The influence of reading on child’s language
The article presents an attempt to develop methods of research showing the impact of
multi-dimensional reading on the child’s language. According to the author, a multi-faceted study to
measure the impact of reading on child’s language ability and disseminate the results of such studies
should be implemented in order to promote reading effectively.
It should be pointed out that a modern man in fact pays attention on precise figures as well as quantitative
and qualitative methods. The author examined the length of child’s utterance (a number of words),
an exact number and the average number of words included in the utterance, frequency and an increase
of vocabulary, fluency (a number and types of pauses), repetition of words and phrases, a number of
words and unfinished words and a number of elements in texts for children.

Research of reading skills of the fourth grade pupils in the primary school
The authors discuss the results of research carried out to present reading skills of pupils in the primary school. Taking into account theoretical background, used to prepare the research methodology, the most significant factors contributing to the reading process are analyzed. There are two dimensions of reading skills that are involved in the research: decoding and reading comprehension of the text. The range of decoding provides the assessment of reading speed (treated as a number of words read within one minute), correctness of reading (perceived as proportion of the read word in a correct way compared to all read words per minute), and a type of mistakes made by children during reading.

Slower language development versus a risk of developmental dyslexia
The author’s research focuses on specific speech and language disorders. Then, she pays
attention to main difficulties and reasons of this phenomenon as well as relation between any developmental
disorders, in particular developmental dyslexia. The main aim of the article is to show the
research results in the area of dependency between developmental dyslexia and a low level of language
abilities. The author answers two main questions. First of all, she wants to find an answer if each child
with speech disorder is endangered with developmental dyslexia, and then, if a speed of speech development
among all children with mental deficit belonging to a dyslexia risk group is shown. The results
of the conducted research show the existing relation between children with speech disorder and a speed
of language development. What is more, the author presents a closer correlation between slower language
acquisition and dyslexia than in the opposite direction. In the case of the second group of children
it is claimed that those children who are endangered by dyslexia had some problems with language
acquisition in the past.

A speech and language therapist’s work with a patient with damaged right hemisphere
The article represents the first part of discussion about the functions of the right hemisphere
in the language processes. Before 1970s the approach stating that lingual functions are merely
connected with the left hemisphere becomes obsolete in the 21st century . Nowadays, modern psychological,
linguistic and medical research has clearly showed the relationship between lingual deficits
and the damage of the right hemisphere structures. Lingual deficits usually concern disorders such
as expression/emotion aprosody, comprehension of complex sentences, problems with semantics and
lexis, and so on. Thses patients with the damaged right hemisphere visit speech and language neurotherapists
more frequently since such therapists can minimize communication disorders caused by the
right hemisphere damage if the right treatment is applied.

Cognitive, therapeutic and educational values in A Songbook for Children [Śpiewnik
dla dzieci] by Maria Konopnicka – their importance in speech therapy
Every day a teacher, especially a speech therapist who works with the youngest children, uses a variety of texts that are helpful in improving the child language. Cognitive, therapeutic and educational values (and learning outcomes) presented in A Songbook for Children [Śpiewnik dla dzieci] by Maria Konopnicka multiply educational and therapeutic benefits, which is usually achieved by a set of repeated language and articulation exercises. It should be emphasized that the poet uses a beautiful poetic language that is tailored to the developmental needs of the child. What is more, even in the 21st century Konopnicka’s style of writing should be appreciated as it is so simple that makes a child repeat her songs easily and with pleasure. This is why, frequently repeated sequences of words may contribute to correct pronunciation.

The key question in the psycho-pedagogical rehabilitation of a child with cochlear implantation (CI) is: what point is to be considered as the “initial point” of the child’s new auditory and speech abilities. The article presents the idea of this “initial point”. The “initial point” depends on the understanding of the early hearing and speech ontogenesis. The article presents an approach to psycho-pedagogical rehabilitation of a child with CI based on the understanding of normal hearing and speech ontogenesis in the context of the development and complication of emotional interaction of the child with their parents and relatives. According to this approach, the “initial point” is considered as the launch of a new emotional dialogue with relatives on a new sensory basis. This “initial point” is common for different groups of children with CI. The exception is children who became deaf and who did not manage to retain emotional interaction with their relatives. The “initial point” in this case is the point of ontogenesis where interaction with environment on a normal sensory basis started to deteriorate.

