Zarys psychologii ogólnej Paula Natorpa według Allgemeine Psychologie in Leitsätzen zu akademischen Vorlesungen
Musioł, Anna Agnieszka
W 1904 roku Paul G. Natorp (1854-1924) publikuje swoje wykłady z psychologii ogólnej. W artykule wykazuję, iż ta stricte filozoficzna, a zarazem systematyczna praca opisuje istotne w życiu intelektualnym Europy przełomu XIX i XX wieku, zagadnienia psychologizmu i psychologii, które niemiecki myśliciel ujmuje zgodnie z założeniami filozofii transcendentalnej.

Masaryk a nasze dzisiejsze pytania
Furman, Marcin Mariusz

Czardybon, Barbara
W artykule nakreślone zostaje zagadnienie wiedzy w rosyjskim neokantyzmie, rozumianym możliwie najszerzej. Syntetycznie przedstawione zostają poglądy odnośnie do tytułowej kwestii przynależne rosyjskim myślicielom uważanym za przedstawicieli tak zwanego akademickiego i nieakademickiego neokantyzmu. Autorka pracy przywołuje ponadto stanowisko „rosyjskiego marburczyka” Nicolaia Hartmanna, bliskie koncepcji Wasyla Sezemana.

Mruszczyk, Magdalena
Anna Teresa Tymieniecka (1923-2014), to współczesna polska filozof o międzynarodowej sławie związanej z działalnością ufundowanego przez nią w Stanach Zjednoczonych w roku 1976 Światowego Instytutu Fenomenologii. Jej celem były gruntowne studia nad klasyczną myślą fenomenologiczną i wyznaczenie własnej drogi myślenia fenomenologicznego.

The polemic between Leonard Nelson and Ernst Cassirer on the critical method in the philosophy
Kubalica, Tomasz
The subject of the paper is a polemic between Leonard Nelson and Ernst Cassirer mainly concerning the understanding of the critical method in philosophy. Nelson refutes the accusation of psychologism and attacks the core of the philosophy of the Marburg School of New-Kantianism. In response to those allegations, Cassirer feels obliged to defend the position of his masters and performs this task brilliantly. The present paper considers similarities and differences in the positions of both sides in this polemic. I try to evaluate the arguments of both sides. I argue that both sides took basically the same positions and existing discrepancies did not justify such an intense polemic. If the disputing sides had approached the discussions in a less emotional way, it could have led to substantive and interesting conclusions.

Philosophical and Mathematical Correspondence between Gottlob Frege and Bertrand Russell in the years 1902-1904. Some Uninvestigated Topics
Besler, Gabriela
Abstract Although the connections between Frege’s and Russell’s investigations are commonly known (Hylton 2010), however, there are some topics in the letters which do not seem to have been analysed until now:1. Paradoxes formulated by Russell on the basis of Frege’s rules: a) „»ξ can never take the place of a proper name« I false proposition when ξ is a proposition”; b) “A function never takes the place of a subject”. A solution of this problem was based on reference/sense theory and on distinction between the first- and second-level names (Frege).2. The inconsistency in Frege’s system may be avoided by introduction of: a) a new kind of objects called quasi-objects (Frege); b) logical types (Frege and Russell); c) mathematics without classes (Russell); d) some restrictions on domain of function (Frege).3. Since an inconsistency is connected with a class what is class? In one of the letters Frege compared a class to a chair which is composed of atoms. It seems to be similar to collective understanding of a set (Stanisław Leśniewski).4. Russell doubted that the difference between sense and reference of expressions is essential. Hence, Frege found some additional reasons to distinguish them: semiotic, epistemological, from identity, from mathematical practice. This discussion can be seen as a next step in developing the theory of description by Bertrand Russell.

Responsibility in Existential Approach of Psychotherapy
Gralak, Anita
The aim of this paper is to show that responsibility arises from an existential dimension of human being and, therefore an existential depth is a necessary condition of undertaking or rejecting responsibility. Linking ethical and existential dimensions has an application in a process of psychotherapy, beginning from M. Boss, to I.D. Yalom. Both of them applied the philosophical issues of M. Heidegger’s thought. Yalom isolated the area of problems and medical conditions, and put forward a thesis that they arise from the existential depth of Dasein, and thus assuming or escaping responsibility brings consequences for mental health. Following such indications one may find himself on a ground of his own responsibility. In this paper, it will be shown that if one deals with existential issues, one may answer to human problems during the process of psychotherapy, and might approximate himself to authenticity, which means prosperity, well-being and integration of personality. I hope that the following paper will be a contribution to polemics and a treatment among milieu of philosophers, but not only among psychotherapists.key words: existentialism, responsibility, psychotherapy, yalom, heidegger

The City-Place as a Work of Art. Introduction
Popczyk, Maria
In this paper I will attempt to look at the city-place as a work of art. Such an approach will allow us to take into consideration its aesthetic, sensual and reflective qualities and, at the same time, contemplate those aspects which go beyond the philosophy of art, such as practical needs of everyday life. I am analyzing the opinions expressed by Olsen, Christie Boyer and the architects, Le Corbusier and Kevin Lynch. The positive view of the place emphasizes the role played by its shape and layout, by the sense of security and beauty, by harmony, sensuality and emotions, by the sense of belonging and identity. The city, however, also means ruins, abandoned places invisible to its inhabitants. I am examining an approach adopted by Urban Explorer and I am underlining the aesthetic and artistic way of depicting the city. In the final part I am discussing the spatial-temporal dimensions/indicators of the city as a work of art.

Keywords: Erfahrung, Anschauung, Begriff, repräsentativer InhaltThe paper focuses on the problem of constitution of our cognitive experience. Twoapproaches to this problem proposed by Cassirer and McDowell are central for the analysis. Both authors use Kant’s theory of cognition as a foundation for their own conceptions undthey develop their independent interpretations of it according to the traditions they belong to.Although McDowell’s interpretation emerged within analytical philosophy, we can seesimilarity with Cassirer’s theory. The Source of Notions. Plato’s Conception of Language in the Perspective of His Ontology
Tomkowska-Olejarczyk, Anna
In the paper, I argue for an importance of holistic approach to Corpus Platonicum, and such lecture of it, which leads to the coherent model of Plato's ontology, and epistemology connected with his conception of language. The starting point of my draft of, as I assume, much-needed investigation, is the analysis of Cratylus and theory of truth depended on proper names. The next step is taking under consideration Plato's quotation from Hesiod, which steers into differentiation between two ways of substantiating statements given by Hesiod in his two didactic poems. The right name has not to be given by gods nor does it belong to the ancient order, even such old as the Golden Age. Instead, it has to belong to the natural order, which makes everything that exists to be as a whole. Hence, it could be created, it could be given a name by lawgivers or others, who understand these valid connections, for example, by honest sophist or true artisan of technē basilike – the philosopher. Accordingly, the proper name is the fruit of hard working; it takes a lot of investigation to find one. This conclusion leads to the analysis of Plato's methodology of proper investigation that connects dialectics with the geometrical approach: the method of exposing the proper measure. Plato's epistemology consists with several (possibly seven, as it is shown in Republic) levels of perceiving the world, and bi-polarity of One and Many is crucial for his ontology, hence there are few sources of nations. But, as I argue, phantasia gives only false and worthless notions, eikasia is the source of practical ones, and noesis solely creates the true, proper, and essential notion. The notion created by noesis is connected with every other notion, with other forms, and things in the proper measures.

„Sztuka przypadku”, analogicznie do „nauki o przypadku” postrzegane były jako contradictio in adiecto.

Neokantyzm a logika filozofii. Szkic problemu
Noras, Andrzej J.

Coincidence, Probability, Cognitive Error
Szymanek, Krzysztof
A lot has been written about coincidence, including research into the probabilistic, methodological, psychological and philosophical aspects of coincidence This paper presents some aspects of the role of coincidence in the human cognitive system, focusing in particular on probabilistic reasoning and logical and methodological errors in reasoning associated with the perception and interpretation of coincidence. Due to the nature of things, it is not possible to omit the areas of research mentioned above.

Sceptyczne tropy Wittgensteina i transcendentalizm

Patočka and English Sensualism and its Place in Modern Philosophy
Patočka and English Sensualism and its Place in Modern Philosophy
Hruška, Dušan
Reception of the British empirical-sensualistic tradition as a unique form of philosophizing has its irreplaceable place in the history of philosophy. Jan Patočka takes this fact into consideration, but his reception and interpretation of British empiricism is not purely historical. Patočka was trained by Husserl’s phenomenology and formed by Heidegger’s intellectual heritage, and this makes for his specific philosophical thinking. Furthermore, his thinking is highly influenced by a thematic element initially formed on the grounds of Husserl’s phenomenology as the problem of Lebenswelt, now present in Patočka’s work as the problem of natural world. Patočka perceives entire philosophical tradition via the context of this leitmotif, which we find present in his thinking. His critical reception of British empiricism was an inseparable component in the rethinking of the problem of natural world. Patočka did not offer any attempt at summarization of his attitude towards British sensualism in form of a stand-alone paper or study. Nevertheless, reception of British philosophical heritage of the 17th century in Patočka’s optics definitely is of primary importance – firstly, in context of phenomenological tradition (especially its founder E. Husserl), which Patočka joins, and secondly for the purpose of articulating his own philosophical position. Commentaries to British sensualistic tradition can be found in various writings from his early, as well as late period. His notion of empiricism is always fundamentally interrelated with his other philosophical works – within his interpretation of Husserl, Heidegger and later still more intensively within Patočka’s own notion of natural world and his project of asubjective phenomenology.

