały humanistyczne. Za Giroux podkreślam rolę dyskursu nadziei i możliwości jako koniecznego uzupełnienia krytyki pojętej jako demaskowanie „fałszywej świadomości”, chociaż stronię od nadmiernego w moim uznaniu optymizmu amerykańskiego pedagoga i jego wiary w krytyczny potencjał i obywatelską sprawczość współczesnej młodzieży oraz w możliwość przejęcia przez nauczycieli akademickich kontroli nad warunkami swojej pracy.
The article discusses and problematizes Henry Giroux’s postulate to construe academic teachers as public and transformative intellectuals along with his claim that both humanities and social sciences, notably pedagogy, ought to be thought of as politically engaged. The author of the article indicates different factors thwarting the implementation of those postulates, such as: the dominance of neoliberal ideology, the onslaught of market fundamentalism, and an unselective manner in which students are enrolled into universities, in particular humenities’ departments. Following in Giroux’s footsteps, the author undescores the role played by the discourse of possibility and hope, as a necessary complement to the criticism conceived of as stripping away the “false consciousness,” yet – at the same time – he steers clear of the over-optimitic belief espoused by Giroux about the contemporary young people’s critical potential and civic agency, as well as the feasibility of reclaiming power over the conditions of their work by academicians.

Tekst nawiązuje do debat w ramach X Ogólnopolskiego Zjazdu Pedagogicznego (zorganizowanego w 2019 roku w Warszawie przez Polskie Towarzystwo Pedagogiczne), zainicjowanych przez Lecha Witkowskiego w ramach sympozjum specjalnego na temat: Dziedzictwo idei i dramat losów czołowych postaci pedagogiki polskiej w XX wieku: historia, analiza i krytyka więzi i pęknięć międzypokoleniowych. Jest próbą ukazania możliwych impulsów płynących z paradygmatu dwoistości dla poszerzenia pola widzenia obszarów współczesnej pedagogiki zdrowia. Ukazuje rysujące się przy tym problemy, związane z szacowaniem dorobku przeszłości, określeniem specyfiki pokolenia, zawartości archiwum pedagogicznego i dwoistości widocznych współcześnie w pedagogice zdrowia.
The text refers to the debates of the 10th All‑Poland Pedagogical Congress (organized in Warsaw by the Polish Pedagogical Association), and instigated by Lech Witkowski as part of the Special Symposium on the subject: The Heritage of Ideas and the Dramatic Fates of the Leading Figures of Polish Pedagogy in the 20th Century: History, Analysis, and Criticism of the Intergenerational Ties and Breaks-offs. The study is an attempt to show the possible impulses resulting from the duality paradigm for broadening the scope of modern health pedagogy. It also shows issues that arise, which are related to estimating the achievements of the past, determining the specifics of the generation, the content of the pedagogical archive, and duality visible today in health pedagogy.

Thinking Dangerously: The Role of Higher Education in Authoritarian Times

The notion of a neutral, objective education is an oxymoron. Education and pedagogy do not exist outside of ideology, values and politics. Ethics, when it comes to education, demand an openness to the other, a willingness to engage a “politics of possibility” through a continual critical engagement with texts, images, events and other registers of meaning as they are transformed into pedagogical practices both within and outside of the classroom. Education is never innocent: It is always implicated in relations of power and specific visions of the present and future. This suggests the need for educators to rethink the cultural and ideological baggage they bring to each educational encounter. It also highlights the necessity of making educators ethically and politically accountable for and self-reflective about the stories they produce, the claims they make upon public memory, and the images of the future they deem legitimate.

The Curse of Totalitarianism and the Challenge of Critical Pedagogy

Expanding critical pedagogy as a mode of public pedagogy suggests being attentive to and addressing modes of knowledge and social practices in a variety of sites that not only encourage critical thinking, thoughtfulness and meaningful dialogue, but also offer opportunities to mobilize instances of moral outrage, social responsibility and collective action. Such mobilization opposes glaring material inequities and the growing cynical belief that today’s culture of investment and finance makes it impossible to address many of the major social problems facing the United States, Canada, Latin America and the larger world. Most importantly, such work points to the link between civic education, critical pedagogy and modes of oppositional political agency that are pivotal to creating a politics that promotes democratic values, relations, autonomy and social change.

At its best education is dangerous because it offers young people and other actors the promise of racial and economic justice, a future in which democracy becomes inclusive and a dream in which all lives matter. In a healthy society universities should be subversive; they should go against the grain, and give voice to the voiceless, the unmentionable and the whispers of truth that haunt the apostles of unchecked power and wealth. Pedagogy should be disruptive and unsettling and push hard against the common sense vocabularies of neoliberalism and its regime of affective management.

What Kind of Critical Pedagogy is (Un)Feasible in Poland and Why? (a Meta-critical Essay with Henry A. Giroux in the Backdrop)

The text undertakes the problematics situated between modernity and tradition regarding the reception of H.A. Giroux’s works in Poland, in a view of furthering the study of pedagogy and educational praxis. First, the author outlines the beginnings of openness towards critical pedagogy. What is underscored here is the 1980s’ main inspiration drawn from the resistance paradigm. Then, the author proceeds to the current state of Giroux’s reception in Poland. He illustrates differences among particular examples and levels of the said reception of Giroux’s pedagogy and of the scholar’s theoretical background. The emphasized disputes pertain especially to transcending metaphysics and relativism as a challenge faced by hermeneutical criticism and critical hermeneutics. Additionally, the “critical” horizon of the main handbook of pedagogy used in Polish universities is discussed. The author point to the wasteful efforts at instigating the breakthrough in the reception of critical pedagogy and he exemplifies them by an instance of misbegotten analysis of the allegedly delayed critical pedagogy of work. As a particularly positive example the author presents a new effort at developing critical hermeneutics (and radical praxis) for pedagogy by Andrzej Wierciński. In the concluding part written “in lieuof conclusions,” four lists of critical problems’ dislocations are provided; the problems are both convergent and related to one another, thereby redefining current research objectives and pertain to practical applications in educational praxis.

