Teologia czy teologia feministyczna? Mary Daly, "Beyond God the Father"
Zając, Marta
Uniwersytet Śląski w Katowicach; Wydział Filologiczny; Instytut Kultur i Literatur Anglojęzycznych http://www.ikila.us.edu.pl/index.php/pracownicy/item/825-marta-zajac

The Loom of the Land
The essay endeavours to show that the problems encountered while attempting to determine the ontological status of The Manuscript Found in Saragossa (the original text does not exist; what is taken for it is a compilation of fragments in various languages) have a wider significance than merely a textological one. The way the fragments of the text reflect each other making the position of an interpreter very uncomfortable is reflected in the problems the main protagonist of the novel has with ascertaining the nature of reality he encounters in Sierra Morena, which is being constructed for him by means of multiple stories he is told during his journey and of which the novel mainly consists. Because these narrations cannot be classified as either cunning fictions or true renditions of reality, the status of the experience taking place becomes ever more problematic. Taking into account the structural impossibility of the all-encompassing perspective inscribed the novel, the essay tries to show that the status of the reality and the narratives presented in the text is very different from what is finally presented to the protagonist as the true interpretation of the events. Relying on “truths” whose origin is the discourse of the King and the Church, the interpretation attempts to “explain” the space which extends beyond such authority using categories which are not applicable to it. This space is also the space of narration as literary practice.

Mięso przekazu czy skorupa ciała: dylematy odbiorcy współczesnej kultury audiowizualnej
Paluch, Marta
Marta Paluch
The Flesh of the Message or the Bodily Shell:
Dilemmas of the Recipient of Contemporary Audiovisual Culture
The point of departure for the present article is a debate around the image of Izabelle Caro, which has proven to be received as shocking not because it transgresses the taboo of nudity, but because it violates the taboo of the ideal body. The model’s body has been presented to the broad audience in its “raw,” unbeautified state, thus forcing the viewers to acknowledge the existence of an ill body, a body remote from the preferred ideal, and―most importantly―a body which has become ill as a result of the strife to live up to the ubiquitous template of perfection. In the case discussed by the author of the article, the result which such a struggle yields stands in direct opposition to its goals. Pretending to be natural, the fully digitized―or, in fact, digitally generated―body of the model is painfully confronted with what apparently is the same body, yet a body entirely natural, although degraded and exhausted by the destructive power of the former. The viewer facing the image, in which the body is central and its background reduced to a blur beyond signification, confronts the exposed and emphasized discrepancy: its immediacy does not allow him or her to remain indifferent. However, the lack of background results in the model’s suspension in vacuum: her body fails to harmonize with its surrounding, as is the case with bodies functioning as empty or void indices. It is for this reason that an average “consumer of the image,” lacking proper interpretive tools, is likely to fail to tame such an image or to acknowledge its authenticity. Rather than that, he or she may be inclined to reduce the final outcome of the photographer’s work to computer manipulation.

Miłość i nienawiść (głównie jednak nienawiść) w Nowym Świecie. Wizja kolonizacji angielskiej w Ameryce Północnej w filmie Terence'a Malicka

Love and Hate (But Mostly Hate) in the New World.
Vision of English Colonization in North America
in Terence Malick’s Film.
Terence Malick’s The New World retells the story of Pocahontas and John Smith and the founding of Jamestown, Virginia, the latter considered to initiate the period of British colonization of North America. Of the historical Pocahontas, the daughter of Wahunsunacawh (more famous as Powhatan), the chief of the Virginia tribes, we really do not know too much, but the popular image of the “Indian princess” and lover of the soldier-colonist has become all too well known. Malick is not trying to be very original in his version of the Pocahontas myth—it seems that retelling her story is merely a pretext to portray an imagined, almost ideal native community and contrast it with the chaotic and violent world of white settlers. Paradoxically, in this audibly and visually enchanting narration some basic truth about the founding days of the American nation is convincingly transmitted: that the root of the nation’s foundation is to be seen not in the alleged love of two individuals coming from two different cultures, but in the growing misunderstanding, distrust and hatred between the two races.

Facing The Image.
On Theatricality of Space in Michael Haneke’s Hidden
Michael Haneke’s Hidden (2005) became his most discussed film so far. This article summarizes the film’s reception, placing it in the context of theatrical space with its ability to position and immobilize the viewer. Drawing on the theatrical theories of Hans Thies-Lehmann and Maaikee Bleeker, as well as on Richard Schechner’s performance theory and the polemical discussion of the liveness category offered by Philip Auslander, the author argues that Hidden is a film that goes on live, unfolding in the presence of the spectator as it is emphasized by the viewer’s immobilization, which in turn resembles the situation of being in a theatre.

The Decline of Experience? Pastoral Fears of (Neo)Pragmatism
The article aims at describing and analyzing some of the contemporary dilemmas of American neopragmatist philosophy. It would appear that Richard Rorty’s conclusions concerning the conceptual framework of world-description as rooted solely in the multiplicity of contingent paradigms of vocabularies forces into the background an important aspect of the preceding pragmatist tradition: the sensory experience. Using the example of two prominent landscape artists, Nancy Holt and Ana Mendieta, as the point of departure, the article illustrates the attempts of the neopragmatist thought to revive those elements of John Dewey’s aesthetic philosophy that bear direct relevance to contemporary ecocriticism. In this context, John Shusterman’s writings may parallel the pastoral element of eco-philosophy, providing a refreshing perspective on concepts of the environment and the non-human.