Patočka and Socratic knowing of the unknown
Stojka, Róbert
Socrates as a philosopher is present in Patočka’s thinking in irreplaceable manner, and in all periods of his philosophical life. Patočka mainly accepts the Socratic idea of knowing the unknown. He is developing this idea step by step throughout the various periods of his philosophical work. Socratic knowing of the unknown, transformed through the problematisation and the moment of negativity successively into the principle of historicity, means for Patočka the essential resort for his own conception of philosophy of history in its top form. Within this conception he is attempting for a new, historical understanding of the sense of human life, and also of the sense of history. For Patočka, the history is understood on the basis of constant problematisation, it’s infinite, unresolved and opened – but it must remain this way, if we don’t want to think about the end of history.

Patočka and Rorty – The Problem of Freedom
Mayerová, Katarína
Patočka´s and Rorty´s philosophy offer a foundation for the reconstruction of liberalism and a possibility of fulfilling individual´s freedom. Patočka intends to assess the value of transcendence and its relevance to life. He tries to save the metaphysics for it does not need to become necessarily dogmatic. Contemporary people may find Patočka´s reflections on freedom beneficial. Patočka invites people to connect their spirituality with skepticism and modesty, and according to Socratic knowing of unknowing, along with humility which makes man non-dogmatically open to transcendence. In the reflections on man, Rorty holds to moral responsibility and tries to bring man to self-awareness and taking responsibility for his acting, because it is only man who disposes of unique possibilities and abilities to shape his own authentic way of life. Rorty´s concept of freedom as an accidental phenomenon is based on the concept of history of Western philosophy and is closely linked with the problem of metaphysics and truth. Despite timeless reflections of both philosophers, any timeless ideal of human freedom is determined by the context in which we are thinking.

Patočka and Hegel´'s Philosophy of the History of Philosophy
Leško, Vladimír
Hegel’s history of philosophy has irreplaceable place within the whole of his philosophizing and this fact grounds its philosophical importance. It has become the organ of the self-knowing mind in time as an integral component of philosophy of objective mind. Patočka was very precise with defining four main dimensions of Hegel’s philosophy of the history of philosophy: 1. The development of philosophy is organic. Different philosophies are different stages of the same organism development. 2. The role of individuality is subordinate; it does not belong to philosophical contents. 3. Time is but a mere external milieu, a mirror of inner development in the organism of mind. Philosophy and other aspects of mind in different periods are certain manifestations of the very same stage in the development of spiritual substance. Each historical period can be expressed rationally. Time thus doesn´t have positive, content meaning. 4. Advance of philosophical systems corresponds with the logical development of thought. The crucial core of Hegel’s philosophy of the history of philosophy as Patočka identified it couldn´t be even put forward in a better way. According to Patočka, Hegel is right that history of philosophy lives a life of systematic philosophy; it reflects our systematic nature, our tendency to system. History of philosophy and philosophy itself for Patočka, as well as for Hegel, create unity – a kind of organic totality.

Patočka, Nietzsche and the issue of man
Jusko, Štefan
In framing a question about meaning of man, respectively human history, Patočka uses a historical-philosophical aspect as well as a phenomenological aspect. By tracking the genesis of the concept of eternity from Kant to the 20th century he concludes, that human meaning cannot be derived from moral postulates which exceed finitness of man. By deleting the concept of eternity Patočka concludes, that the question of meaning cannot be bound by human targets, because filled purpose is already objectified, existing, without the horizon of your being and in this its takes the form of a relative meaning. The meaning, according to Patočka is phenomenologically bound to being, which is non-objective, implying that the meaning is problematic, unreal, yet constantly perpetuated. This attitude has served Patočka to the criticism of nihilism and in it especially to the unacceptability of active nihilism, the concept which Nietzsche introduced into the philosophy. Patočka transferred a critique of Nietzsche´s understanding of realized meaning in terms of superman by rejection of his idea of will to power (he understood it in the definition of gross and ruthless animal life, namely in the form of the highest being) and the doubtful idea of eternal return. Patočka with his attitude to Nietzsche only echoed the opinion presented by Heidegger, which called Nietzsche the consummator of modern subjectivity. In terms of the present (Kouba) it shows, that phenomenology will profit more if it converts both Nietzsche´s thoughts to its own area and use them in the analysis of situational meaning that is constantly (by contradiction) bound to the horizon of possibility of the situation without a sense – that is in meaningful situation suppressed, not realized, but its validity and consistency with the horizon of meaning does not lose. In this view, it appears that Nietzsche´s understanding of the meaning is also problematic, but this problematic natureis not bound to absolute meaning.

Jan Patočka and Charta 77 as a Philosophical Problem
Bęben, Dariusz
Patočka’s philosophical work is very extensive; therefore, it is necessary to pay special attention to each area of his interest. It seems that the most important thing in his philosophical heritage is his effort to bridge political and philosophical thought. The aim of this article is to describe the influence of the philosophy of Jan Patočka on the Charter 77 programme. His role was revealed mainly in providing Charter 77 with the moral and existential context.

Adam Wiegner in the Light of Leonard Nelson’s Problem of Knowledge
Adam Wiegner wobec zagadnienia poznawczego w oświetleniu Leonarda Nelsona
Kubalica, Tomasz
The subject of the article is the influence of the broadly understood NeoKantianism on the assimilating of Kantians ideas of critical philosophy (critical method) in Poland. I would like to present a philosophical and historical reflection on the dissertation of professor of University of Poznan Adam Wiegner (1889—1967), entitled Zagadnienie poznawcze w oświetleniu L. Nelsona (Problem of Knowledge in the Light of L. Nelson, 1925), in which he undertook a critical analysis of Nelson’s problem of impossibility of the theory of knowledge and possibilities of the metaphysics. The main aim of the article is to present the Neo-Kantians (as well as the Neo-Friesians) context of the above-mentioned Wiegners dissertation and to reflect on the reception of Nelson’s thoughts in Poznań. I would like to show that, contrary to the schematic simplification, Neo-Kantian thought had a significant influence on the shape of philosophy in Poland.

Creativity and Dynamism contra Idealism Imagination in Anna Teresa Tymieniecka’s Concept of Phenomenology of Life
Twórczość i dynamizm contra idealizm. Wyobraźnia w fenomenologii życia Anny Teresy Tymienieckiej
Mruszczyk, Magdalena
Anna Teresa Tymieniecka’s (1923—2014) concept of phenomenology of life appears as a cosmological perspective of the development of phenomenology in general. Although Polish philosopher elaborated this conception in polemic with Edmund Husserl’s phenomenological view and in co-operation with the natural sciences, she tried to keep all the gains of classical phenomenology. Ultimately, she subjected the transcendental consciousness to verification, pointing its stability as a result of the intentionality of cognition, which Husserl considered as the constitutive function of the subject. By changing the perspective, Tymieniecka was striving to demonstrate that the subject — the living human being — gives the world the sense of meaning and knows it as originally inspired and motivated by his imagination. Therefore, thecreative imagination — Imaginatuio Creatrix — should be established as a dynamic source of the constitution of the human world.
Fenomenologia życia autorstwa Anny Teresy Tymienieckiej (1923–2014), to kosmologiczna perspektywa rozwoju fenomenologii. Zmieniając perspektywę, Tymieniecka dążyła do wykazania, że podmiot – żywy człowiek – obdarza świat sensem i poznaje go, pierwotnie inspirowany i motywowany wyobraźnią. Dlatego wyobraźnię twórczą – imaginatio creatrix – należy uczynić dynamicznym źródłem konstytucji ludzkiego świata.

Civilization issues of deliberations on a man in the conception of Erazm Majewski
Cywilizacyjne aspekty rozważań nad człowiekiem w teorii Erazma Majewskiego
Bukowska, Sonia
The subject of the article is the concept of a man formed by a Polish philosopher and sociologist Erazm Majewski (1858—1922). The appropriate topic of the deliberations is preceded by a short reflection concerning the area of anthropological inquiry in the beginning of the 20th century. The analysis of Erazm Majewski’s views raises the question of a research perspective established by the philosopher, and then the possibility to obtain an answer to the question of human nature on basis of the theory of civilization. A special attention was paid the premises, which as defined by Majewski, enabled a man to cross the borders of the animal world.