The Reception of Postmodernism in Peter McLaren’s Radical Pedagogy

The aim of this paper is to comprehensively reconstruct the reception of postmodernism in Peter McLaren’s critical/radical pedagogy. On a more general level, the article discusses the pedagogical perils of uncriticalinfatuation with poststructuralist and postmodernist principles of dismantling grand metanarratives and debunking the notions of truth, totality, and universalism and replacing them with the notions of pluralism and perspectivism. The author seeks to verify the statement that McLaren’s response to postmodern developments in philosophy and social theory is in as much similar to that of Henry Giroux’s that it produces a project of education informed by postmodern ideas. The thesis – advanced in the mid 1990s by Tomasz Szkudlarek – is refuted on the basis of thorough a analysis of both earlier and more contemporary texts of McLaren where the main tenets of postmodern theory are severely criticized. The argument about the evolution of McLaren’s thought from a cautious appropriation of some elements of postmodernism to its downright condemnation is supported by the theory of its increasing radicalization under the influence of Marxism. The alternative to the illusory radicality of postmodernism – denounced as affirming the status-quo – is “pedagogy of revolution,” which emerges as strictly political, interventionist praxis whose aim is no longer discourse analysis but concrete social struggle against the oppressive capitalist class relations.

Kryzys więzi międzyludzkich jako kryzys kultury emocjonalnej
A Crisis of Interpersonal Bonds as a Crisis of Emotional Culture

W artykule podjęto próbę wskazania symptomów kryzysu więzi międzyludzkich w perspektywie kryzysu kultury emocjonalnej. Trzonem analiz przyczyn i symptomów kryzysu więzi są pojęcia związane ze zwrotem emocjonalnym w kulturze (emotional turn) i dyskursywnym wymiarem życia afektywnego. Kryzys kultury emocjonalnej w tekście opisywany jest w wymiarze ochładzania intymności oraz postępującej indywidualizacji, która wypiera wspólnotowość celów i postaw. Główną tezą tekstu jest, iż inwazyjność dyskursów eksperckich oraz kultury konsumpcyjnej prowadzi do ochładzania wzorów kultury emocjonalnej, racjonalizowania sfery prywatnej i łamania obwarowań aksjonormatywnych, które regulują postawy społeczne, także w wymiarze tworzenia i utrzymywania więzi międzyludzkich.
The article attempts to describe the symptoms of the crisis of interpersonal bonds in the perspective of the crisis of emotional culture. The core of the analyzes of the causes and symptoms of the crisis of interpersonal ties are the concepts related to the emotional turn and the discursive dimension of affective life. The crisis of emotional culture is described in the text in the light of progressive individualization and diminishing intimacy, which supersedes the commonality of goals and attitudes. The main thesis of the text is that the invasiveness of expert discourses and consumer culture leads to the wind-down of emotional culture, rationalization of the private sphere and breaking axio-normative constraints that regulate social attitudes, also in the dimension of creating and maintaining interpersonal bonds.

Transformations and Their Dominants: Between the Dynamic and Structure of Processuality

W tekście metapedagogiczne konteksty transformacyjne w przestrzeniach działań i losów ludzkich omówiono z wykorzystaniem hermeneutyki, refleksji krytycznej, psychoanalizy, antropologii i projektu „humanistyki stosowanej”. Poruszono następujące problemy: 1) przemieszczanie dominanty wśród czynników w procesach i praktykach zawodowych, takich jak: dialog, racjonalność działań, rozumienie tradycji, wolności, zmiany, ideału przestrzeni działania; 2) transwersalność, dwoistość strukturalna i oscylacje wokół dylematów działania i dominant w rozwoju psychospołecznym; 3) pułapki, ograniczenia i luki w tradycyjnych ujęciach relacji między czynnikami w transformacji tożsamościowej człowieka, gubiące nieciągłości i napięcia wewnętrzne; 4) przełom antypozytywistyczny w rozumiejącym wyjaśnianiu procesów oraz troisty „efekt wybuchowy” w transformacjach reprezentacji emocjonalno-poznawczej podmiotów działających, w tym ich autotransformacji i przymierza interakcyjnego w działaniu; 5) inne ujęcia wskazanej konceptualizacji.
This article discusses meta-pedagogical transformation contexts in the areas of human actions and the course of human life from the perspectives of hermeneutics, critical reflection, psychoanalysis, anthropology, and the project of “applied humanities.” The following problems are addressed: 1) Shifts of the dominant among factors participating in professional processes and practices, such as dialogue, the rationality of actions, the understanding of tradition, freedom, changes, and the ideal of the space of actions; 2) Transversality, structural duality, and oscillations around dilemmas of action and dominants in psychosocial development; 3) Traps, limitations, and gaps in traditional approaches to relations between factors in a person’s identity transformation; losing track of discontinuities and internal tensions; 4) The anti-positivist breakthrough in considering the explanations of processes and the trifold “explosion effect” in transformations of agents’ emotive-cognitive representations, including their auto-transformations and interactive alliance in actions; 5) Alternative approaches to the conceptualizations presented in this article.

W artykule podjęto temat cielesnych aspektów kryzysu emocji i kryzysu więzi. Rozważania opierają się na socjologicznej teorii emocji Thomasa J. Scheffa oraz Suzanne Retzinger, którzy podkreślali znaczenie więzi społecznych w rozwiązywaniu konfliktów i radzeniu sobie z trudnościami. Każda odczuwana emocja ma swój odpowiednik motoryczny w ciele, które pamięta traumatyczne doświadczenie oraz, szeroko rozumiane, konflikty i wynikające z nich obciążenia. Gdy nagromadzone emocje nie znajdują ujścia, ciało może chorować. Aby temu zapobiec, istotne są interwencje psychologiczne z równoległą pracą na poziomie ciała. Studia przypadków, które są ważną częścią opracowania, ukazują, w jaki sposób – poprzez choreoterapię i czynniki leczące – kryzysowość zmienia znaczenie, a napięcia emocjonalne minimalizują się.
This article discusses bodily aspects of emotional crises and crises of interpersonal ties. The analysis is based on the sociological theory of emotions by Thomas J. Scheff and Suzanne Retzinger, who emphasized the importance of interpersonal ties for the resolution of conflicts and for successful coping with difficulties. Every emotion has its own motor equivalent in the body, which records and stores traumatic experiences and broadly understood conflicts together with the resulting stress. If the accumulated emotions are not released, the body may get sick, which is why psychological interventions must be combined with parallel work on the body. Case studies, which constitute an important part of the author’s research, show the significance and effectiveness of choreotherapy, which, in combination with other treatment methods, helps to resolve crises and reduce emotional strain.

