L'écriture du terroir revisitée : La Rage de Louis Hamelin
Resch, Yannick
The article focuses on ironic references to the traditions of rural literature in Jean Hamelin’s The Rage. The author explores the concept of the “writing of excess,” and claims that whereas actual country is an evanescent category, the territory that one can possess is that of language.Key-words: Intertextuality, rural novel (roman de la terre), irony , writing of excess.

Maria Chapdelaine ou le Paradis retrouvé de Gabrielle Gourdeau - analyse de l'hypertexte
Warmuzińska-Rogóż, Joanna
The article is an attempt to classify the novel of Gabrielle Gourdeau entitled “Maria Chapdelaine ou le Paradis retrouvé”, which retells the story of the emblematic character of French-Canadian literature (formerly portrayed by Louis Hémon in his novel “Maria Chapdelaine”). With the use of the theory of “hypertext” by Gérard Genette, the author shows that Gourdeau does not merely “continue” Hémon’s narrative but re-visions and re-invents the character of Maria Chapdelaine, by means of such techniques as transposition, transtylization and transvalorization.Key-words: intertextuality; hypertext; the Maria Chapdelaine myth; continuation; transposition

Entre la parodie et l'imitation: le Don Juan de Jacques Ferron
Mercier, Andrée
The article analyzes conceptual links between the play “Le Don Juan chretien“ by Jacques Ferron and its original version by Moliere. The author shows how the myth of Don Juan as a seducer paves the way for the modification of the role of the woman, by means of redefining her social status. The assumption of the article is that Ferron’s play becomes a part of the literary tradition of Quebec, by building on its cultural and linguistic heritage.Key-words: Jacques Ferron; intertextuality; parody; imitation; the myth of Don Juan

Monique Bosco: Les Lamentations de la vieille en ce jour du Kippour
Minelle, Cristina
The article examines the ways in which Monique Bosco, in her « Les lamentations de la vieille en ce jour du Kippour », combines the main features of the lamentation - an ancient genre which was employed in the Bible - with elements typical for the short story. The clear presence of biblical roots makes the modern setting and theme of the text unusual and, not infrequently, unsettling for the reader. Key words: Short Story; Lamentations; Bible; Psalms

La réécriture du mythe d'Ulysse dans le roman migrant. Errances de Sergio Kokis
Sadkowski, Piotr
The article focuses on the analysis of Sergio Kokis’ novel “Errances” as an example of contemporary transvalorization of the myth of Odysseus. Kokis’ novel is treated as a „récit odysséen” (an „Odyssean narrative”), i.e. a type of fiction characterized by the theme of an exile’s return to the native land and the exploration of the protagonist’s narrative identity by means of metafictional devices. In the process of rewriting the Homeric epic and 20th century versions of the myth of Odysseus (Nikos Kazantzakis’ “The Odyssey: A Modern Sequel” and Joseph Conrad’s novels), Sergio Kokis deconstructs the concept of the return to the native land defined in terms of territory and ethnicity. What emerges from the novel, is a concept of the ethos of the eternal wanderer based on the shattering of the illusion of collective belonging as the source of identity.Key words: Odysseus; transvalorization; narrative identity; return

Intertextes dans Le Figuier enchanté (1992) de Marco Micone
Mouneimné-Wojtas, Tina
The article studies Marco Micone’s « Le figuier enchanté » (a novel inspired by a Quebecois classic – “Une saison dans la vie d’Emmanuel” by Marie-Claire Blais) as the author’s attempts to get closer to the Quebecois cultural heritage. Micone is an Italian-Canadian writer who became famous for his public interventions in favor of the marginalized and the oppressed (both immigrants and workers exploited by the capitalist regime). His novel is strongly impregnated with the idea of the battle for a better tomorrow which, in his view, is possible only when all the inhabitants of Quebec get to know and help each other.Key-words: Marco Micone ; « Le figuier enchanté » ; Quebec ethnic minority literature; Italian Canadian literature; immigrant writing; intertextuality; comparative perspective; engagement; polyphonic novel; « Une saison dans la vie d’Emmanuel »

Les avatars de la mère. La réécriture de soi dans le monde de Michel Tremblay
Kapołka, Karolina
Although the works of Michel Tremblay are replete with references to other authors, it is the phenomenon of autotextuality that becomes the focal point of the analysis in this article. The author of “Chroniques du Plateau Mont-Royal” and numerous plays and novels binds them all together by resorting to the recurrence of his figures. Thus, the figure of Mother, a figure grafted onto the network of Michel Tremblay’s works, undergoes a metamorphosis from boisterous and authoritarian Nana Tremblay (in the autobiographical prose and drama) to a symbol of ideal motherhood embodied by The Great Mother of Tremblay’s universe. She gives the beginning to both new life and new writing and hence she becomes her writer-son’s inspiration and creative muse.Key words: Michel Tremblay; autotextuality; metamorphoses; mother; writing