Stefan Folaron on the Ethos of the University Yesterday and Today
Stefan Folaron o etosie uniwersytetu wczoraj i dziś
Szotek, Barbara
For some time now in the modern world there is a debate on higher education, conditioned by various factors about the nature of globalization and the new challenges with the increasing role of the market. Various possible positions on the shape of the university, its scientific research, academic cooperation and academic education at the highest level are presented. They speak on the subject by representatives of the humanities, natural sciences and engineering. One of the representatives of the humanities, who shared his reflections on this subject, was Stefan Folaron, a scholar not yet known in modern Polish philosophy and science. Their views and comments on the twenty-first century vision of the university presented mainly inhis work: Etos profesora XVI wieku. Uniwersytet — człowiek (Professors Ethos of the Sixteenth Century. University — Man). He demanded the necessity of seeking a model of a university that would be adequate to changing reality but would remain faithful to its centuries-old mission.

Elements of Elitism in Polish Philosophical and Social Thought of the Beginning of XX Century
Wątki elitaryzmu w polskiej myśli filozoficzno – społecznej początku XX wiek
Szumera, Grażyna
This article shows the leading role of the elite in creating cultural heritage. Since the subject of reflection has been the society, carried out on the search for distinctive features of outstanding individuals. Many thinkers emphasized the culture-forming, nation-forming and political importance of the elites. Most often in the concepts of the elitist his influence on the direction of social development. The elitist tendencies culminated in the early twentieth century. Also in the works of Polish thinkers can be found threads of elitism.
W artykule ukazuję wiodącą rolę elit w tworzeniu dorobku kulturowego. Odkąd obiektem refleksji stało się społeczeństwo, prowadzono rozważania nad poszukiwaniem cech charakterystycznych jednostek wybitnych. Wielu myślicieli podkreślało znaczenie kulturotwórcze, narodotwórcze i polityczne elit. Najczęściej w koncepcjach elitarystycznych ukazywano wpływ elit na kierunek rozwoju społecznego. Tendencje elitarystyczne swą kulminacje osiągnęły na początku XX wieku. Również w twórczości polskich myślicieli można odnaleźć wątki elitaryzmu.

The spiritual character of Pole Attempt of a philosophical portrait
Duchowość Polaka. Próba portretu filozoficznego
Andrzejewski, Bolesław
The article deals with the history of Polish philosophy. Particular attention is given to its practical, at times even pragmatic overtone. The praxis dominates in the Middle Ages, modern philosophy and also in contemporary thought. After the appearance of Kantianism, there emerges in Poland a theoretical consciousness. These practical and theoretical dimensions lead to a synthesis that is referred as “Polish humanism”.
Praca dotyczy dziejów filozofii polskiej. Wydobywa zwłaszcza jej zabarwienie praktyczne, niekiedy nawet pragmatyczne. Wątek praktyczny i teoretyczny prowadzi do syntezy w „humanizmie polskim”.

“Just War” — political fiction or credible postulate?
„Wojna sprawiedliwa” - pożyteczna fikcja czy realistyczny postulat?
Bartula, Piotr
As the well-known proverb goes, war is a continuation of politics by other means. Every realistic political perspective acknowledges the possibility of war as the last resort in solving agonal conflicts. As such, politics is to war as the threat of force is to its actual use. With skepticism, my paper explores the presupposition that war can be a lawful, legitimate instrument of politics. Specifically, I consider two opposing “just war” paradigms- the realistic and moralistic.
Przedstawię dwa przeciwstawne kanony rozważania wojny sprawiedliwej: realistyczny i moralistyczny.

The ebbs and flows of the Catholicism of Czesław Miłosz in social dimension
Przypływy i odpływy katolicyzmu Miłosza (wymiar społeczny)
Breczko, Jacek
In this article I deal with Czeslaw Milosz’s relationship to Catholicism in the social dimension. We can see in his position an ambivalence, not only in his life, but also in relation to the civilization and political role of the Church: from the strong acceptance on the historical and civilization level (“radical Catholicism”), to a strong dislike of the unions of Catholicism with the nationalism in various countries, especially in Poland; from sympathy for Catholic modernism, to a strong dislike of some post-Vatican II rulings, which was, to some extent, a legacy of modernism. Moreover, Milosz did not want the Christian religion and the Catholic Church to be used politically (either through the left-wing politics, progressive politics, or nationalist politics), but also feared the dominance of the Church, the theocratic attempts. He did not want to subordinate the political sphere to religion or to subordinate religion to the political sphere. I treat this text as contributing to a more general theme, namely the attitude of Polish intellectuals to Catholicism in the 20th century

Philosophy in relation to psychology Adam Mahrburg’s debate with Kazimierz Twardowski
Filozofia wobec psychologii. Polemika Adama Mahrburga z Kazimierzem Twardowskim
Dziedzic, Anna
In 1898, „Przegląd Filozoficzny” („Philosophical Review”) published AdamMahrburg’s polemic with Kazimierz Twardowski’s text Psychology in relation to physiology and philosophy (1897), as well as response of Twardowski and Mahrburg’sfurther polemic. In the background of this dispute were discrepant views on psychology, metaphilosophy and philosophy. Mahrburg, representative of critical positivism, supporter of Kantian agnosticism and Wundtian physiological psychology, didn’t understand Brentano’s program of empirical psychology, supported by Twardowski. Besides, Mahrburg had different views on philosophy’s function: for him philosophy was theory of science. Therefore he rejected both Twardowski’s idea of philosophy as a group of sciences and his specific concept of relations between psychology and philosophy.
W 1898 r. na łamach „Przeglądu Filozoficznego” opublikowano polemikę Adama Mahrburga z tekstem Kazimierza Twardowskiego Psychologia wobec fizjologii i filozofii (1897), a także odpowiedź Twardowskiego i dalszą replikę Mahrburga. Tłem tego sporu były różnice w poglądach psychologicznych, metafilozoficznych i filozoficznych. Mahrburg, przedstawiciel pozytywizmu krytycznego, zwolennik kantowskiego agnostycyzmu i Wundtowskiej psychologii fizjologicznej, nie rozumiał Brentanowskiego programu psychologii empirycznej, zawartego w tezach Twardowskiego.

The concept of an object persisting through time from the standpoint of the Lvov-Warsaw School
Pojęcie przedmiotu trwającego w czasie w rozumieniu przedstawicieli Szkoły Lwowsko-Warszawskiej
Gryganiec, Mariusz
There is considerable convergence between the views of many members of the Lvov-Warsaw School and the positions endorsed in the current debate on persistence through time. But there are some significant differences, too. In this paper, I am going to reconstruct and to analyse several positions of some representatives of the Lvov-Warsaw School on the issue in question. Then I shall identify and shortly describe those elements of the reconstructed accounts which are, on the one hand, specific to the Lvov-Warsaw School and, on the other hand, mostly ignored in the present-day metaphysical dispute. The general message of the paper is the contention that although there were no systematic separate research within the Lvov-Warsaw School on persistence through time, some solutions and interpretations put forward by its members can serve as an interesting enrichment of the ongoing debate.

Between Philosophy and Ideology Disputes on Philosophy in the Post-war Polish Science
Pomiędzy filozofią a ideologią
Konstańczak, Stefan
The article presents the situation of Polish philosophy in the post-war period, when there was an attempt to dominate science by Marxists. The culmination of this process happened during the session of the First Congress of Polish Science (29.06—2.07.1951). The Congress had a symbolic meaning for the Polish philosophy because along with the Congress independent philosophical magazines were closed, pre-war professors were dismissed, and also a social scientific movement was liquidated. The state authorities considered philosophy, next to law and history, as disciplines which were essential for the promotion of Marxist ideology. As a result, the pre-war research and didactic professors at universities were replaced by “educated Marxists”, for whom philosophy was only a discipline which served for ideological tasks. For many years it changed the way of practicing philosophy in Poland, the consequences of which can be felt to this day.

About program disputes in Polish Marxism Adam Schaff on the evolution of the philosophical views of Leszek Kołakowski
Adam Schaff wobec ewolucji poglądów filozoficznych Leszka Kołakowskiego. O sporach programowych w polskim marksizmie
Merda, Renata
In my article I intend to analyze L. Kołakowski’s departure from Marxism. I will conduct my reflections in the context of his relationship with Adam Schaff. It is precisely this that A. Schaff was the promoter of the dissertation of Master and Candidate (PhD) Leszek Kołakowski. Both these philosophers in the sixties of thetwentieth century revisited their views on Marxism by entering into a current called revisionism. Leszek Kołakowski, however, criticized Marxism and became his leading critic, while Adam Schaff attempted to reform it by enriching the existing ideology of man’s philosophy. The views of both philosophers differed from the official version of Marxism. While Kolakowski had completely escaped from Marxism, Schaff triedto defend him. Schaff did not particularly approve the assessment of Marxism embodied in Mainstream Marxism of Kołakowski. It is not by chance, therefore, that both philosophers can be regarded as the most outstanding representatives of Marxism before 1968 in Poland.Their views were not always contradictory, but they were often similar because Schaff approached Kolakowski talking about ecumenical Marxism — and therefore their antagonism was primarily personal and less philosophical.