Utopia of School, Disobedience, and Translation. Two Biblical Myths in the Interpretation of Erich Fromm and George Steiner
Utopia szkoły, nieposłuszeństwo i przekład. Dwa biblijne mity w odczytaniach Ericha Fromma i George’a Steinera

It can be assumed that two biblical myths ‒ about Adam and Eve leaving the Garden of Eden and about the builders from Babel ‒ are interesting expressions of the utopian imagination, because these myths narrate about two places where projects of sufficiently perfect social order were implemented in two different ways. At present, the school is one of the places that could be understood as the ambiguous effect of an implemented utopia of the industrial revolution era; the school is an education space designed as an important part of the project of a sufficiently perfect social order. Two original readings of the mentioned biblical myths ‒ by Erich Fromm and George Steiner ‒ shall contribute some new themes and outlooks to the discussion of the condition of the modern school and the discourses of critical pedagogy or the pedagogy of resistance and hermeneutic pedagogy.
Można przyjąć, że dwa biblijne mity – o wyjściu Adama i Ewy z ogrodu Eden oraz o budowniczych wieży Babel – są interesującymi ekspresjami wyobraźni utopijnej, ponieważ opowiadają o dwóch miejscach, w których na dwa odmienne sposoby realizowano projekty wystarczająco doskonałego porządku społecznego. Współcześnie jednym z takich miejsc, które możemy rozumieć jako niejednoznaczny efekt realizacji utopii epoki rewolucji przemysłowej, jest szkoła – przestrzeń edukacji zaplanowana jako ważna część projektu wystarczająco doskonałego porządku społecznego. Dwa oryginalne odczytania – autorstwa Ericha Fromma i George’a Steinera – przywołanych biblijnych mitów posłużą wzbogaceniu o nowe wątki i podejścia dyskusji o kondycji współczesnej szkoły oraz dyskursów pedagogiki krytycznej czy pedagogiki oporu i pedagogiki hermeneutycznej.

Likwidacja Europy. Totalizm i demokracja w rozważaniach Zygmunta Mysłakowskiego

Autor artykułu omawia treść książki Zygmunta Mysłakowskiego z 1938 roku zatytułowanej Totalizm czy kultura, wskazuje przy tym na współbrzmienie zawartych w niej diagnoz sytuacji społeczno-politycznej końca lat trzydziestych XX wieku z Timothy’ego Snydera opisem drugiej dekady XXI wieku. Możemy dostrzec analogię między dynamicznym wzrastaniem totalizmów w okresie międzywojnia a mechanizmami, które obserwować można w Europie, Ameryce, Rosji współcześnie. Zygmunt Mysłakowski i Timothy Snyder nie pozostawiają złudzeń w opisach swoich teraźniejszości. Okazuje się jednak, że w książce Mysłakowskiego obok głównej linii wywodu w postaci uznania demokracji współwystępuje – w warstwie merytorycznej niezgodne z tym pierwszym – uznanie dla postaci wodza (marszałka Józefa Piłsudskiego). Autor tekstu omawia to napięcie jako kontekst diagnoz czasów nam współczesnych.
Łukasz Michalski discusses the content of Zygmunt Mysłakowski’s 1938 book Totalizm czy kultura (Totalism or Culture). He points to the consonance between book’s diagnoses of the socio-political situation in the late 1930s and Timothy Snyder’s description of the second decade of the twenty-first century. He argues that we can see an analogy between the dynamic growth of totalisms in the interwar period and the mechanisms that can be observed in Europe, America, Russia today. Mysłakowski and Snyder leave no illusions in their descriptions of their present milieus. However, in Mysłakowski’s book there is a cognitive incongruity inasmuch as, alongside the main line of the argument with its recognition of the value of democracy, there is also an appreciation of the figure of the leader (Marshal Józef Piłsudski). Michalski examines this tension as the context of the diagnoses of our contemporary situation.

Następnie z zamieszczonych w numerze tekstów wydobywa strukturę zmiany, dającej się pomyśleć wedle pięciu aspektów: transformacji, utopii, kryzysu, retrospekcji oraz twórczości.
The text Editorial gives an introduction to the issue entitled “Chowanna”. Krzysztof Maliszewski considers here the possibility of changing unfavorable educational and socio-political trends with the help of, among other ideas, Alain Touraine’s sociology of the subject, Margaret Archer’s notion of agency, and William Ayers’s reflections on helplessness. Next, from the articles that make up this issue, Maliszewski extracts a structure of change which can be regarded according to these five aspects: transformation, utopia, crisis, retrospection, and creativity.