La poétique de la réécriture chez Gaston Miron
Beaudet, Marie-Andrée
Few writers have done as much rewriting as the Québécois poet Gaston Miron. The poems collected in his masterwork “L’homme rapaillé”, first published in 1970, have been subjected to a long process of rewriting from the end of the 1940’s to his death in 1996. As Miro himself claimed, the last edition of “L’homme rapaillé”, published in 1993, was “non definitive” and numerous verses were still considered unfinished (“vers en souffrance”). The article examines this peculiar poetics of rewriting in order to explain the reasons and the circumstances that kept bringing Miron back to his poems, while his work was enthusiastically received by readers and critics alike. Key words : Gaston Miron; poetry; rewriting

Quand un conte se fait roman L'Ogre de Grand Remous de Robert Lalonde
Jarosz, Krzysztof
The article concentrates on the problem of intertextuality in Robert Lalonde’s “L’Ogre de Grand Remous”, based on Charles Perrault’s fairy tale “Tom Thumb” and the motto to Jean Giono’s “Deux cavaliers de l’orage”. The author argues that Lalonde’s novel is a pretext to present the problems of modern times and cultural references to Quebecness, Americanness and Europeanness.Key-words: Robert Lalonde; Fairy-Tale; intertextuality; contemporary national identities

La réécriture des modèles français et américains dans Cadavres de François Barcelo
Sawicka, Sylwia
The article presents François Barcelo’s roman noir “Cadavres” as an attempt at deconstructing the conventions of the literary genre. The definition of a “roman noir” is twofold. On one hand it is a gritty novel narrated by the perpetrator, on the other it delineates the dark side of the society. Barcelo’s novel transgresses the traditional model of the genre by the implementation of metafiction and elements of grotesque. Barcelo creates an original Quebecois crime novel by combining these two characteristics. In order to show the maladjustment and alienation of a social group, he creates an inept villain and transforms the setting of the novel, grotesquely turning an edgy metropolis into a boring provincial town. Thus “Cadavres” goes far beyond the existing French and American models of the black novel.Key words: François Barcelo; roman noir; metafiction; break with conventions

L'amour éclaté et recomposé. Sur quelques particularités de la réécriture de Réjean Ducharme
Vurm, Petr
The article examines the problem of rewriting and intertextuality in the texts of a Québecois writer, Réjean Ducharme. The author analyses Ducharme’s recurrent topic of courtly love in relation to rewriting and intertextuality, juxtaposing the author’s literary texts and his sculptures and paintings, created under the pseudonym of Roch Plante. The text shows the similarity between Ducharme’s literary activity and his artistic collages. Both consist in permanent deconstruction/recomposition of a plethora of literary references, an inomissible element of Ducharme’s creativity.Key words: Réjean Ducharme; Roch Plante; rewriting; intertextuality; deconstruction; courtly love; surrealism

Réécriture et auto-réécriture dans Opération Rimbaud de Jacques Godbout
Figas, Ewa
The article traces rewriting and auto-rewriting strategies in Jacques Godbout’s “Operation Rimbaud” (1999), which revisits places and people from his former novel “Aquarium” (1962). The paper shows how in his latest novel Godbout returns to revolutionary Harar, Ethiopia, which Rimbaud visited, once again creating the character of a corrupted priest. Godbout rewrites Rimbaud’s biography, revising at the same time the biblical story of the Decalogue Tablets, as well as reminisces about his stay in Ethiopia.Key words: Godbout; “Operation Rimbaud”; “Aquarium”; Decalogue; rewriting; Ethiopia

L'intertexte et la délocalisation de la culture du texte dans Salut Galarneau! de Jacques Godbout
Filteau, Claude
The article is a study of intertextual strategies in Godbout’s philosophical novel “Salut Galarneau!” (1967) Claude Filteau which asserts that inter- and transtextuality belong to the democratic regime of writing. Intertextuality works primarily through literary genres. The paper concentrates on the figure of François Galarneau, the main character of the novel who, in his search for truth, is unable to overcome his own contradictions as a self-taught writer and a ‘Quebecois’ without money in a consumerist world. Through copies of letters, classified ads, cooking recipes, women’s advice columns and TV commercials the main hero relates his life story, while dreaming about being stripped off the book pages by his readers. It is Galarneau’s ‘wandering letter’, called by Jacques Ranciére the ‘orphan speech’, Key words: intertextuality; novel; philosophical tale; heteroglossia; low culture; Canadian literature