Disputes about Platonic legacy of Władysław Witwicki (1878—1948)
Spory wokół spuścizny Platońskiej Władysława Witwickiego (1878-1948)
Mróz, Tomasz
The paper discusses shortly the reception of W. Witwicki’s translations and commentaries to Plato’s dialogues. The emphasis is laid on the initial absence of philosophers among the reviewers of Witwicki’s works, for the overwhelming majority of the reviewers consisted of philologists and writers. In the course of time, when translations by other scholars appeared, Witwicki’s works gained wider reception among professionals and many critical assessments, which were sometimes unjust. His translations, nevertheless, still play a protreptic role as the first.

Benedykt Bornstein’s reception of Immanuel Kant’s philosophy
Benedykta Bornsteina recepcja filozofii Immanuela Kanta
Śleziński, Krzysztof
Benedykt Bornstein belongs to a group of philosophers, who demonstrated an opportunity for development of the scientific metaphysics with the use of the axiomatic method. His general theory of existence was developed under the influence of critical discussion on the major problems related to Kant’s theory of cognition. Arguments presented in this article are to be an attempt to recognise all the assumptions and conditions which our philosopher investigated. It is stressed that in the context of native philosophy Bornstein is neo-kantian as well as a representative of Polish analytical philosophy. However, his epistemological and ontological analyses have not met the proper reception by the environment of Lvov-Warsaw School. Although, he has remained Kazimierz Twardowski’s student in terms of character ofhis methodological research, strive for terminological precision and the use of formal language in his arguments.

Polish Messianic thought in Tadeusz Kroński’s analyses
Polska myśl mesjanistyczna w analizach Tadeusza Krońskiego
Wawrzynowicz, Andrzej
Tadeusz Kroński (1907—1958) was one of the most influential representatives of Polish post-war Hegelianism. He was also regarded as the spiritual father of the Warsaw school of the history of ideas. In the 1950s, Kroński published historico-philosophical analyses focused on the ideas propounded by 19th centuryPolish Messianists of the inter-uprising period, presenting an outright negative view on the movement. Kroński does not see any significant features of theoretical continuity between the tradition of 19th century Polish Hegelianism, shaped by historical influences of the Romantic Messianic ideology (as formulated by Libelt and Cieszkowski), and his own philosophical position. The present study is aimed at a critical verification of Kroński’s analyses. It seeks to investigate the origins of the assumption regarding the fundamental discontinuity of both historical lines of development of Polish Hegelianism. Also, an attempt is made to delineate the actual extent of realization of the postulate of radical rejection of Messianic ideas.
Tadeusz Kroński (1907-1958) – jeden z najbardziej wpływowych przedstawicieli powojennego heglizmu polskiego, uznawany za ojca duchowego warszawskiej szkoły historyków idei, w swoich publikowanych w latach pięćdziesiątych XX wieku historyczno-filozoficznych analizach myśli dziewiętnastowiecznych mesjanistów polskich epoki międzypowstaniowej przedstawia skrajnie negatywny obraz tego nurtu. Kroński nie dostrzega istotnych rysów ciągłości teoretycznej między ulegającą historycznym wpływom romantycznej ideologii mesjanistycznej tradycją dziewiętnastowiecznego heglizmu polskiego (spod znaku Libelta i Cieszkowskiego) a własnym stanowiskiem filozoficznym. Tekst podejmuje próbę weryfikacji krytycznej tych analiz, zbadania genealogii założenia o zasadniczej nieciągłości obu tych historycznych linii rozwoju heglizmu polskiego, a także określenia faktycznego zakresu realizacji formułowanego tu postulatu radykalnego odrzucenia idei mesjanizmu.

Neo-Kantian roots in Stanisław Brzozowski’s philosophy. Review of the problem of regularity
Kantowskie ugruntowanie podstaw filozofii Stefana Brzozowskiego. Krytyka problemu systematyczności
Witkowska, Natalia
The article focuses on the presentation of Kantian sources in Stanisław Brzozowski’s philosophy, who was an outstanding philosopher, writer, and critic. Due to the value of his work, appreciated for over a hundred years by both domestic and foreign researchers, in the article, I emphasize the issue related to the proper conduct of the analysis of its activities. I also point out the most frequent errors that lead to interpretative contradictions within the philosophical reflection that Stanisław Brzozowski created.

Hans Wagner as Neo-Neo-Kantian
Hans Wagner jako neoneokantysta
Pietras, Alicja
The aim of the paper is to briefly present the philosophy of Hans Wagner (1917-2000) as belonging to the last phase of the development of the German transcendental philosophy. Hans Wagner’s philosophy is presented as an attempt to synthesize earlier positions developed on the basis of this tradition, namely the synthesis of: (a) neo-Kantianism with post-neo-Kantianism, (b) Kant's philosophy with Hegel's philosophy, (c) neo-Kantian transcendentalism with Husserl's transcendentalism, (d) the philosophy of transcendental subject (Kant, neo-Kantianism, phenomenology) with the philosophy of empirical subject (Hönigswald, Heidegger, Sartre). The main theoretical figure of Hans Wagner’s philosophy is the problem of two aspects of human thinking: its absoluteness and finiteness. According to Wagner development of the philosophical reflection, which we can observe on the example of the evolution of - originating from Kant - transcendental philosophy, leads to an explanation of the possibility to reconcile these two aspects of human thinking, and thus to answer the very question: how is it possible that our thinking can be both absolute and finished, and what are the consequences of this fact for the status of all cultural products of human thinking, such as: science, morality or law.

Quality of Life as a Philosophical Problem
Jakość życia jako problem filozoficzny
Wojewoda, Mariusz
The article deals with the problem of “quality of life” from the philosophical perspective. In contemporary scientific studies, the issue of quality of life is analyzed in sociological, political and medical aspects. The author of the article is looking for a philosophical model of theoretical reflection on the quality of life, he refers to this problem in the recognition philosophy of values. His research is based on the ideas of Max Scheler, and his later continuators. The author analyzes the problem of “quality of life” in the axiological, biological and cultural perspectives. The philosophical thought, and especially its axiological approach, is necessary to understand the phenomenon of quality of life in different contexts.

‘Unborn’ and ‘indestructible’ as signs of truth in Parmenides in the context of the notion of time
‘Niezrodzony' i 'niezniszczalny’ jako znaki prawdy u Parmenidesa w kontekście pojęcia czasu
Biedrzyński, Dawid Wojciech
Parmenides in his revolt of the first philosophy discarded the principle — arche and introduced in its place being — to eon. The effectivess of this revoltion of thought rested upon — among others — revealing a permanent connection between logic and ontology which connection was most seen in ‘signs of truth’, i.e. features of being. Two of these features — ‘unborn’ and ‘indesrtructible’ — show in a sense entanglement in the context of time whose consideration requires the analysis of Parmenides’ poem and insight into historical-philosophical development of the notion of time from the perspective of its use by natural philosophers in defining the principle — arche.

The Boundaries of Scriptural Cognition. The Examination of śruta-jñāna in its relation to mati-jñāna on the basis of Tattvârtha-sūtra-rāja-vārttika by Akalaṅka
Glinicka, Małgorzata Barbara
The aim of the article is to analyze the chosen passages of Akalaṅka’s Tattvârtha-sūtra-rāja-vārttika (8th c. CE) (mainly RVār 1.9, 20 and 26) in order to find an answer to a question: what are the boundaries of śruta-jñāna (‘scriptural cognition’), especially with reference to mati-jñāna’s (‘sensory cognition’) way of functioning? It aims at indicating particular aspects of relation between these two cognitions, basically the cause and effect order, the overlapping scopes of these two cognitions, a possibility of their erroneousness and various means of their attainment. These four issues could be taken into consideration in order to feature both of them in their mutual references. I attach the short analysis of Jinabhadra Gaṇi’s (6/7th c. CE) Viśeṣâvaśyaka-bhāṣya’s passages to shed light, in contrast, on the other Jain text – anteceding Akalaṅka’s treatise – in which this issue has been undertaken and thus to reveal rudimentary cohesion and coherence within the Jain system of thought.

Critical Metaphysics in the Views of Otto Liebmann and Johannes Volkelt
Kubalica, Tomasz
The article addresses the problem of critical metaphysics in the views of Otto Liebmann and Johannes Volkelt. Their view of metaphysics results from a compromise between science and philosophy. On the one hand, this compromise keeps metaphysics closely in touch with contemporary scientific theory, which means it can participate in the modern civilisation of science and technology, on the other though, it leads to the narrowing down of the universalist philosophical perspective to science, which means abandonment of non-scientific aspects of life. Although in principle open to metaphysical needs of humans, critical metaphysics, on this view, embodies scientific aspirations of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Metaphysical criticism entails self-imposed limits on metaphysical aspirations, but these limitations themselves must stay within reasonable limits; otherwise, it transforms into destructive scepticism.