Personal Resources, Potential and Possibilities from the Perspective of Self-Realization
Zasoby, potencjał i możliwości człowieka w perspektywie samorealizacji

The aim of this article is to examine the orientation towards positive sources of development and creativity as well as boundaries and transgressions in the process of self-realization. This examination of the process of self-realization takes into account personal resources, potential and possibilities, and promotes a developmental vision of the person as an active being who creatively transforms the environment and themselves. A person’s motivation to pursue creative changes and to strive for achievements is related to human transgressiveness. The nature of self-realization according to Abraham Maslow is similar to Józef Kozielecki’s concept of transgression. It assumes that man is an active agent and that human agency is intentional, autonomous, and goal-oriented, and that it tends to transgress the existing possibilities. Halina Monika Wróblewska’s approach to self-realization, presented in this study, can help to the optimize human development and to make possible the expanding of the boundaries of the self. A person will embrace his or her creative competences through the process of self-realization and thanks to transgressive activities.
Celem tekstu jest ukazanie orientacji na pozytywne źródła rozwoju i twórczości oraz granic i transgresji w procesie samorealizacji. Przyjęte na potrzeby opracowania spojrzenie uwzględniające zasoby, potencjały i możliwości jednostki – w oglądzie procesu samorealizacyjnego – promuje rozwojową wizję człowieka – jako osoby aktywnej, twórczo przekształcającej zarówno swoje otoczenie, jak i samą siebie. Motywacja człowieka do wprowadzania kreatywnych zmian i dążenia do osiągnięć jest związana z ludzką transgresyjnością. Natura samorealizacji w ujęciu Abrahama Maslowa jest zbliżona do natury transgresji w koncepcji Józefa Kozieleckiego. Zakłada ona, że człowiek jest aktywnym sprawcą, a jego zachowanie stanowi działalność intencjonalną, autonomiczną, zorientowaną na cel i dążącą do wychodzenia poza możliwości. Przedstawiona w opracowaniu propozycja ujmowania samorealizacji ma służyć do optymalizacji rozwoju człowieka, ale też pozwalać na poszerzanie granic Ja: przez proces samorealizacji – do działań transgresyjnych, w kierunku twórczych kompetencji.

The Meaning of Life in the Awareness of Polish Youth: A Socio-Pedagogical Analysis

The attitudes of both the youth and adults towards life as a whole and towards different manifestations and dimensions of human existence, are all important subjects of psychological and sociological research. What it concerns is a subjective image of one’s own life that is formed in consciousness of the studied groups’ representatives stemming from the sum of their life experiences: positive and negative, internal and external, subjective and objective. The article presents the results of sociological research on the meaning of life in the awareness of Polish youth. The following three issues are discussed: the frequency of reflecting upon the meaning of life, the one’s sense of life’s meaning and life satisfaction, as well as the sense of life’s meaningless. In the light of empirical data, the generalised existential awareness of young Poles could be described as quite ambivalent, as if on the fence between life’s meaningfulness and meaninglessness. Only about a half of Polish youth declares that life indeed has a meaning to them and provides them with a sense of satisfaction.
Postawy młodzieży i ludzi dorosłych wobec życia jako całości, a także wobec egzystencji ludzkiej w jej różnych przejawach i wymiarach stanowią ważny przedmiot badań psychologicznych i socjologicznych. Chodzi tu o subiektywny obraz własnego życia w świadomości badanych będący sumą doświadczeń życiowych: pozytywnych i negatywnych, wewnętrznych i zewnętrznych, subiektywnych i obiektywnych. W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań socjologicznych nad sensem życia w świadomości młodzieży polskiej. Omówiono trzy zagadnienia: częstotliwość myślenia o sensie życia, poczucie sensu i zadowolenie z życia oraz poczucie bezsensu życia. W świetle danych empirycznych można by określić świadomość egzystencjalną młodych Polaków jako dość ambiwalentną, wahającą się między sensem i bezsensem życia. Tylko mniej więcej połowa młodzieży polskiej deklaruje, że życie ma sens i daje jej zadowolenie.

Boredom Experienced by Students with Chronic Diseases and Preventative Measures
Doświadczanie nudy i możliwości jej zapobiegania u uczniów z chorobą przewlekłą

In her article, Krystyna Moczia addresses the condition of boredom experienced by students who suffer from chronic diseases. The aim of her research has been to identify the symptoms of boredom experienced by children and adolescents during long-term hospitalization and to examine the ways to help these patients to deal with the unpleasant emotions caused by boredom. Moczia asks the following research questions: How does boredom manifest itself in chronic patients? What are the ways to prevent boredom? Her approach is empirical and she has used the method of a diagnostic survey assisted by the projection technique (open-ended questions addressed to patients) and interviews (with teachers at the hospital school). Her objective has been to come up with a manual containing suggestions for students/patients: “A Phenomenal Antidote to Boredom, or Suggestions for Children Suffering from Chronic Diseases and Boredom”. This manual has been based in a brainstorming session carried out with students of educational sciences.
W artykule ukazano nudę jako stan doświadczany przez uczniów chorujących przewlekle. Celem badań było ustalenie objawów nudy pojawiającej się u dzieci i młodzieży w trakcie długotrwałej hospitalizacji oraz ukazanie sposobów pozwalających pacjentom na wyjście poza nieprzyjemne emocje wynikające ze znudzenia. Postawiono pytania badawcze: Czym objawia się nuda u osób chorujących przewlekle? Jakie są sposoby zapobiegania nudzie? Praca ma charakter empiryczny. Zastosowano metodę sondażu diagnostycznego z wykorzystaniem techniki projekcyjnej Zdania niedokończone (dla pacjentów) oraz techniki wywiadu (dla nauczycieli szkoły szpitalnej). Puentą artykułu jest przedstawienie sugestii dla uczniów/pacjentów: Fenomenalne antidotum na nudę, czyli co zaproponować nudzącym się chorym dzieciom. Pomysły są efektem przeprowadzonej wśród studentów pedagogiki burzy mózgów.

Unlike the traditional person-centred models where character traits are attached to the actions, the Actiotope Model of Giftedness (AMG) focuses on the person-environment interactions. The model asserts that successful learning requires essential sources including learning and educational capital situated in the environment. This study aims to validate the Persian version of the Questionnaire of Educational and Learning Capital (QELC) among students in Iran (n = 283). The Persian QELC was prepared and utilised to evaluate the sources revealed in the AMG. Results show that the Persian QELC has satisfactory psychometric properties.