Réécritures migrantes de quelques classiques de la littérature québécoise : jalons vers un nouveau «texte national»?
Smart, Patricia
The article draws attention to the phenomenon of rewritings of works belonging to the Québécois literary canon by authors born outside the country, yet educated in Quebec. It indicates a significant contribution of immigrant writers to the breaking down of borders between canonical works and so called immigrant writing. The paper focuses on the similarities in theme, structure and imagery between Bianca Zagolin’s “Une femme à la fenêtre” and Louis Hémon’s “Maria Chapdelaine”, as well as Gabrielle Roy’s “Bonheur d’occasion” and Abla Farhoud’s “Le Bonheur a la queue glissante”. Through the penetration of the canon and “écriture migrante”, a new, ‘national text’ is born.Key words: immigration; rewriting; national text; intertextuality

Réécrire le symbolique: entre l'ironie et l'engagement politique L'Euguélionne de Louky Bersianik
Krzykawski, Michał
The analysis of irony in Louky Bersianik’s “The Euguelionne” as one of the major feminist strategies to present the voice of the ’ex-centric’ – is central in this article. The author shows that although parody is caught up in the dialectics of transgression, and thus based on the inherent presence of the parodied text, it is also involved in the oppressing discourse and thanks to its deconstructive power has the potential to de-naturalize what has never been natural. Key words: feminism; parody; irony; satire; discursive strategies; identity; phallogocentrism; deconstruction

Les passages de l'écriture
Bourneuf, Roland
This comparative essay focuses on an ancient, multi-faceted process of rewriting, that the author tries to explore through his personal experience as a writer. Bourneuf begins with by writing about his scholarly research dealing with the influence of one author on another (especially the French-Canadian poet Saint-Denys Garneau) and proceeds to raise the question whether literature is indeed a continuous process of rewriting the same stories, characters, themes and myths. As a professor of literature and a writer, the author muses over the impact that French and foreign literatures had on his own literary career as the author of essays, short stories and novels.Key words: rewriting; comparatism; essay writing; story writing; myths

Scrittura come visione
Vecce, Carlo
At the beginning of a creative process, a literary text needs always to pass the step that ancient writers called ‘inventio’. In the ‘inventio’, of course, human mind looks more for visual images than for abstract ideas. Fantasy and imagination, by this way, are non very far from the world of dreams, made basically by images and sensations. During this first step, some writers can use words and language just to ‘describe’ images and visions. Among modern italian witers, we could assume the important witness of Italo Calvino, in Lezioni americane. But other interesting examples are to be found also in texts by Iacopone da Todi, Dante, Petrarca, Leonardo da Vinci and Dino Campana. What is important (Calvino says in Lezioni americane), it is to continue to recognize to the literature a significant role in the education of imagination. Imagination is foundation to thinking, and could be menaced today by modern media-society.Key words: Italo Calvino, literature, fantasy, imagination.

Literature and Other Arts in Canada: Some Current Practices
MacDonald, Marylea
Even a cursory examination of some current practices in literature and other arts in Canada reveals that we live in a time of cross-pollination between the arts. It is not an accident that we have reached this moment. The cultural shift has been brought about by the influence of pop culture, technology in the arts and media, and computers. The practices also translate a desire to collaborate, to pool creative energy, to break out of the mold of the solitary suffering artist. Art experienced as a collective creative process has different goals from individual artistic pursuits. Communication and exchange constitute a journey towards becoming whole. I will briefly discuss modes of inspiration that generate interaction, Margaret Atwood’s exemplary history of film and stage adaptation, with a focus on The Penelopiad, some other examples of collaboration between writers and other artists, and multi-disciplinary artists.Key words: Literature, inspiration, adaptation, collaboration, multi-disciplinary artists.

L’esthétique de la lettre dans le roman et dans la peinture du XVIIIe siècle ou la représentation de la scène de lecture et d’écriture
Rabsztyn, Andrzej
One cannot question the fact that a motif of a letter occupies a very significant position in the eighteenth century French paintings and literature. Although the motif of a woman reading a letter was used much earlier by the Dutch painters such as Vermeer, there are also many eighteenth century French painters (Raoux, Fragonard, Chardin or Pierre), who show women devoted to this particular activity. Thus, the popularity of letters in literature and art results from an important role correspondence played at that time. This paper emphasizes the description of a process of writing letters by a protagonist and its further influence on the receiver’s emotional and physical state of mind and body. Letters comprise a source of pleasure for both — a writer and a reader. In painting, a letter serves as the key to the interpretation of a painting, though its content is neither revealed nor comprehensible. The way of presenting characters and space, and a central position of a letter in the considered paintings may determine the interpretation — it can be treated as a signal of a relationship between lovers or its reminiscence. Considering the intimacy of the presented scene and a confidential character of a love letter, the canvas can differently predispose the receivers and make them think about sentimental intrigues.Key words: Epistolary esthetics, reading scene, writing scene, Enlightenment’s paintings, Enlightenment’s novels.