Idealizm a sceptycyzm
Zeidler, Kurt Walter
The text refers to an interesting, since ancient and important, epistemological problem of justification of our beliefs, and in particular, the so-called final justification. To the recent methodological and epistemological literature, for example, the so-called Münchhausen trilemma of Hans Albert is known. The author argues that this trilemma can be found already in the ancient philosophy, with which the question of the effectiveness of a dispute with skepticism is connected. The most interesting and original is the view of the relationship between idealism and skepticism from the perspective of history of philosophy, philosophy of science and transcendental philosophy.

Emil Lask. W stulecie śmierci
Noras, Andrzej J.
The present article concentrates on depicting the main elements of Emil Lask’s philosophy, a distinguished Neo-Kantianist who, simultaneously, may be regarded as Heidegger’s teacher. The meaning of Lask’s work comes down to several issues, although in this article two of them have been emphasised: first, Kant should not be read in the light of Fichte’s philosophy; second, in Lask’s philosophy the primacy of practical reason in logic, characteristic for the Baden Neo-Kantianism, is questioned. In Lask’s understanding, the logic of philosophy which is the critical theory of cognition derives from the critical consideration over the Baden Neo-Kantianism.

Materia-zło i problem dualizmu pryncypiów. Polemika Proklosa z Plotynem w "De malorum subsistentia"
Woszczyk, Agnieszka
The article aims at illustrating an outline of Proclus’s argumentation leading to the rejection of a thesis about the evil of matter in the context of relevance of objections raised against Plotinus by Diadochus. Proclus, disposing of aporia which Plotinus’s stance is embedded in, creates difficulties instead, which the author of "Enneads" has managed to avoid. An attempt to avert the danger of dualism implies aporetic solutions and, additionally, it generates certain explanatory limitations. These difficulties seem to be the price that Diadochus pays for the axiological neutralization of the matter and apeiron, which happens together with the rejection of parallelism of relation between Good-One and plurality-evil. The existence of relative evil in the forms of parhypostases causes difficulties with the inexplicable presence of irrational elements in the universe, which remain beyond the system of causal influence. Plotinus, in turn, despite the dualistic way of explaining being as a relation of One and Indefinite Dyad (evil-matter) may maintain, which even the polemic with gnostics illustrates, that the whole reality is turned towards Good and that everything, including material universe, is essentially good due to unity. Acknowledging evil per se does not lead in "Enneads" to the devaluation of any form of entitativity, even that clearly marked by the influence of the matter.

Rozumienie pojęcia „próżni” w filozofii Demokryta z Abdery
Biedrzyński, Dawid Wojciech
The paper discusses one of the key notions concerning the basic constituents of the universe, which for Democritus are atoms and vacuum. The primary aim of this article is to show that the complexity of the applied category does not allow for the interpretation of philosophy of atomists as that of naïve materialism. At the same time, it is pointed out that the notion of ‘vacuum’ as used by Democritus suggests a high level of abstraction of his considerations. It is also shown that the category of kenon places Democritus’s philosophy in a wider context of historical-philosophical evolution of such key notions as ‘infinite’ and ‘undefined’.

Fenomenologia Husserla — filozofia podejrzenia czy pewności?
Łaciak, Piotr
The aim of the article is to question the Cartesian interpretation of Husserl’s philosophy. In that interpretation Husserl is regarded as a representative of epistemological fundamentalism characterized by searching for the foundations of cognition in the transcendental consciousness given in the absolute and adequate evidence. The thesis of this article states that the essential anonymity which Husserl ascribes to consciousness is the crucial argument for his questioning of the Cartesian myth of the self-transparency of consciousness and thus allows for regarding him as the master of suspicion in a meaning which Paul Ricoeur has endowed this concept with. According to Husserl, consciousness, at the beginning of philosophical thinking, appears to be unknown, hidden, since a human being living in a natural disposition, is immersed in anonymity and forgets about his own subjectivity. Though this anonymity may be overcome by means of phenomenological reduction, the transcendental consciousness, uncovered due to that reduction, in its deepest layers will remain anonymous and will not present itself adequately in self-reflection.

Dogmatism and Criticism in the Conception of Phenomenological Reduction
Łaciak, Piotr
The author presents his own interpretation of phenomenological reduction taking as a starting point two motives of phenomenology identified by Ernst Tugendhat: the dogmatic motive and the critical motive. In the dogmatic interpretation, phenomenological reduction is driven by the need to meet the criterion of apodictic certainty and means excluding the world from the scope of phenomenological research and limiting it to the realm of transcendental awareness. It is only transcendental awareness that can be apodictically certain; the existence of the world never is. In the critical interpretation, the starting point for philosophizing is not apodictic certainty but a minimum amount of cognitive dogmatism attained through radical criticism. Phenomenological reduction itself no longer entails a subjectivist narrowing down of the field of study, but its expansion into a new domain: the domain of awareness in which the world is being constituted, awareness freed from anonymity. The aim of this critically interpreted reduction is the uncovering of the correlation between awareness and the world, which remains invisible in the natural approach. Reduction brings this correlation to light, suspending prejudices (Vorurteile), which result from the natural approach. The fact that prejudices are suspended means that one refrains from following them blindly, since a characteristic feature of all prejudices is that they do not admit reflection. It is important to distinguish between two types of prejudices: those which enable cognition and those which distort the picture of reality. The author demonstrates that phenomenological reduction may be understood as a postulate of criticism: to suspend prejudices in order to recognize their validity (legitimacy) in their claims to truth or to expose them as false awareness.

Husserl a problem istnienia świata
Łaciak, Piotr
In my paper I discuss Husserl’s standpoint on the existence of world. Addressing this issue the philosopher thinks of the kind of being, outer of consciousness, which is realized in the general thesis of natural attitude. The aim of phenomenological research is to reveal correlation of consciousness and the world, which according to Husserl, becomes transcendental constitution. In the course of explaining this correlation Husserl reveals that the existence of world might be recognized as a correlate of the general thesis of natural attitude, which after phenomenological reduction becomes recognised as the constitutive achievement of consciousness. Transcendental idealism is interpreted in the paper as transcendental monism. Husserl not only questions the possibility of non-cognizable things-in-themselves, but also he uses some broad concept of transcendental subjectivity. The transcendental subjectivity is not opposed to the world, but it includes the world as the subjectivity’s correlate. Strictly speaking, the world is conceived as structure transcendental subjectivity, and the natural attitude might be taken as anonymous modus of transcendental life.

Redukcja transcendentalno-fenomenologiczna a modyfikacja neutralnościowa
Łaciak, Piotr
The paper addresses the relation between transcendental-phenomenological reduction and neutral modification in Edmund Husserl’s phenomenology. According to Husserl, there is both essential kinship and fundamental difference between them. What makes them akin is that they both are characterised as disconnection or bracketing judgement about natural world. What differs them, however, is that neutral modification is a kind of transformation of conviction of existence of the world into neutral consciousness, which does not constitute the world, whereas the transcendental-phenomenological reduction disconnects the world in a way which leads to uncovering the subjectivity that does constitute the world (and subjectivity that constitutes the world is not the neutral consciousness, but a thetic consciousness — positionales Bewusstsein). Hence, the transcendental-phenomenological disconnection of the world does not mean its neutralisation, but rather recognition of being of the world as a result of constitutive performances of transcendental subjectivity.

Poznanie Dobra jako zwieńczenie Platońskiej dialektyki
Olesiński, Dariusz
In "Politeia", making a distinction between three basic types of good: good only for its own sake, good for its own sake and the additional benefits it may bring, and good only with regard to the benefits it brings (Rep. 357b—d) — Plato is in favour of the second option, thus emphasizing the dual (absolute-relative) nature of the good, which turns out to be essential for the proper understanding of its nature. Hence, the supremacy of the Good over other ideas (its location ‑πέκεινα τ‑ς ο‑σίας), presented in books VI and VII may not be understood as the absolute transcendence of being, but it indicates its borderline status which is the result of its dual nature. As a consequence, the Good also appears as a breaking point of the dialectic cognition — on the one hand, as its final aim, on the other hand, as its each time assumed foundation. The Good cannot be the subject of dialectic’s cognition in the sense that being (idea) is, since it is itself a principle which enables all cognition of the idea. In this context dialectics turns out to be a certain type of catharsis, a method of gradual purification of hypothetical logos, which leads to the discovering of truth that is hidden behind it. In accordance with Plato’s metaphor, it should present Good as the clearest spot of white which does not have any additional elements in it.

