Dyskurs historii
The Discourse of History
Barthes, Roland
The article focuses on linguistic features of historical discourse to interrogate the degree of difference between historiography and imaginary narration: is it valid to regard historiography as secured by its privileged signifying relationship with reality it purports to be representing? In the section devoted to the act of utterance Barthes uses the concept of shifters introduced by Roman Jacobson in order to identify those features of historical discourse that organize it, address the reader or announce the presence, or absence, of the writing subject – the historiographer. In the section devoted to the issues of utterance, in turn, he underlines those discursive processes which serve to break down historical content into units and then discusses their role in the establishment of the linguistic and cultural status of historiography. In consequence, Barthes sees historical discourse as narration generating realistic effect in its signifying process.

The Writing of History
Pismo historii
de Certeau, Michel
The article discusses the role of history in the Western culture and delineates the conditions of possibility for its discursive effects. De Certeau sees history as a discourse constituted by a radical gesture of separating the present from the past and of generating its Other(s) for representation or silent ignorance. This gesture can only be possible in alliance with its contemporary sovereign political power whose role is to validate history and to designate its place in society. In return history serves the state and aims to represent and justify it. Such a relationship between history and power determines the processes of historiography, which De Certeau understands in terms of work and production. In this respect the discourse of history reveals two complimentary yet opposing senses of reality in its scientific methodology: on the one hand, reality is the effect of history, on the other, it constitutes the very premise of history. Nonetheless, in order to pass for the discourse of reality, history needs to function in culture like myth , that is like self-reflexive praxis sustaining social identity in opposition to its Other(s).

Gothic Interiors: Questions of Design and Perspective
Gotyckie wnętrza: zagadnienia stylu i perspektywy
Punter, David
David PunterGothic Interiors: Questions of Design and PerspectiveThe article offers a reflection on Gothic fiction in the context of enigmatic interiors of inhabitable spaces and literary dreams. Analyses of selected texts by Charles Dickens, H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Alan Poe, Algernon Blackwood, M.R. James, Mervyn Peake, Stephen King and Poppy Z. Brite, who may be regarded as representatives of the genre, offers the reader an insightful overview of a whole range of approaches towards the issues of perspective and spatial-temporal relations. It also inquires into the arcanes of Freudian and Jungian psychoanalysis and examines particular insights into the mysterious depths of the human psyche the fathers of the depth psychology have sounded. These ponderings, in turn, aim at exposing the fear, which one’s isolation from external reality and withdrawal into the complex interiors of one’s own mind may activate.

Sound Objects and Sound Products: Standardising a New Culture of Listening in the First Half of the Twentieth Century
Przedmioty dźwiękowe i produkty dźwiękowe: standardy nowej kultury słuchania w pierwszej połowie XX wieku
Hui, Alexandra
Tłumaczenie tekstu Aleksandry Hui autorstwa Justyny Stasiowskiej.
Translated by Justyna Stasiowska, Alexandra Hui's text analyses the emergence of sound objects with regard to the changes that musical culture of the 19th and 20th centuries have undergone and the impact that the invention of a phonograph has had on it. She introduces a new concept of reception, "threshold listening"; it is neither active nor passive act of listening, but rather it marks a psychological and physical response to the stimuli which does not necessarily entail their conscious reception.

Liberatura, literatura i książka artystyczna: kontekst, treść i istotne znaczenie materiału
Liberature, Literature and the Artist’s Book: Context, Content and Material Meaning
Bodman, Sarah
Revolving around the concept of the so-called artist’s book, the article compares liberary works with the artist’s books created by several authors. Sarah Bodman analyses the artistic creations of three main book-artists: the American authors Sally Alatalo and John McDowall, and Elisabeth Tonnard from the Netherlands. The main similarity between liberary works and the artist’s books is discovered in the physical side of the two, particularly in the meticulous designing and careful publishing of the work, which takes into consideration the size, material and appearance of the work envisaged by its author. Bodman indicates the distinction between liberature and the artist’s books in the different main foci of the two. According to her, book-artists focus on the book as an object of artistic value where every other element, including the text, is subordinate to the book-format while liberary authors create works which are primarily literary and textual in their essence.

The New Humanities in Poland: A Few Subjective Observations, Conjectures, and Criticisms
Nowa humanistyka w Polsce: kilka bardzo subiektywnych obserwacji, koniektur, refutacji
Nycz, Ryszard
Schauffler, David
Nycz outlines the main trends of the New Humanities in the world - digital humanities, engaged humanities, cognitive humanities, posthumanism, art-based research, as well as the main debates and misunderstandings that have emerged over the last decade in the Polish context. An example of the evolution of ways of thinking and conducting research are the cultural-literary studies, CLS. This acronym stands for a variety of terms ranging from cultural literary theory to cultural-textual literacy.

Ergon w erze antropocenu i nowe pytanie o bogactwo
Ergon w erze antropocenu i nowe pytanie o bogactwo

"Ergon in the Anthropocene and the New Question of Wealth"
This article endeavours to rethink wealth and the meaning of work (understood not only as ponos, but also as ergon), in the context of the Anthropocene. It is argued that only through redefining work it is possible to safely overcome the limitations of this age. As the article proves, the Anthropocene is in fact the Entropocene: an age in which the biosphere is confronted with a sudden and mass increase of entropy in each dimension of life on Earth. In order to resolve this threat, the transformation of knowledge and skills is essential. These qualities are, arguably, capable of producing negentropy, that is, the way through which human beings produce artificial organs that enhance the world in its technological (and not biological) dimension. Therefore, negentropy is discussed as an adequate alternative to the economic models that fail to respond to the dynamics of the Anthropocene/Entropocene.

Zdaniem autora, antropocen to w istocie era entropocenu, czyli era, w której biosfera zostaje skonfrontowana z nagłym i masowym wzrostem entropii we wszystkich wymiarach życia na ziemi.

The New Humanities: In Search of Boundaries
The New Humanities: In Search of Boundaries
Bielik-Robson, Agata
Schauffler, David
"The New Humanities: In Search of Boundaries"
This article attempts to discuss the philosophical contexts and meaning of the new humanities in the context of the philosophy of subjectivity. At the foundation of the new humanities, as it is argued, is not enlightenment, but Heidegger’s thought, with his excoriating critique of modern subjectivity and its Machenschaft. The article points to the foundational hubris that the new humanities oppose, and to the attempt to reinstall the subject within fixed boundaries. The new humanities, and posthumanism in particular, might backlash with violence against civilisation, comparable to that they endeavour to renounce. In order to manoeuvre through these convoluted figures of subjectivity, the article supports its theses with insightful readings of Hölderlin and Adorno.
"Nowa humanistyka: w poszukiawniu granic"