The article presents successful and unsuccessful case stories of children after cochlear implantation. They illustrate considerable differences in the development of children with cochlear implants installed: from high development scores for the age group and the ability to attend regular school classes with hearing pears, to a significant delay not only in relation to the age group, but also in relation to deaf children of the same age who receive special education. The article shows that a failure to complete the initial stage of rehabilitation after cochlear implantation precludes further development of the child as a hearing individual and makes complete socialization impossible.

The article focuses on theoretical approaches present in the subject literature regarding the essence and efficiency conditions of communication of deaf children. The main aim of this article is to show the directions of desirable changes resulting not only from the use of selected methods, but present also in philosophical approaches to this problem. Currently, the prevailing view is that education and rehabilitation of deaf children are most effective when the communication process includes various codes, that is, not only speech, but manual codes too, such as: cued speech, dactylography, and ideographic signs of sign language.

The subcortical structures form the middle part of the central nervous system. They create systems which are some kind of basis for performing intentional tasks with the cooperation of the cortical centers. So the extrapyramidal system provides the fluid motion by the unconscious influence on the muscle tone distribution. However, the cooperation with the pyramidal system and the cerebellum is necessary for the performance of intentional tasks. The limbic system is formed by the grey matter structures which are engaged in the control of memory and learning processes. The major transmission station for the sensory information creates the thalamus which is connected with the extrapyramidal and limbic system. The organism adaptation to the changeable external conditions is provided by the hypothalamus involving many chemoreceptors of grey matter nuclei. It supplies internal balance and the equilibrium of body fluids, making use of the antagonism of the centers located there.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a risk factor of dementia. Early impairment in episodic memory is considered to be a predictor of progression to dementia. The goal of the study was to evaluate the utility of baseline cognitive testing of episodic and working memory in the risk assessment of the dementia development in MCI. We studied 55 MCI patients and 44 controls, assessed annually by a set of neuropsychological tests for four years. The Petersen criteria were used to diagnose MCI, and DSM-IV criteria were applied to diagnose dementia. Variant analysis revealed significant differences in the results of individual cognitive tests between MCI converters who developed Alzheimer’s disease (AD) at follow up, MCI non-converters, and controls (p < 0,05). At baseline, MCI converters had significant impairment in all tests comparing to MCI non-converters. APOE4 status had a significant influence on AD development in our MCI group (p = 0,0022). The study showed that significant impairment in baseline results of tests evaluating episodic (delayed recall) and working memory in MCI is a good predictor of dementia development in the future.

Speech disorders, presented in terms of theoretical models in speech-therapy literature, may manifest themselves in clinical practice as diverse spectra of symptoms, far removed from model descriptions. In many cases, the speech therapist detects coupled difficulties resulting from overlapping pathomechanisms. The high degree of complicacy of symptoms usually stems from disorders in the course of complicated illness complexes of the developmental age. To draw conclusions on the neurobiological mechanisms of speaking difficulties in the context of the still developing brain and other organic systems is a very difficult task. The article presents the specificity of childhood disintegrative disorders, which are classified as part of the spectrum of autistic disorders. With regard to the clinical picture and dynamism of symptoms, disintegrative disorders are distinguished from other comprehensive developmental disorders and require separate speech-therapy procedures. Using the case study of a 21-year-old patient, the diagnostic-therapeutic management of this disorder has been presented.

Craniosynostosis is a congenial malformation caused by premature fusion of one or more cranial sutures, leading to abnormal shape of the skull. Non-syndromic craniosynostoses can result in developmental disorders, including speech acquisition delay. The authors have carried out neurologopaedic research on a group of 124 children aged 3 to 59 months of life. In these cases, causes of speech disorders are very complex. Additional research concerning speech and language development in school age children with craniosynostoses is essential.