Students’ Preferences Towards Fostering Their Learning Autonomy by Teachers

Wspomaganie samodzielności wychowanków w nabywaniu wiedzy i umiejętności jest jednym z celów edukacji. Osiąganie tego celu staje się obecnie coraz istotniejsze ze względu na ilość dostępnych informacji. Dodatkowo pandemia COVID-19 przyspieszyła powszechne wykorzystanie edukacji zdalnej, które często wymaga od uczących się większej samodzielności w podejmowaniu decyzji dotyczących nabywania wiedzy i umiejętności niż zajęcia, podczas których nauczyciel jest osobiście obecny. Badania wskazują, że osoby różnią się pod względem preferencji wobec sytuacji, które wymagają od nich samodzielnego podejmowania decyzji. Niewiele jest też narzędzi badawczych pozwalających dokonać pomiaru preferencji uczących się wobec zachowań nauczyciela zwiększających autonomię uczenia się uczestników zajęć. Z tego względu za cel badań własnych przyjęto poznanie preferencji studentów wobec wspierania rozwoju ich autonomii uczenia się przez nauczyciela. Na potrzeby badań opracowano Inwentarz Wspierania Samodzielności. Dane zebrano w roku 2019 oraz 2021, odpowiednio w grupach 137 oraz 87 studentów. Uzyskane rezultaty pokazały, że spośród analizowanych zachowań nauczyciela wspierających autonomię uczących się najbardziej preferowanymi przez respondentów były: słuchanie uczestników zajęć oraz dawanie im możliwości wyrażania opinii. Dane zebrane w roku 2021 w porównaniu z danymi z roku 2019 pokazały istotny wzrost preferencji badanych wobec komunikatów nauczyciela motywujących ich do pracy oraz wyrażających zrozumienie dla doświadczanych przez nich trudności. Z uzyskanych rezultatów badań wyciągnięto wnioski praktyczne.
Assisting students in the process of becoming independent learners is regarded as one of the goals of education. Achieving this goal has currently become more urgent because of the increasing amount of available information. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has made common the usage of remote education, which often demands more independent decisions concerning the acquisition of skills and knowledge on the part of the learner than in the classes where the teacher is in person available for students. Research shows that people differ in their preferences for situations which demand making independent decisions from them. Also, there are also a few instruments which allow to measure learners’ preferences for the teacher’s activities aimed at increasing the learning autonomy of class participants. For this reason, the aim of this study has been to investigate students’ preferences as regards the fostering of their learning autonomy by teachers. Fostering Learner Independence Inventory was constructed for the purpose of the research. Data was gathered in 2019 and 2020 among 137 and 87 university students respectively. The results have shown that out of the analyzed teachers’ activities aimed at fostering learners’ autonomy the ones most preferred by the students who participated in the research were listening to class participants and providing them with the opportunity to express their opinions. The results from the two research groups show a significant increase in the data gathered in 2021 in comparison to the data from 2019 in the respondents’ preferences for the teacher’s messages expressing their understanding of students’ experiences of difficulties in learning and motivating them to study. Practical conclusions from the research results have been drawn.

Kryzys ekologiczny jako edukacyjne wyzwanie poznawcze
Ecological Crisis as a Cognitive Challenge in Education

W artykule omówione zostały bariery i problemy poznawcze wpływające na edukację proekologiczną. Kwestia kryzysu ekologicznego jest niezwykle trudna do zrozumienia dla każdego człowieka, między innymi ze względu na błędy i pułapki myślowe, a także z powodu złożoności tej problematyki. W edukacji rodzi to problemy z przekazywaniem wiedzy dotyczącej ekologii, jej przyswojeniem, weryfikacją i operacjonalizacją. Edukacja proekologiczna wymaga zatem innego rodzaju działań niż te podejmowane w pozostałych obszarach kształcenia, wymaga integracji nie tylko międzyprzedmiotowej, lecz także związanej z nauką krytycznego myślenia oraz kształtowaniem wrażliwości moralnej i obywatelskiej.
In his article, Maciej Michalski discusses cognitive barriers and other challenges that have strong impact on proecological education. People find it difficult to understand the issue of the ecological crisis because of the common cognitive fallacies and logical errors as well as the complexity of this crisis. For these reasons, proecological education is finding it difficult to transmit and acquire knowledge as well as to ensure its verification and operationalization. As a result, proecological education requires new educational practices, different to those which are used in other areas of education. In particular, it requires an integration of different school courses and the development of the skill of critical thinking, moral sensitivity, and civic responsibility.

The Psychomotor Development of Children Attending Forest Kindergartens in Poland
Rozwój psychoruchowy dzieci uczęszczających do leśnych przedszkoli w Polsce

The article focuses on the topic of psychomotor development of children attending forest kindergartens. Other authors’ research findings, showing the influence of nature on the functioning of children, were presented as a background and a reference point to the results of my own research. The research carried out in the Czech Republic and Germany, whose results indicate the development of children from local forest kindergartens, are presented in greater detail. The central part of the article is the presentation of the resultsof own research concerning the psychomotor development of children attending forest kindergartens in Poland. The research demonstrates that children who attend the said forest kindergartens vary in terms of their psychomotor development, however, in most cases their development does not deviate from the indicative norm. Therefore, forest kindergartens create conditions for children’s proper psychomotor development.
Artykuł koncentruje się wokół tematu rozwoju psychoruchowego dzieci uczęszczających do leśnych przedszkoli. Jako tło i punkt odniesienia do wyników badań własnych zostały zaprezentowane wyniki badań innych autorów, ukazujące wpływ przyrody na funkcjonowanie dzieci. Szerzej przedstawiono wyniki badań przeprowadzonych w Czechach i Niemczech, ukazujących rozwój dzieci z tamtejszych leśnych przedszkoli. Centralną część tekstu stanowi prezentacja wyników badań własnych, dotyczących rozwoju psychoruchowego dzieci uczęszczających do leśnych przedszkoli w Polsce. Z badań wynika, że dzieci uczęszczające do leśnych przedszkoli w Polsce, które zostały objęte badaniem, są zróżnicowane pod względem rozwoju psychoruchowego, jednak w większości przypadków ich rozwój nie odbiega od orientacyjnej normy. Leśne przedszkola stwarzają warunki do prawidłowego rozwoju psychoruchowego dzieci.

