The early stimulation of children suspected of atypical brain development. Case study
The article presents and emphasises any early actions and planned activities taken to support
the development of children who are in the early stages of development visible symptoms of atypical
brain development (ABD). The methods and forms of early therapeutic intervention and its impact
on children’s development are discussed on the selected case studies. It should be pointed out that the
need for multidisciplinary diagnosis of children and then the consequences of the lack of specialised
holistic therapy, which should be implemented are also indicated in the article. What is more, the article
presents a proposal for “Therapeutic work program for children with ABD”, containing physical development,
visual perception and spatial orientation, speech and thinking development and improvement
of reading skills. The above-mentioned program is a good example of supporting the early development
of children from infancy period till a primary school period.

Stages of diagnosis and patient rehabilitation after placing cochlear implant
Cochlear implants (CI) are surgically implanted electronic devices that enable individuals
who are profoundly deaf to hear. It should be pointed out that a surgically implanted device does not
provide a sense of sound totally . It does allow the deaf to recognize sounds and help to understand
speech. However, after placing a cochlear implant the quality of sound is different from natural hearing
and takes time to learn and recognize the memory signs. The article consists of preliminary diagnosis
and stages of patient rehabilitation before and after placing CI.

Music and music playing in defeating communication and linguistic difficulties at
autistic children
Autism in spite of so many studies and experiments that take in recent years, there
remains still the subject of lively discussion. Often, even disputes as to its complex, controversial
nature. Numerous studies, which so far are involving many specialists approached much science to
know this extraordinary phenomenon. Their results allowed after all, the development of many wellknown
and accepted in the world of programs to stimulate the development of children and young
people affected by the said disorder. The effectiveness of many methods but still not satisfied enough
to satisfy the expectations of parents and teachers. Recent years have indeed resulted in a distinct
change for the better, especially in terms of attitudes towards children with a diagnosis of autism, as
well as their parents, but it seems to be far too little compared to the needs. This changed not only the
attitude of society, but also the position of perceiving education authorities and health educational
needs of children with autism. It turns out that children with a diagnosis of autism requires not only
an adequate education, but also the systematic treatment multiprofile social support and rehabilitation
of rational interaction. Hence, this study attempted to take this topic cognitive. The author
makes an attempt to stimulate social development of children with a diagnosis of autism, the fun
with singing and music. The results confirmed the validity of the assumptions that children affected
by autism can be incorporated into a play activity. They may be interested in movement and music.
You can while having fun make contact with them. You can also without difficulty incorporate them
into a peer group, and this is their great achievement.

The article discusses speech defects and reading and writing difficulties in persons with moderate intellectual disability. The analysis of the problems is based on studies conducted by one of the authors in a seven-person group of intellectually disabled adults. The subjects were presented with three tasks. The first task evaluated the motor skills of speech organs. The objective of the second task was to assess articulation skills. For this purpose, a questionnaire to test pronunciation was used. It consisted of a hundred pictures. The names of the objects shown in the pictures enabled the investigation of articulation of all sounds in each of the possible positions in a word. The last part of the investigation (task three) was a multifaceted assessment of reading and writing difficulties. The collected empirical data also enabled the attempt to answer the question whether among the problems of mentally handicapped persons there is a relationship between articulation difficulties and mistakes appearing in reading and writing.Key words: speech defects, reading and writing difficulties, moderate intellectual disability

This case study describes an example of a rare disorder which applies to alternating facial nerve palsy in Melkersson-Rosenthal Syndrome. The first description of this case was published in 1928, when Ernst G. Melkersson observed a disease which was characterised by recurring lips edema and facial nerve palsy. Then, in 1931 Curt Rosenthal added fissured tongue to the fundamental features of the syndrome. Unsatisfactory treatment results have prompted a search for interdisciplinary rehabilitation which could improve the functioning of the patient, aesthetics of the appearance, and effectiveness of the treatment. As it turns out, the PNF method, proprioreceptive neuromuscular facilitation stretching, along with neurologopedic therapy bring the most beneficial improvement for the patients.Key words: edema, paralysis, facial nerve, fissured tongue, Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome, neurologopedic therapy, PNF metho

The Alien Hand Syndrome (AHS) is a relatively rare neurological disorder. Right side brain damages, especially right hemisphere stroke, can be a cause of AHS. Main symptoms include a feeling of alien hand, involuntary movements and personification of the limb. This syndrome usually coincides with unilateral neglect syndrome. While the body sense is impaired, the patient loses the ability to communicate and the holistic perception of the external environment. This event caused the AHS. Undoubtedly, individual therapy, consisting of physiotherapy, neuropsychologist therapy and speech therapy combined with stimulation of neuroplasticity, can improve the quality of patient’s life. This paper presents a case report of a 77-year-old patient who was hospitalized because of ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic transformation.Key words: alien hand syndrome, right hemisphere ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic transformation, AHS therapy, unilateral neglect syndrome