O możliwości rozwiązania aporii monizmu gnozeologicznego w filozofii Plotyna
Oleś, Rafał
Cognition assumes difference between the subject and the object and their unity at the same time; gnoseological monism is a thesis about extra-subjective and extra-objective grounds for this unity; aporia of gnoseological monism prompts one to choose: either is the subject-object difference contained in One or One is „an empty X” resembling nothingness. On the basis of Plotinus’s philosophy the subject-object difference is the first form of relativity; the difference is then established together with the Mind’s knowledge about the subject (the second part of the article). The relativity of the subject and the object becomes expressed in the aporia of self-knowledge which may be presented in a form of a question: how is multitude (subject and objects) a unity (self-knowlegde)? A solution to this problem comes down to demonstrating that without self-knowledge, there is no knowledge: self-knowledge is essential to recognize knowledge about one’s attitude towards their own cognition as true or false — and more broadly, “noetic self-knowledge” is essential to recognize knowledge of the Mind about the approach towards being as truth. In the third part of the article the act of noetic perception (and, more precisely “noetic clarity”) is analysed in the light of two conceptions of principles: principle as a sufficient rationale, and principle as a source of value of something. “Noetic clarity” is simultaneously a direct and rational cognition (unity of things-reasons and things-contents); “clear” is everything that is given together with its rationale; but, at the same time, every being — in noetic depiction — evinces the power of completing scarcities with some defined good (realizing the second sense of the principle — that every being appears as a certain self-consolidating power, that constitutes a value in and of itself). Both these aspects of noetic clarity indicate One as its basis (the thesis of gnoseological monism) and, simultaneously — by means of axiological characteristic of perception itself — allow for regarding One as “something more” than “an empty X”, that is, as Good.

Oryginalność doświadczenia historycznego w ujęciu Franka Ankersmita
Sawicka, Jolanta
The aim of the article is to present the originality of Frank Ankersmit’s depiction of historical experience. The author of the article emphasises that the structure of historical experience in Ankersmit’s understanding and the structure of mystical experience in James’s study have many common elements. Then, the author makes a comparison between the conception of historical experience with that of mystical experience, in a way W. James understood them. She raises a question whether, in regard to these similarities, it may be stated that historical experience is a variety of a mystical one. If so, then to what extent the category of truth is valid in historical texts, since the historical experience and historical knowledge are questions which should be put in parenthesis with regard to their untranslatability into language and their intersubjective incommunicability which may be observed in the case of a mystical expeirence.

Fenomenologia a motyw teoretyczny i praktyczny
Wesołowska, Agnieszka
The deliberations presented in the article are concentrated around a thesis that the unchanging framework of Husserl’s philosophical thinking is based on the simultaneous occurrence of theoretical and practical-ethical motive. This thesis, together with considerations presented in the text, are the result of reflection on the aim and tasks of phenomenology as transcendental philosophy, philosophy understood as science striving for the consolidating of cognition and revealing findings that are relevant to one’s life. The practical-ethical motivation that accompanies deliberations of epistemological nature influences the specificity of phenomenological philosophy, phenomenological inquiries and the change of approach. Phenomenology considered in terms of theoretical and practical motives, in the rational and critical thinking, includes the relation between the sphere of cognition and the sphere of life, between the theoretical-scientific sphere and the practical-ethical one.

Fenomenologiczne wątki filozofii dramatu
Wesołowska, Agnieszka
The paper depicts phenomenological threads of philosophy of drama. My aim here is to analyse the dramatic creature in its phenomenological aspect rooted in the thought of Józef Tischner. In analysis of axiological-agatological character of the egotic sphere, Tischner shows ego as a creature of internal rift. In the paper I focus on three threads of Tischner’s philosophy of drama and his concept of dramatic creature. First, the issue of the source experience as a starting point of philosophy. Second, the egotic thread; and thirdly, the dramatic-one, that is axiological interpretation of egology. Taking into account some selected issues which are core of Tischner’s philosophy of drama, makes it able to show his thought in his phenomenological provenance.

Egologiczna a podmiotowa struktura świadomości
Wesołowska, Agnieszka
The paper discusses Tischner’s interpretation of Husserl’s conception of consciousness in two aspects: egologic and subjective. In his notion of transcendental consciousness Husserl equates the transcendental ego with the subject of consciousness. However, in the course of development of his theory, he supplements the theory of ego with so-called habitual properties theory. Tischner stresses and characterises the difference between the transcendental ego and the subject of consciousness in his doctoral thesis Ja transcendentalne w filozofii E. Husserla (Transcendental ego in E. Husserl’s philosophy). According to Tischner, Husserl, by recognising the habitual properties of transcendental ego blurs the difference between the transcendental ego and a person. Hence, Tischner claims, two levels of consciousness (not recognise by Husserl himself) need to be recognised: the subjective level, which determines the subject as indispensable element of consciousness, and the egologic level, which refers to self-contained element of consciousness, which function as the transcendental ego. Setting apart heterogenic levels of analysis, as emphasised by Tischner, appears to be the key factor of development of his own work.

Luck, Ignorance, and Moral Attitude
Machura, Piotr
Public opinion has it that ethics should be concerned with studying and providing precise and reliable rules of conduct. This view is based in a long philosophical tradition which begins with the Stoics and continues at least to Kant; it is, however, a false view. There are good reasons to turn our attention to these aspects of moral thinking which refer to and emphasize the element of risk and uncertainty. In the article I briefly discuss two of such reasons: the problem of moral luck and the problem of action based on ignorance. Consideration of these two problems leads to the conclusion that the most tricky element in moral thinking is the firm belief of the subject in the truth of the premises on which they base their actions and in the irrelevance of external factors to the assessment of their deeds. In this light I argue that the basic requirement for a moral justification of a particular action is not its conformity to a certain set of rules but the subject’s critical reflection on their course of action. Indeed, what turns an attitude into a moral attitude is an amoral, epistemological factor: criticism and openness to uncertainty.

Dobro a wolność. Wokół teorii możliwości Marthy Nussbaum
Machura, Piotr
The paper addresses some of the aspects of the neo-Aristotelian concept of good on the basis of Martha Nussbaum’s capabilities approach. The author’s general thesis is that the idea of good organizes its normativity along two vectors pointed towards nature and emancipation, which are interlinked, that is — the normativity of the good is always organized by both of them and it is inappropriate to refer to one of them only. This fault is made, the author believes, by Nussbaum who does not offer enough resources to establish a sound naturalistic evaluative standard in her theory. To address this issue the author starts by discussing the capabilities approach as a form of the concept of good and proceeds by analysing Nussbaum’s view on family as an exemplar of the inadequacies of the approach.

Homerycka psyche jako potoczna kategoria ducha zmarłego
Fajler, Monika
The article presents an interpretation of Homeric psyche alternative to the one existing in literature on the subject, where it used to be presented as a soul-breath which gives life to a human being. The interpretation presented here, depicts psyche as a common, pre-reflexive idea of a phantom-spirit, popular in the European culture, being the medium of the universal anthropological convictions. This understanding of psyche, ignored by the examiners of Homer, is in the author’s opinion the basic meaning of psyche arising directly from the texts of Homer’s poems.

The Deaths of Socrates
Kopka, Aleksander
The article is an attempt to present in Plato’s thought traits of mourning philosophy, as the one oriented towards continuous referring of subject (in its structural and ontological heterogeneity) to (his/her own) death. To that end the author follows the deconstruction of Plato’s text conducted by Jacques Derrida, mainly in "La pharmacie de Platon", and continued in "La carte postale". Simultaneously, she intends to prove how the text of the dialogues itself shows the incoherence of Plato’s metaphysics, with the special consideration of immortality of soul, relation of writing to life speech and the role of myth in the discourse on immortality. Such a presented project of Plato’s thought as a philosophy of camouflaged mourning, the author combines with the fundamental, from the perspective of Derrida’s mourning thought, problem of postponement, auto-immunological reaction, appropriating and idealization of the death as well as his/her return by means of his/her name.

Pytanie o gościnność w filozofii Jacques’a Derridy
Kopka, Aleksander
In this paper I sketch the problem of hospitality as developed by Jacques Derrida in his late work. I pinpoint the dependence between hospitality and deconstruction arguing that the hospitality is not an unexpected turn in relation to Derrida’s earlier work in deconstruction of metaphysics, but its further development on ethical and political level. Derrida keeps taking hospitality as an alternative name or an example of deconstruction, showing in this peculiar metaphor quasi-ontological structure of trace haunted by what precedes and what follows it, sabotaging its homogeneity and integrity.

„Dzień bez jutra” jako cecha filozoficznego sposobu życia w Platońskim "Fedonie"
Subczak, Marcin
The present article focuses on the ethos of philosophical way of life occuring in Plato’s "Fedon", the essence of which is depicted in the phrase “a day without tomorrow.” This expression suggests that character of a philosopher’s existenece which allows for a significant redefinition of life, death and immortality. Their traditional understanding could imply certain chronological consequence which, in a philosopher’s life, becomes obliterated. A philosopher — due to the specificity of his work — “already” exists in the dimension of eternity of “things themselves”, no longer waiting for any final fulfillment in immortality that ends one’s life. The borders between life and death are being crossed. The beauty and good of just actions, based on the experience of stability of “things themselves”, moves the enthusiast for wisdom to the sphere where existence, undisturbed by the spectrum of deadly end dominates.