Ewa Lach’s Na latającym dywanie [On the Flying Carpet] is a novel based on the theme of time travel. The book has a lasting value due to its entertainment and educational values. Regional themes and the regional setting. i.e., the Beskid-Silesian and Upper Silesian scenery, play an important role in it. Rather than historical knowledge, Ewa Lach popularizes literary and film conventions: western, the tales from One Thousand and One Nights, the historical-sensational novel, and fantasy (including science fiction). In this way, the book popularizes reading among its audience and encourages participation in mass culture. The book is still finding interested readers.
Powieść Ewy Lach Na latającym dywanie to utwór, którego fabuła oparta jest na motywie podróży w czasie. Książka ma trwałą wartość z uwagi na walory rozrywkowe, edukacyjne i kształcąco-wychowawcze. Dużą rolę odgrywa w niej tematyka i sceneria regionalna – beskidzko-śląska oraz górnośląska. Autorka w większym stopniu niż wiedzę historyczną popularyzuje konwencje literackie i filmowe – western, Baśnie tysiąca i jednej nocy, powieść historyczno-sensacyjną, a także fantastykę, w tym fantastykę naukową. Promuje w ten sposób wśród odbiorców czytelnictwo oraz uczestnictwo w kulturze masowej. Książka dotąd miewa czytelników.

Teaching music and visual arts to children can be seen as the key to their development. In his article, Jakub Adamczewski discusses the current shape of the organization of the teaching and planning processes of these two subjects in the context of the Polish primary school. Adamczewski’s main aim is to present new ideas and good practices, as based on his teaching experience, in the hope that they can be used to improve art education. This kind of knowledge, deriving from both a review of the literature on this subject and pedagogical experience, may be of value for teachers and academics involved in the education of art teachers at the primary-school level.
W XXI wieku nauczanie muzyki i plastyki może być postrzegane jako klucz do rozwoju artystycznego dzieci. W artykule poruszono kwestię organizacji procesu nauczania przedmiotów muzyka i plastyka oraz planowania działalności dydaktycznej w szkole podstawowej. Głównym celem jest zaprezentowanie autorskich pomysłów i dobrych praktyk dydaktycznych, które pozwolą urozmaicić edukację artystyczną. Tego rodzaju wiedza, wynikająca zarówno z przeglądu literatury, jak i z doświadczeń pedagogicznych autora, może być cenna dla nauczycieli i badaczy zajmujących się nauczaniem i edukacją nauczycieli przedmiotów artystycznych na poziomie szkoły podstawowej.

New Bioethical Problems in the Social Narrative

Nowe problemy bioetyczne, jakie pojawiły się w ostatnich kilku dekadach, można rozważać z wielu punktów widzenia: medycznego, psychologicznego, socjologicznego, filozoficznego (etycznego) i teologicznego. W naszych rozważaniach podejmujemy w narracji społecznej takie zagadnienia, jak: zapłodnienie pozaustrojowe in vitro, klonowanie ludzi, zmiana płci i eutanazja. Pytamy o to, jak młodzi Polacy oceniają te nowe sytuacje według kryteriów „dopuszczalne – niedopuszczalne”, „moralne – niemoralne”, „godziwe – niegodziwe”. Podstawą tych diagnoz są wyniki badań socjologicznych i rezultaty ogólnokrajowych sondaży opinii publicznej. Nowe problemy bioetyczne nie mają jeszcze bogatego opracowania socjologicznego.
The new bioethical problems that have emerged in the last few decades can be considered from several perspectives: medical, psychological, sociological, philosophical (ethical) and theological. The article addresses the attitudes towards issues such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF), human cloning, gender reassignment and euthanasia in the social narrative. It asks how young Poles evaluate these new situations according to the criteria ‘acceptable’ – ‘unacceptable’, ‘moral’ –‘immoral‘, ‘decent ‘ – ‘wicked‘. The diagnoses are based on the results of sociological studies and nationwide opinion polls.

Artykuł ma charakter przeglądowy i jego celem jest poprzez zrekonstruowanie portretu seryjnego zabójcy wskazanie głównych czynników, które powodują, że dziecko w życiu dorosłym przekształca się w psychopatycznego mordercę. Nie wszystko zostało zbadane i udowodnione odnośnie czynnika, który powoduje, że niektórzy się nimi stają. Artykuł ten wskazuje na czynniki środowiskowe i wychowawcze, które zwiększają szansę na uruchomienie tego mechanizmu, które często doprowadzają do wybierania przez ludzi drogi zła i stawania poza społecznymi normami. Analiza wybranej w artykule literatury ukazała, że ani narodowość ani rasa nie są tutaj determinujące.
The aim of the article is to identify the main factors that may shape the development of the psychopathic killer personality. In order to unveil these factors, a “composite drawing” needed to have been created depicting the characteristics of serial killer. What has been indicated in particular are environmental and educational factors which, by triggering a certain mechanism, contribute to the probability of a given individual’s entering the path of evil and breaking social norms. Based on the analysis of selected subject literature, the article propounds a thesis that neither ethnicity nor race influence the development of the psychopathic killer personality features.

The article addresses the issue of the informal teacher culture that functions alongside the formal one in which the teacher is seen as a representative of the dominant culture. It discusses three main types of teacher resistance culture: the ruler, the super(wo)man, and the ignoramus. They show the ways in which teachers function at school that are different from the commonly accepted ones. These cultures have been distinguished on the basis of a literature analysis and author’s own research and do not constitute an exhaustive catalogue. However, being aware of them allows us to enrich pedagogical reflection on the issue of resistance in education.