Opóźniony rozwój mowy i jego wpływ na rozwój dziecka. Studium przypadku chłopca z ryzykiem dysleksji
Michalczyk, Anna
Nowadays the importance of wellbeing and preventing diseases is widely recognized. People living fast paced lives are bombarded with visual stimuli, such as TV, Internet, social media, image advertisements or even emoticons on mobile phones. This is not without effect on traditional verbal communication. People spend less and less time talking to their children, which is crucial in developing communication skills; instead, they tend to spend more time watching TV or browsing the Internet. This is detrimental to the children, especially in the phrase of their language development; neglecting it can potentially create some serious problems. This article presents a case study of a boy diagnosed with the delayed speech development and potential risk of dyslexia disorder. The first part shows the standards of speech development and some disorders. The second part concerns the process of diagnosing the boy, and the third part indicates a direction for his therapy.Key words: speech development, dyslexia, delayed speech development, speech disorder therapy

Sprawność narracyjna w chorobie alkoholowej
Ciszewska-Psujek, Urszula
Narrative Abilities in Alcohol Use DisorderAlcohol dependence is a chronic disease causing multiple‑system and multiorgan damage. Toxic effects of alcohol on the central nervous system lead to a permanent decrease in the number and size of neurons and neuronal connections, especially in the frontal structures, limbic system and cerebellum, and consequently to cognitive disorders, including executive functions and memory, as well as disorders in the processing of emotional information. The resulting cognitive dysfunctions affect the way in which reality is understood and the ability to present it in linguistic behaviour. Speech disorders in alcohol addicts can be diagnosed by assessing the narrative skills that reflect human knowledge of the world, i.e. the cognitive representation of the world.Key words: alcoholism, cognitive functions, executive functions, cognitive function disorders, narration, narrative efficiency

Influence of Music and Movement Exercises on the Development of Prosodic Competences in Five‑ and Six‑year‑old ChildrenThis article presents the results of my study of the effect of music exercise and music and movement exercise on the development of prosodic competencies among five‑ and six‑year‑old children whose phonetic and phonological system is at the end of its dynamic development. This period is marked with very intensive development of the ability to perceive specific characteristics of prosodic speech units. The aim of the study was to evaluate this effect. The main objectives of conducted experiment were to examine the prosodic competences in terms of perception as well as to develop and implement a treatment program connected with shaping perception skills in terms of elements common to speech and music (such features as: height, volume, time and duration; and such phenomena as: speed, rhythm, melody, intonation), which in turn would lead to an increase in the level of prosodic competences. An experimental research method with the selection of a parallel group was applied in the experiment. The test procedure included a study on physiological hearing and an examination of the perception of prosodic speech in children from experimental and control groups.Key words: prosodic speech, prosodic competences, logorythmics, ways of improving prosody

Epilepsy in Diagnosis and Logopaedic Therapy: A Case Study
Padaczka w diagnozie i terapii logopedycznej. Studium przypadku
Panasiuk, Jolanta
Epilepsy in children leads to disorders in their psychomotor development or the loss of their acquired skills. Successful pharmacological treatment of epilepsy provides grounds for effective therapeutic measures. The goal of this article is to present the dynamics of neurodevelopmental disorders in the course of the severe symptomatic epilepsy with status epileptici which affected a 10-year-old girl. As a result of longitudinal studies, four stages were distinguished which determined the dynamics of development of the disease: 1) up to the age of 10, when the child’s psychomotor development proceeded correctly, 2) between the ages of 10 and 15, when, because of epilepsy, the disorders in the cognitive, linguistic, emotional, behavioural, motor, and vegetative spheres occurred, which assumed the form of profound dementia, 3) between the ages of 16 and 17, when the balance of the bioelectric activity of the brain was achieved owing to the optimisation of pharmacological treatment, 4) between the ages of 17 and 25, when, after the multi-specialist therapy, there was a significant improvement in the functioning of all the disordered spheres, which enabled the patient to finish junior and senior high school, apply to a university, obtain very good results in learning, and to achieve spectacular successes in sport.

The Development of Perceptual Functions as a Norm and Pathology: A Comparative Analysis
Rozwój sprawności sensorycznych w normie i zaburzeniu. Analiza porównawcza
Bigos, Kamila
A child with pervasive developmental disorder shows the disturbances in the developmental dynamics, an effect that might be strengthened if autism or intellectual disorders have been diagnosed as well. This article is an attempt to compare the condition of the perceptual functions of an eight-year-old boy who suffers from multiple developmental disorders, that is, autism and moderate intellectual disorder, to that of the developmental age of a six-year-old child. The empirical data contain numerous observations, the studies based on the self-prepared questionnaires assessing the child’s psychomotor development, and the interviews with parents, teachers, and therapists. The outcomes show the disproportion between the examined cases and indicate significant development delay of the child with autism – absent in his healthy friend – which results in the decreased participation in his environment.

Waryszak, Małgorzata
Cerebral palsy is a set of symptoms caused by the damage of the central nervous system during its development. People affected by cerebral palsy require care from a multidisciplinary team of therapists. The positive impact of the people close to a patient plays a crucial role. Since playing board games is a popular leisure activity, this article aims at encouraging people to engage a disabled person in this form of entertainment. The conclusions are based on the observations made by the author, who has worked with people affected by cerebral palsy for several years.