Aktualność Sigmunda Freuda: aporie teorii queer i ich przezwycieżenie
Szmaglińska, Katarzyna
Contemporary interpretations of psychoanalysis (among others A. Leder’s, A. Tauber’s) treat Freud’s thought as a philosophical one (anthropological model). Freud’s adoption of Kant’s transcendental assumption allows for such — unnaturalistic interpretation of psychoanalysis. Reconstructing the ontological and epistemological assumptions of the Viennese psychiatrist it may be proven that: first, psychoanalysis is congruent with queer theory in terms of significance of sexuality in the process of subject creation (“a crack in the subject”); second, at the starting point of both theories the instability of identity, including sexual identity, may be stated. It provides the ground for the comparison of these two conceptions. The queer theory is usually criticized for not presenting any unambiguous ethical conclusions with regard to limitations of human sexuality. In the present work, the author would like to illustrate that in a psychoanalytical model the aims of development, which queer theory is lacking, may be indicated and, as a result, also certain moral restrictions on various forms of sexual “self-expression” may be observed. The specific tools of Freud’s therapy allow for ethical interpretation of the message that psychoanalysis offers and that may be reduced to the individual’s understanding of the necessity for self-restriction of his/her sexuality — the self restriction which is more or less consistent with the solutions of contemporary psychiatry and sexology expressed in a partnership norm formula.

Współczesne filozoficzne interpretacje psychoanalizy Sigmunda Freuda. Przegląd wybranych stanowisk
Szmaglińska, Katarzyna
The author of the paper discusses three of contemporary interpretations ofFreud’s psychoanalysis. Most recent interpretations go beyond one-sidedness of pre-vious ones (that is, biologism and hermeneutics) which took theory and practice sep-arately. Thanks to reconstruction of some of philosophical consequences of Freud’sthought — ontological (anthropological), epistemological and ethical — psychoanaly-sis might be taken as metaphysical concept (Andrzej Leder), moral philosophy(Alfred I. Tauber) or it might be interpreted dialectically (Jon Mills). The authorpoints out some key elements of Freud’s theory, which make these interpretationspossible, and in this way she highlights validity of Freud and vivid reception of histhought in philosophy.

Turoń-Kowalska, Agnieszka
The term “idolatry of politics” occurs in Leszek Kołakowski’s deliberations when individuals turn their political engagement into moral rules, that is, they create their gods ad hoc for their individual aims in politics. The thinker sees the reasons for the crisis of European culture and civilization in the intellectual legacy of the Enlightenment, and with it, the need for the beginning of the “idolatry of politics”. The first reason is the abandonment of the “absolute values” in the post-modern times, which has led to relativism in culture. The second issue is the distinction between the collective and personal problems of human nature and, consequently, the problem of responsibility for one’s actions. The third area which exerts destructive influence on civilization is the erosion of historical consciousness. In Kołakowski’s works, a cure for the “idolatry of politics” may be found in his conception of “philosophy of a jester” and “inconsistent inconsistency”.

Sceptyczna postawa Leszka Kołakowskiego wobec filozofii chrześcijańskiej
Turoń-Kowalska, Agnieszka
The paper presents Leszek Kołakowski’s attitude to Christian philosophy. Very often it is seen as informed by scepticism in the sense of some negative vigilance against dogmas and non-scientific contents. An important element of Kołakowski’s biography is his initial fascination with post-war socialism and subsequent “Hegelian bite”, which manifested in harsh criticism of Polish Catholicism. After the change of his views and compulsory emigration he kept researching religious attitude and religion itself. The paper concerns his views in this matter with exclusion of his “ideological” analyses. It consists of, first of all, Kołakowski’s attitude to transcendence-existence relation of medieval and modern order including the question of evil manifesting itself in the world as conceived in Christian philosophy. It also aims to give answer to the question of what form should Christianity take in the face of scientific concepts of world and man’s place within it. It deals also with Kołakowski’s attempt to define religion in the context of epistemological separation of the act of faith from intellectual cognition. According to him, religion should not pretend to attain a scientific level, which however does not negate its meaning for man.

Różne znaczenia szkoły w filozofii a neokantyzm Leonarda Nelsona
Kubalica, Tomasz
The theme of the text is the interpretation of the philosophy of Leonard Nelson (1882—1927) and his place in the history of philosophy. The author asks whether his philosophy should be classified as Neo-Kantianism or outside its borders? In response to this question the author has developed his own instruments. On the one hand, he tried to determine the concept of Neo-Kantianism and thus, Fries’s reference to Kant; on the other hand, he applied the four-point scale for the classification of different philosophy communities and, in particular, the concept of philosophical school. In the light of these assumptions he has classified Nelson’s philosophy as psychological Neo-Kantianism.

Patočka i Masaryk
Zumr, Josef
The aim of the paper is to analyse relation between Jan Patočka and Tomáš G.Masaryk. The former was referring to the latter’s concepts throughout his work, inmost cases from the perspective of Edmund Husserl’s phenomenology. According toPatočka, both in Masaryk and Husserl the most important symptom of crisis is thepositivist hypostising of the scientific method and the loss of religion. The commonstarting point of both theories was the thesis according to which Europe is goingthrough a spiritual crisis which arises from subjectivism. The difference betweenthem, however, was in the concepts of the ways to resolve the crisis. According toMasaryk, the solution is to be found in restoration of religion, whereas Husserl seesit in transcendental phenomenology. Patočka was wrong when he stressed how muchout of date were Masaryk’s views. For they might be taken as topical in their moraland religious aspects, value of which was proved during the hard times for Czechand Slovak nations.

U źródeł problematyki podmiotowości poznania. Krytyczne stanowisko Ksenofanesa z Kolofonu wobec poprzedzającej go tradycji mitologicznej i filozoficznej
Śpiewak, Sebastian
The aim of presented paper is to place the work of Xenophanes of Colophon in the history of Greek philosophy. His discovery of subjectivity of cognition might be taken as the next step in emancipation of logos from pre-philosophical way of understanding the world. The author broadens John Burnet’s interpretation of Xenophanes’ fragments, taking the general critique of earlier Greek thought — both mythological and philosophical (philosophy of physis) as its basis. Exemplification of Xenophanes’ modernisation of philosophical discourse is his understanding of truth, which he divides into two notions referring to the problem of subjectivity of cognition.

The Homeric Source of the Category of δόξα. Δοκέω from a Cognitive-Presumptive Perspective: A Presumption on the Present
Śpiewak, Sebastian
The objective of this article is to determine the sources of the philosophical notion of δόξα, understood as presumption. The analyses presented here focus upon the gnoseological content of the concept of presumption as it occurs in poetry traditionally attributed to Homer (the “Iliad”, the “Odyssey”,1 the so-called “Homeric Hymns”). Two fundamental aspects of such content give the concept of δόξα its philosophical significance: its objective aspect and its subjective aspect. The complexity of the problematic mutual relationship between them manifests itself with particular clarity in lexis beloging to the semantic group of the verb Δοκέω, which, for the purposes of the present study, is hereby described as a group expressing presupposition limited to the present. The reflections and analyses presented in this article allow one to determine the critical foundations of the Greek epistemological thought, whose actual point of departure is the problem of the status of the presupposition and its relationship to the concepts of truth and knowledge. 1 Henceforth, in-text references to the “Illiad” and the “Odyssey” will be marked parenthetically as “Il”. and “Od”. (respectively), followed by the numbers of the book and the verse. Also, unless stated otherwise, dictionary references are made to the so-called “Liddell Lexicon”: Henry George Liddell, Robert Scott, Henry Stuart Jones and Roderick McKenzie, “A Greek-English Lexicon: With a Revised Supplement” (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1996). All references to this editon shall henceforth be marked as LSJR.

Metafizyka krytyczna Ottona Liebmanna
Kubalica, Tomasz
In this paper I analyse the notion of critique, its subject and scope of validity in the context of critical metaphysics of Otto Liebmann. The main argument is preceded by introductory remarks in which historical context and intellectual background of this notion are discussed. The main focus of the paper is on the standpoint of Otto Liebmann, author of curricular for neo-Kantianism "Kant und die Epigonen" (1865), and who — however usually conceived to be forerunner of neo-Kantianism — quite paradoxically takes somehow different position on metaphysics. It is different from so-called late neo-Kantianism which declared itself as opposite to metaphysics. Contrary to this, Liebmann accepted the possibility of metaphysics as a kind of crowning achievement and climax of scientific theories.

Problem pewności w neokantyzmie Johannesa Volkelta
Kubalica, Tomasz
The paper is devoted to an analysis of the epistemology of Johannes Volkelt, its main arguments and the relation of Volkelt’s theory of certainty to Kant and other contemporary philosophers, such as Edmund Husserl. Volkelt’s problem of scepticism is closely related to the positivist principle, which aimed at limiting all knowledge to our individual sphere of representations. This principle in Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason means the unknowableness of the thing in itself. Volkelt seeks for answer to the question about the trans-subjective knowledge. He finds a basis for the certainty in the dispresuppositional theory of the transsubjective minimum. The acceptance of the trans-subjective minimum determines too the possibility of metaphysics.