In his article, Adrian Uljasz discusses media reception and the ideological and educational message of the adaptation of Janusz Korczak’s novel King Matt the First, the film King Matthew I (directed by Wanda Jakubowska, screenplay by Wanda Jakubowska and Igor Newerly) (1957). Uljasz addresses the means of artistic expression on which the authors based the educational message of this film. By media reception Uljasz understands the reception of Jakubowska and Newerly’s works in the media, from traditional printed works to the contemporary metamedium, the Internet. This research topic has gained in importance due to the anniversaries related to Korczak and Newerly. In 2022, eighty years had passed since the deaths of Korczak and his pupils and employees from the Jewish orphanage in Warsaw (1942). 1987 saw the death of Igor Newerly, educator and writer, co-author of the script for Jakubowska’s adaptation and Korczak’s close associate from the Warsaw orphanage. The film can be regarded in terms of transference of the views of these two writers-educators.

Collaborative Inquiry for Knowledge Building among Children in Clinical Courses at the Master’s Level at an American College in New York State: A Descriptive Case Study

In this article, I describe how I teach graduate students who are in-service teachers in our master’s literacy program on how to facilitate inquiry-based learning among school children. This type of learning concentrates on students’ curiosity, asking questions, and investigating problems in collaboration. The teacher in such learning is more of a facilitator working towards helping children in becoming more independent learners. In my role as a teacher educator and coach I have used several resources to develop my own practice of teaching inquiry learning since 2015. I describe how I structure my graduate students’ tutoring for inquiry and how I teach the ways of utilizing literacy teaching strategies and routines, such as shared reading and accountable talk, in order to facilitate children’s knowledge building and their increasing independence in collaborative work. I also describe how my research interests that concentrate around investigating innovative inquiry-based learning spaces has informed this teaching.

This review article discusses selected issues taken up by Krzysztof Maliszewski in his work Bez-silna edukacja. O kształceniu kruchego [Power-less Education. On the Education of the Fragile.] The interesting content, the choice of the form of argument and its contexts, as well as the clear layout of the book have been subordinated to the tasks perfectly fulfilled by its author in presenting the assumptions, justification and discussion of the concept of power-less education.

Religiosity of High School Youth in the Process of Change (2015–2022) – Sociological Analysis

Dzisiaj ważne jest szukanie odpowiedzi nie tyle na pytanie, czy się zmienia – bo wiemy, że tak jest – ile na pytanie, jak się zmienia religijność młodzieży, jakie czynniki przyspieszają ten proces, które aspekty religijności podlegają przyspieszonej dekonstrukcji, jakie są mechanizmy tych przemian. W niniejszym studium socjologicznym religijność młodzieży szkolnej opisano na przykładzie wybranych parametrów religijności: autodeklaracje wyznaniowe, przynależność religijna, wiara i wierzenia religijne, praktyki religijne obowiązkowe. Postawiono hipotezę, że religijność w społeczeństwie postpandemicznym nie osiągnęła poziomu, jaki miała w okresie przed pandemią, zwłaszcza w dziedzinie praktyk religijnych. Religijność młodzieży szkolnej w naszym kraju przedstawiono w ramach analizy socjologicznej wyników badań socjologicznych i sondaży opinii publicznej zrealizowanych w latach 2015–2022.
Nowadays, it is important to seek answers not so much to the question of whether religiosity is changing – because we know that it is – but to the question of how the religiosity of young people is changing, what factors accelerate this process, which aspects of religiosity are subject to accelerated deconstruction, and what are the mechanisms of these transformations. In this sociological study, the religiosity of high school youth has been described based on the sample of selected parameters of religiosity, i.e., religious self-declarations, religious affiliation, religious belief and faith, and mandatory religious practices. We hypothesize that religiosity in the post-pandemic society has not reached the level it had in the pre-pandemic period, especially with regard to religious practices. The religiosity of the high school youth in Poland is presented on the basis of sociological analysis and the results of sociological studies, including public opinion polls carried out in 2015–2022.

In many scientific studies, the soldier is treated as a socially isolated person; the researchers’ interest is mainly focused on the psychophysical health of representatives of this social group. The article, based on a literature review, analyses the emotional, health and social costs incurred by other members of military families both during and after the soldier’s operations abroad. The article looks at the functioning of military families. Sources of difficult situations that may arise in soldiers’ families are listed, and parental attitudes characteristic of such families are discussed.

New Opportunities in Korczakian Documentary Research. Love and Friendship Among Pupils in the Orphans’ Home