The need for rapid responding to stimuli, inscribed in the phylogenetic development, is associated with the germination of different systems of information processing. The condition of the maturity of central‑peripheral structures as well as it defines the level of processes of coordination developmental and processes of cultural learning. The individual (ontogenic) development of the human nervous system takes place stage by stage and this process is spread over a given time. The results provide evidence of the many‑changes in the connections of the brain as the cause of development processing disorder. Imitation is one of the major components in the development of pragmatic communication behaviour in all individuals. The ability to imitate and its possible impairment might play a significant role in diagnosing pragmatic language disorders in children of various groups with a risk of physiological speech development disorders stemming from their primary health disability, including people with autism spectrum disorders. In the process of designing and verifying a new assessment material for the evaluation of the ability to recognize pragmatic language disorders in people with autism spectrum disorders, the authors used selected items to assess the capability of motor and oral-motor imitation in children with autism spectrum disorders, specific language impairment (developmental dysphasia), mild intellectual disability, and typically developing children. The paper describes partial results of this research and discusses their potential correlations with the assessment of the pragmatic level of language in children with autism spectrum disorders from the perspective of the speech-language therapist.

Dissociation or Neurodegeneration. Problems of Diagnosis, Treatment and Therapy
Differentiation of the symptoms of dissociation and neurodegeneration in adolescent patients causes many problems. Diagnostic criteria unequivocally show that dissociative disorders should be diagnosed only after excluding general‑medical and neurological causes and the results of the effect of psychoactive substances. The diagnosis of dissociation is indicated by the occurrence of conversion symptoms or recurrent somatic complaints temporally connected with a stressogenic factor in the dynamism of their clinical picture. The aim of the paper is to determine the psychopathological picture of neurodegeneration in an 18‑year‑old female student who was erroneously diagnosed as having dissociative disorders. The results of extended genetic tests conducted after eight years of ineffective treatment and therapy showed a hereditary form of neurodegeneration. The disease, although with different intensity, also manifested itself in the patient’s grandmother, mother and in sister at different periods of their lives.

Developing Vocabulary in Pre-school Children with Impaired Verbal Expression. Theoretical Problems
The article deals with theoretical problems related to vocabulary development in preschool children with impaired verbal expression. The authoress underlines the significance of the issue, resulting from the role of vocabulary in social, educational and cultural development. She attempts to characterize language competences at the semantic and lexical levels. To this end, she refers to existing speech development studies on child’s vocabulary, then proceeds to discussing the two basic dimensions of child’s vocabulary – quantitative and qualitative – and highlights the importance of both. She places emphasis on examining the qualitative aspect. Therefore, in the light of selected linguistic theories, she examines the notions of: language sign, basic and metaphorical meanings, cognitive definition. She also refers to the concept of semantic categories and parts of speech, addresses the issues of semantic communication, pragmatics and metalinguistic reflection. The aforementioned linguistic phenomena are confronted with examples of possible disorders.

Reception of Emotions Expressed in the Prosy by Children with Damaged Hearing System
Hearing damage causes difficulties in perception not only of segmented speech components but also of suprasegmental structures. As a result, many functions performed by the prosody of speech, which are important for the understanding and interpretation of language communication, become unavailable to people with impaired hearing. The article presents the results of own research on perception of emotions encoded in the prosody of speech (happiness, sadness and anger) by children with prelingual hearing damage. The obtained results indicate that children’s ability to perceive emotions expressed prosodically is significantly reduced when compared with normal-hearing children’s. Difficulties in this respect increase proportionally to the hearing loss severity.

Support for Deaf People in Understanding Messages by Means of SignWriting
Article discusses how to facilitate communication opportunities for people with damaged auditory system. Focusing on people who use sign language as their first language, the authoress postulates they should master the Polish language at least in writing to be able to function independently in society. The research discussed here is aimed at verifying the effectiveness of support provided by means of SignWriting in understanding texts written in the Polish language system. A quasi-experimental method was applied in two groups of deaf people (the experimental and control groups), while descriptive statistics and non-parametric statistical tests were used to verify the effects. As a serious deficit of the ability to use the Polish language phonetic system in deaf people has been observed, every effort should be made to make it easier for them to acquire and use the national language. SignWriting may turn out to be a good alternative to traditional methods or an auxiliary means of teaching the Polish language to deaf people.