Związek metafilozofii i filozofii. Próba charakterystyki
Makuła, Szymon
The paper discusses the relation of philosophy and meta-philosophy. With the use of Jerzy Perzanowski’s notion of characteristics of science and Jan Woleński’s meta-methodological typology, the author aims at presenting meta-philosophy as part of philosophy itself. Seen along such lines, meta-philosophy is part of methodology of philosophy which relates classical problems of epistemology to philosophy, just as philosophy of science does it for science. The author argues that the problems of meta-philosophy are in fact philosophical problems and sketches possible meta-philosophical positions analogous to the standpoints in methodology already given. Obviously, this way of presenting meta-philosophy is only one of its possible programs. Yet, the benefit of it is an already given conceptual framework taken from philosophy of science.

Why Should We Think Critically? Comments on the Critical Rationalism of Hans Albert
Wieczorek, Krzysztof T.
Leszek Kołakowski draws attention to the fact that rationalism as a philosophical method and definitive certainty as the aim are mutually irreconcilable. Each rationalist philosophy must leave a margin for uncertainty, lest it transforms into dull dogmatism. This observation of the Polish thinker becomes a source of inspiration for Hans Albert. In his work “Science and the Search for Truth”, he agrees with Kołakowski that goals of philosophical endeavours need redefining and puts forward his own metaphilosophical proposal, which specifies what philosophy can and should achieve in the framework of critical realism. The author examines and evaluates Albert’s proposal, referring to another view of the nature and role of philosophy as the assessment criterion—the one presented by José Ortega y Gasset in his study “En torno à Galileo” [“About Galileo”] and other writings.

Nasze małe umieranie. Doświadczenie przemijalności świata w kontekście życia potocznego
Wieczorek, Krzysztof T.
The paper offers a tentative analysis of some possible forms of the experience of world fading and impermanence of one’s existence as contemporary agent, immersed in world of everyday life. The starting point of the analysis is Jan Patočka’s model of “the natural man”. The author of the paper modifies it to make is suitable for description of civilization of the 21st-century human whose “natural world” is much more dense, more saturated with both technological artefacts and information, which he or she is able to assimilate only partially. The author claims that a man living in the environment suffused with items and information, spontaneously generates a strategy of evading important problems of life, and if it fails, found themself hopeless and lost. In some cases this feelings are generated by unexpected confrontation of their self-consciousness with the experience of inevitable fading, when — as Patočka rightly observes — the agent faces “spiritual shock”. The author outlines some of the consequences of this shock in the last part of the paper.

Problem indywidualizmu w Stanisława Brzozowskiego filozofii czynu
Brzozowski, Tomasz Tadeusz
During Brzozowski’s lifetime, individualism, taken as philosophical standpoint, was one of typical theoretical tools. After the “standing on the edge of a precipice” period in 1901—1903 he was struggling with the cultural crisis, in this time a common experience, hence, the activity of the agent taken as an individual, showed up as a way beyond contemplation, opening the possibility of individual and unlimited acting, which could transform the passive subject into a real creator. Brzozowski’s individualism includes axiological and cultural relativization, which enabled him to link different aspects of Nietzsche’s, Kant’s and Fichte’s theories. This syncretism remained open to some logical difficulties, however, with which Brzozowski struggled to the end of his work. With a critique of naturalism, which he found to be scientific justification of relativism, he drew upon Kant and Fichte and formulated anew the primal standpoint of radical individualism by granting a value-creative character to subjective human thought. This way the individual self makes the world behind it the space of consolidating values.

Tożsamość w płynie: "homo aestheticus" między regałami
Sułkowska-Janowska, Mariola
The paper deals with the problem which seems to be one of dominant features of postmodern discourse, that is, the problem of identity. The author supplements the philosophical and sociological attitude towards this issue with aesthetical context, which, as it shows up, defines some important elements that co-determine the process of postmodern auto-creation. The trans-categorial notion of “aesthetic identity”, emerging from this process, which exceeds and at the same time gathers different aspects of “identity” discourse, emphasises first of all the bodily aspect and its surprising, especially from the point of view of traditional philosophy, role in creating liquid, performative postmodern identity.

Zakład ateisty — współczesna odpowiedź na argumentację Pascala
Wójtowicz, Marek
Pascal’s Wager is one of those philosophical issues which keep provoke reflection and searching for their new interpretations. It might be claimed that the argument from the well-known fragment of Pensées draws the reader’s attention first of all thanks to radicalism of its ultimate conclusion (“The faith in God is the only rational human attitude”). For more than 300 years new arguments for and against the premises, the argument and the conclusion of the wager have been formulated. Recently a strong trend towards formulating new arguments for or against God’s existence or rationality of theism, which make a reference to Pascal’s Wager, might be observed. One of the arguments made is the Atheist’s Wager, usually ascribed to Michael Martin, although its sources might be found in some of ancient philosophers. This argument, just as the one by Pascal, analyses the consequences of two opposite attitudes towards God’s existence. However, the conclusion of Atheist’s Wager (“Atheism is more rational than theism”) is just opposite to the one of Pascal’s argument. It is important to notice that there are various variants of Atheist’s Wager in which different aspects of the problem of rationality of theism and atheism are emphasized.

Josepha Maréchala badania nad psychologią doświadczenia mistycznego a problem empirycznego determinizmu
Bańka, Aleksander
The paper deals with the issue of the studies on mystical experience led in first half of 20th century by Joseph Maréchal, Belgian philosopher and the creator of transcendental Thomism. His most important work in this area is "Studies in psychology of mystics" ("Études sur la Psychologie des Mystiques"), first volume of which was published in 1924. Maréchal’s research, apart from the attempt made to specify the nature of mystical experience on the basis of the concept of the dynamic purpose of intellect and on the problem of so-called sense of presence, concerned also some methodological issues. Making use of his background in biology and psychology, Maréchal focused on the question of the possibility of applying the methods of empirical sciences in psychology of mystical experience. This was first of all aimed at application of those methods to analysing both special phenomenon related to mystical experience and its essential hidden depth. This paper aims at showing how Maréchal, using the tools of philosophers, evaluates the possibility of using scientific methods to study phenomenological and criticises some deterministic presuppositions underlying those methods.

Antropologiczno-egzystencjalne podstawy Josepha Maréchala studiów nad mistyką
Bańka, Aleksander
The paper aims at revealing theoretical basis of studies in mysticism conducted by Belgian Jesuit Joseph Maréchal. It is focused on the key issue of unification of man and God. This problem has its precisely defined, anthropological and existential context which in Maréchal’s work comes down to the question on the nature of the substantial centre of the soul in which this unification shall take place. The paper argues that in Maréchal’s analysis the centre of the soul, or substantial ego, equates with the possible intellect and in some cases it might be taken as not only the ontic basis for acts of cognition, but also for mystical phenomena.

Comments on the Sources of Greek Philosophical Criticism
Kubok, Dariusz
The present article attempts to shed light on the sources of philosophical criticism of early Greece and on the origins of the critical attitude adopted by the thinkers of the period. Above all, however, reflections presented hereby are meant to serve as a backdrop for analyses of a much broader scope. The study seeks to identify the defining characteristics of early Greek criticism, upon which basisthe author puts forth a proposition for a general typology of its forms. Complementing the present comments is a brief discussion of the suggested types of philosophicalcriticism in light of the views of some of the leading philosophers of the time.

“Being Critical,” Meaning What?
Noras, Andrzej J.
The article builds on the observation made by Josef Pieper, who writes about the critical attitude: “‘kritisch’ sein besage für den Philosophierenden so viel wie: sich darum bekümmern, daß nur ja nicht etwas ausgelassen wird.” Thus, the focus of the article is on the attempts to define philosophy through the prism of criticism, undertaken by some of the most significant philosophers of the first half of the 20th century, such as Leonard Nelson, Max Scheler, Karl Jaspers and Nicolai Hartmann.

The Freudian “Hermeneutics of Suspicion” and Historical Source Critique
Pawelec, Tomasz
The article concerns some aspect of the impact which psychoanalysis (depth psychology) had on the research practice of historiography. The author asks in what ways “psychoanalytic thinking” modified the handling of a historical source. He argues that the basis for the modification was a unique “hermeneutics of suspicion,” embedded in depth psychology. At the core of this hermeneutics is the attitude of a psychoanalytic therapist—a search for “a deeper meaning” of a particular psychopathological symptom, a meaning cunningly concealed but at the same time indirectly (and perversely) enacted and communicated by this symptom. The article identifies the main reasons for hermeneutics of suspicion penetrating historians’ way of thinking: “ontological” (connected with the specific view of the historical process adopted by historiographers of psychoanalytic sympathies) and “methodological” (related to the discovery and affirmation of the methodological “kinship” between researching history and practicing psychoanalysis). The author further argues that, contrary to superficial readings, psychoanalytic hermeneutics of suspicion is not just a radicalized version of the critical attitude towards the source, which by default marks scientific historiography in its various forms, but that it goes beyond it in important ways. The article considers also various practical consequences of the presence of this kind of hermeneutics in handling historical sources.