The main aim of this article is to show an example of the new opportunities in Korczakian research. They have arisen due to the development of digital history and recently donated or hitherto unused archival resources. The article also adopts the perspective of deepening the knowledge of those aspects of the Korczak research field that is not directly related to Janusz Korczak, his biography and pedagogy. I consider it important to explore the topics and biographies of people around Korczak, not only Stefania Wilczyńska, but also children, educators or staff. The more complete the picture of Korczak’s universe, the better we will understand the multidirectional influences and connections between individuals and topics. My ambition was also to introduce non-Polish-speaking researchers to Korczak source materials that are rarely translated from Polish. My preliminary research, based on almost unknown sources from the archives of Lohamei Ha’Getaot in Israel (Ghetto Fighters’ House Archives), served as an example of how to take advantage of new opportunities. I adopted a microhistorical approach and analyzed personal documents, primarily letters of the pupils of the Orphans’ Home from 1938/1939–1941. The content of the sources made it possible to look at love and friendship relationships among the teenagers in the Orphans’ Home. I also discuss the topics of love and friendship in the pedagogical context of Janusz Korczak’s approach. Their intimate stories complement the knowledge of the history and functioning of the Orphans’ Home that we get from Korczak’s writings, Wilczyńska’s texts and other documents. In turn, the intrapersonal and interpersonal skills that can be captured in the sources I examined allow us to assume that also in the aspect of love and friendship relations, we can capture the positive impact of the Orphans’ Home on its pupils.
Głównym celem artykułu jest propozycja szerszego wykorzystywania w badaniach korczakowskich nowych możliwości, które pojawiły się w związku z rozwojem historii cyfrowej oraz niedawno przekazanymi lub niewykorzystywanymi dotąd zasobami archiwalnymi. W artykule przyjmuję również perspektywę pogłębiania znajomości tych aspektów korczakowskiego pola badawczego, które nie są bezpośrednio związane z Januszem Korczakiem, jego biografią i pedagogiką. Uważam za istotne eksplorowanie tematów i biografii osób znajdujących się w otoczeniu Korczaka, nie tylko Stefanii Wilczyńskiej, ale również dzieci, bursistów czy pracowników. Im pełniejszy będzie obraz korczakowskiego uniwersum, tym lepiej będziemy rozumieć wielokierunkowe wpływy i powiązania pomiędzy osobami i tematami. Moją ambicją było także przybliżenie badaczom i badaczkom niepolskojęzycznym rzadko tłumaczonych z polskiego korczakowskich materiałów źródłowych. Jako przykład wykorzystania nowych możliwości posłużyły moje wstępne badania, oparte na niemal nieznanych źródłach z zasobu archiwum Lohamei HaGeta'ot w Izraelu (Ghetto Fighters' House Archives). Przyjąłem podejście mikrohistoryczne i dokonałem analizy dokumentów osobistych, przede wszystkim listów wychowanek i wychowanków Domu Sierot z lat 1938/1939 – 1941. Zawartość źródeł pozwoliła przyjrzeć się relacjom miłosnym i przyjacielskim wśród nastoletnich podopiecznych Domu Sierot. Intymne historie, rozgrywające się w tym gronie, stanowią uzupełnienie wiedzy o historii i sposobie funkcjonowania Domu Sierot, którą czerpiemy z pism Korczaka, tekstów Wilczyńskiej oraz innego rodzaju dokumentów. Umiejętności intrapersonalne oraz interpersonalne, które można uchwycić w badanych przeze mnie źródłach, pozwalają zaś przypuszczać, że również w aspekcie relacji miłosnych i przyjacielskich możemy uchwycić pozytywny wpływ Domu Sierot na jego wychowanków i wychowanki.

Tekst stanowi zaproszenie do dyskusji o zasadności stosowania owej pary kategorialnej w studiach i badaniach z zakresu nauk humanistyczno-społecznych w XXI wieku.
The author attempts to develop Lech Witkowski’s intuition expressed in the title of his monograph Uroszczenia i transaktualność w humanistyce [Entitled and Transtopicality in Humanities] devoted to deciphering the heritage of Florian Znaniecki’s thought. He tries to explain the categories of claims and trans-actuality used by Witkowski in the title in various epistemological dimensions. The text is an invitation to discuss the validity of using this category pair in the studies and research in the field of humanities and social sciences in the twenty-first century.

Witkowski suggests searching for “between” connections in analysis, thus expressing the trans-topicality of Znaniecki’s work. Marynowicz-Hetka is interested in searching for temporal and spatial bridges, for ways of connecting space and historical time with our present moment. Her analysis in this article focuses on transversally outlined concepts and approaches to practical activity, as clearly expressed in the reception of Florian Znaniecki’s work. Their frameworks and analogies can be found in recent conceptions of order and disorder, important for the socio-pedagogical horizon of thinking. This insight, formulated in Lech Witkowski’s book, constitutes the central premise of this article, its considerations inspired by the insights that the category of chaos present in Znaniecki’s work requires an intense focus on the content and manner of speaking about the following triad: order – disorder/chaos – re-ordering/new order. This insight also justifies a revisiting of the issue of the scope of transformations and institutional movements essential to the understanding of practical activity.

Duchowość w ujęciu Janusza Korczaka i Viktora Frankla. Płaszczyzny spotkania
Spirituality in the Perspective of Janusz Korczak and Viktor Frankl: Planes of Encounter

Modlitwa zdaje się pełnić wiele funkcji w życiu człowieka. W niniejszej pracy chciałabym przedstawić ją jako werbalny przejaw duchowości, jako narzędzie opracowywania doświadczenia, oblekania go w sens i wreszcie jako immanentny wyraz człowieczeństwa. Chciałabym potraktować tę pracę jako miejsce twórczego spotkania dwóch idei — Janusza Korczaka i Viktora E. Frankla. To nieśmiała próba spojrzenia na jednego oczami drugiego. W pracy przyjęłam za cel poznanie psychicznych reprezentacji Boga podmiotów wypowiadających się w utworze Korczaka, by na tej podstawie móc spróbować określić funkcje, jakie pełni dla nich modlitwa. Na końcu chciałabym przyjrzeć się pojęciu człowieczeństwa i roli, jaką odgrywa w jego konstytuowaniu szeroko pojęta duchowość.
Prayer seems to have various functions in human life. In this paper, it has been presented as a verbal manifestation of spirituality, as a tool for elaborating experience, for giving it meaning and finally as an immanent expression of humanity. I consider this work as a place of creative meeting of two ideas, whose authors are Janusz Korczak and Viktor E. Frankl. It is a timid attempt to look at one author through the eyes of the other. The aim of this article is to explore the mental representations of God as created in the minds of the subjects who speak in Korczak’s work Sam na sam z Bogiem and, on this basis, to attempt to determine the function that prayer plays for them. It also looks at the notion of humanity and the role that spirituality, broadly defined, plays in its constitution.

Ideological and Educational Aspects of Building Ukrainian Independence in the 19th Century

The article focuses on the ideological and educational aspects of selected Ukrainian-centric thinkers and activists. Without the ideological and educational activities of this small group of the emerging Ukrainian intelligentsia, the million ethnic Ukrainian masses would have been absorbed into the Polish or Russian nationality project. The text presents the basic ideological principles that are the basis for shaping national consciousness and describes adverse historical conditions causing difficulties in shaping the Ukrainian idea of independence. The implementation of Ukrainian-centric ideas is shown on the example of selected organizations and representatives of Ukrainian culture, such as The Brotherhood of Saints Cyril and Methodius, Hromada, Stara Hromada, Panteleimon Kulish, Mykola Kostomarov, Volodymyr Antonovych, Mykhailo Drahomanov. The aim of the article is to present the importance of education in the process of formation of national consciousness.