The Ironist’s Fear.
The Human Self in Richard Rorty’s Literary Culture.
Build on the anti-essentialist foundations that were raised by Nietzsche and Derrida, Richard Rorty’s post-metaphysical vision of literary culture entails two crucial concepts: irony and solidarity. The present article intends to highlight the presence of a third, less perceptible key idea: fear. The ironist’s description(s) of the world, involve(s) ever-changing vocabularies, adaptable according to the demands of new situations and emerging different forms of otherness, vocabularies which are shaped and reshaped by encounters with the ever-extending line of literary works, with the awareness of the inability to find or settle for the “final vocabulary.” It is precisely this awareness, which may, under certain circumstances, be seen as evoking a possibility of fear that concerns not only the stability of one’s identity, but also the inability of a complete and satisfactory expression. This fear, however, does not necessarily has to have a stunting effect – it may be responsible for the stimulation of one of man’s most powerful qualities: creativity.

Cultural Studies on Copyright Law
The goal of the article is to present and analyze the key problems of cultural studies on copyright law – a relatively new area of literary and cultural research, developed mostly in the United States since 1980s. The main objective of thus oriented research is to introduce an alternative perspective to studies traditionally carried out by copyright lawyers – a perspective allowing one to recognize the complexity of ways in which legal solutions may impact cultural practice. The article chronologically discusses the most important publications representing this subdiscipline, including text by such authors as Martha Woodmansee, Mark Rose, Paul K. Saint-Amour and Caren Irr. The critical presentation of the material focuses on ways of defining relations between copyright law and literature, on the impact of analyses carried out within this model upon our understanding of the cultural phenomena under discussion, and – last but not least – on research methods within the area. Additionally, the argument presented in the article serves the purpose of deriving a more general formula of thinking about literature from the existing research and of confronting it with other modes of reflection about the relations obtaining between various disciplines of academic research.

Kulturowe studia nad prawem autorskim
Marthy Woodmansee, Marka Rose’a, Paula K. Saint-Amoura i Caren Irr.

Homo hierarchicus w nowoczesnej utopii
(na przykładzie Roku potopu Margaret Atwood
i Atlasu chmur Davida Mitchella)

Homo Hierarchicus in Modern Utopia
(on the Basis of The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood and The Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell)
Abstract: The paper explores the hierarchical model of society as shown in the dystopian novel The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood and in one of the narratives of Cloud Atlas – Orison of Sonmi 451 by David Mitchell. The chief aim of the paper is to identify both similarities and differences manifested in the construction of the social world. A special emphasis has been placed on the role of a hierarchical order present in these narratives which has a direct impact on the structure of communities operating within the social world. In the analysis the author refers to the theory of a French sociologist and anthropologist Louis Dumont, who sees hierarchy as a fundamental principle organizing social life typical of traditional societies and perceived as an anomaly and deviation in Western culture, and to the model of social structure as shown by Jacek Szmatka, who sees it as an indispensable tool in grasping and understanding processes taking place within the community.

Wśród przeczytanych łąk, asonansów... O literaturze totalnej trochę innym głosem
Fajfer, Zenon
https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zenon_Fajfer
Totalne, ucieleśnione dzieło, w całości zaplanowane, a jednak zdolne "mówić" do czytelnika: ku temu właśnie kieruje się Fajfer w swoim artykule.

Buckminster Fuller and His Work
From Technological Utopia to Sacred Technology
The article presents the work of American visionary Buckminster Fuller in the context of his project of technological utopia. Analyzing the assumptions underlying this project (the so-called Comprehensive Anticipatory Design Science), we note that Fuller's thought is a form of reference to the ancient category of logos. In his approach, the reconciliation of individual logos with common logos takes the form of humanity's adaptation to the "nature operating system", with technology being the tool for this adaptation. At the same time, referring to the interpretation of Fuller's ideas proposed by Scott Eastham, the author shows that Fuller's understanding of technology is related to the so-called sacred geometry. When approached from this perspective, technology and spirtuality can be seen as merging into a coherent whole.

Queerowanie matrycy: estetyka męskiego ciała w fotografii Erwina Olafa i Ruvena Afanadora
Grądz, Krystian
Uniwersytet Szczuciński
In the following paper, the author approaches some of the visual work of two contemporary photographers – Erwin Olaf and Ruven Afanador – in an attempt to see how their work renounces traditional views on masculinity. The photographs chosen for this analysis appear to be a peculiar play with social conventions and expectations related to gender and sexuality. In their work, both Erwin Olaf and Ruven Afanador seem to disrupt and reject the economy of heterosexual desire in favour of a much freer – and unconstrained by propriety – expression of corporeality and sensuality. As a result of such a spectacle of re-creation, the body is redefined not only as a means of expressing performativity (or, the surface onto which it is inscribed), but above all as a medium of becoming which functions as a reservoir of ever-changing meanings.