Examination of Alalia Prolongata – a Methodological Proposal
The issue of delayed speech development requires extensive and in-depth research. It is estimated that about 10% of children are affected by delayed speech development. It is therefore a common but still insufficiently examined and described disorder. Within the field of study connected with delayed speech development, one can distinguish a disorder known as alalia prolongata which includes cases of language development delays without concrete reasons for their incidence. The present article puts forward a methodological proposal for examining language skills of 6-year-old children with alalia prolongata against children that meet the biological standard. It presents the state of research on delayed speech development and theoretical assumptions adopted for the purpose of the research. The presented method consists in the use of our own tool for assessing the language skills of children with delayed speech development, as well as children who fall into the biological norm category. This research shall make it possible to demonstrate the depth of disproportion in the language development of children at the same age and shall allow for a full diagnosis of children with alalia prolongata.

Two-pronged Programming of Speech Therapy with the Application of AAC Methodsy
Two-pronged (simultaneous) programming of language and communication skills consists of both improving production and comprehension of speech as well as learning of the augmentative communication methods. It is an important element of speech therapy. The introduction of alternative means of communication is part of a process aimed at developing speech. It can become a unique basis for building a language in one’s mind. The article seeks to highlight the legitimacy of two-pronged programming of speech therapy. Providing children with a means of communication early enough does develop their communication and language skills.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with variable communication difficulties and disorders, mostly detected in pragmatic language abilities, sensory integration, and imitation. These components are important for a comprehensive speech-language therapy (SLT) intervention. This article describes the application of a new evaluation material for assessing imitation abilities, partial pragmatic abilities based on the recognition of graphical visual diagrams, and sensory integration in two boys with ASD (diagnosed with childhood autism in accordance with International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, WHO) with sensory integration difficulties, dyspraxia symptoms, and imitation skill disturbances. The main objective is to identify potential obstacles to SLT efficiency and the causes of disturbed pragmatic language abilities. The analysis of the case studies shows some progress in communication ability; however, some of the abilities related to sensory integration have been partially inhibited. In one case, we suggest the possible influence of the individual therapy based on the described detailed assessment.

This article is concerned with the important issue of communication between doctors and patients. A patient’s agreement to proposed therapy, his or her cooperation, and engagement in the therapeutic process to a large extent depend on the communicative skills of a doctor or therapist. This article stems from the survey carried out among the patients of the Clinical Hospital of the University Medical Centre in Gdansk, and, thereby, it attempts to evaluate the aforementioned skills.

Linguistic Disorders in Alcohol Dependence: Representation and Dynamics
Ciszewska-Psujek, Urszula
https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8487-0358
Alcohol dependence is a chronic disease which damages many systems and organs. The toxic influence of alcohol on the central nervous system leads to the durable reduction of neurons and neural connections in number and size, especially those within the frontal structures, the limbic system, and the cerebellum. These changes result in cognitive impairments, including executive cognitive impairments, memory deficits, and emotional information processing disorder. Cognitive deficits, in turn, affect the way of understanding human reality and the possibility to represent it in language. The diagnosis of speech disorders among alcohol-dependent patients can be accomplished by evaluating their narrative skills. The article contains selected narrative statements of two men maintaining short- and medium-term alcohol abstinence, and the description of the exponents of a particular attitude and neurocompensatory mechanisms.

The Quantitative Analysis of Consonant Groups in Speech Therapy Diagnosis of Articulation Disorders
Binkuńska, Ewa
https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3901-7024
In the research on children’s articulation, several types of attempts to assess the implementation of phonemes are usually taken into account. An image questionnaire is a tool allowing us to study articulation. The purpose of using this kind of aid is to either indicate or exclude a speech disorder – in this case, for example, regarding the faulty implementation of individual phonemes. The article analyses quantitatively one of the phonological aspects of the lexical content of ten selected diagnostic tests used to study the articulation of children between the ages of three and seven. The studies include the occurrence of consonant groups, the attention to the position of the appearance of consonant clusters, their number in the lexical unit, and the quantity of consonant elements adjacent to each other.