Formes brèves avec figures de peintres
Vignes, Sylvie
If literature never could ignore visual arts, its « substantial allies » as René Char calls them, literary modernity wovens particularly close, varied and complex bonds with all kinds of picture. In this way, « couples » are often formed, for example, by a novelist and a painter (Pierre Michon and Van Gogh, François Bon and Edward Hopper, Philippe Delerm and Tiepolo…). The « substantial ally » inspires then a tale, or a sort of a literary inquiry, while other ones prefer a more brief form for this pictural theme. Now, specialists agree to emphasize that it’s a short story, Balzac’s Chef-d’œuvre inconnu, which, in France initiated, in 1831, this fertile connection between narrative fictions and visual arts. We attempted to surround this illustrious ancestor’s salient features in order to compare with it an other brief narrative fiction : Comment Wang-fô fut sauvé, a fairy tale written a century later by Marguerite Yourcenar.Key words: Balzac, Marguerite Yourcenar, narrative fictions, brief forms, shorts stories, fairy tales, visual arts.

Graceful Pre-Raphaelites and Pre-Raphaelite Grace: Victorian visual arts in Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace
Czarnowus, Anna
The visual imagery of Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace might have as one of its sources the “graceful”, hence popular, art of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Grace’s beauty veils her emotional torment in the mode similar to the comely faces of Pre-Raphaelite models: theirs are the faces disguising suffering and insanity. Moreover, during her confinement in the asylum Grace is even compared by one of the characters to the raging Ophelia, a theme recurrent in the Victorian art. In her “psychoanalytic” sessions the servant reveals her obsession with the gothic image of her dead mother drowning in the sea, metamorphosing into another woman, perhaps Mary Whitney or Nancy Montgomery. In the dream vision of doctor Simon Jordan in turn, Grace overcomes the Ophelia-like death in water and lives on despite the difficult past. Consequently, Pre-Raphaelite paintings constitute another Victorian element in the novel’s dense texture, which has already been interpreted by the critics as the one involving Dickensian orphans and Coventry Patmore’s “angels in the house”.Key words: Pre-Raphaelite visual arts, victorian sensation novel, symbolic corruption of female body, representing Ophelia, rewriting Victorianism.

Poesía visual de José Juan Tablada
Kobiela-Kwaśniewska, Marta
The present article focuses on the visual poetry of the Mexican poet José Juan Tablada who is one of the most important precursors of the avant-garde in the twentieth century. As numerous critics have remarked, José Juan Tablada made several major contributions to modern poetry in Mexico. Although Tablada is generally credited with having introduced Latin American poets to the Japanese haiku, he was also responsible for encouraging them to experiment with visual poetry. As a result of a visit to Japan in 1900, José Juan Tablada became interested in haiku tradition and in Japanese ideograms which inspirited him to create his own poetry in the style of oriental work but adopted to the Latin American perspective of his imagination and to the rules of the Spanish language. It appears that Tablada´s attention was focused mainly on the experiments of the modern French Imagist poets and was influenced by Apollinaire´s Calligrammes, a problem that we partially intend to explain in the present article spotlighting some occurrences, but finally we conclude that both poets must have been inspired by the previous form of visual poetry, known to the ancient Greeks as technopaigneia and to the Romans as carmina figurata, or by the pre-Hispanic ideographic forms; in this subject we consider a long list of possible inspirations. The principal idea of this paper is to analyse the visual poetry of Tablada from the perspective of its interdisciplinary character, where images and words situate his poems in a spatial configuration. Therefore we have concentrated our attention on two books of poems published in Caracas, the first one entitled Un día… Poemas sintéticos edited in 1919, and the second one, Li-Po y otros poemas, published in 1920, as an example of the so called visual poetry or ideographic poems, a denomination more appropriate for the second collection. To sum up, Tablada was an innovator, though he did borrow ideas like most writers do. His haikus are original, accompanied with his self-made drawings, and have a distinct Mexican flavor containing local references to flora, fauna o Mexican culture — characteristics that we underline in this paper while also providing a general overview of some theoretical aspects related to Literature and Art.Key words: Visual poetry, ideographic poems, haiku, José Juan Tablada, Mexican poetry.

Pour une théorie littéraire illustrée
Wandzioch, Magdalena
The artists and the theorists have always been fascinated by and driven to discover the relationship between arts, like painting and literature. What may come out as a surpise for those who love books, as for those who admire painting, is the illustrated theory of literature by Roger Caillois, whose background is not in literature or in painting, but in sociology. His work entitled Au coeur du fantastique published by Gallimard in 1965 and illustrated with famous paintings as well as less known ones has brought together literary criticism and painting by focusing on the theory of the genre of fantastique in literature and in painting, pointing at the similarities rather than differences. However from the 18th century, literature has beeen considered to have straight connection with time, what means being subject to chronosyntaxe (time syntax) while painting has been linked to space what signifies being subject to toposyntaxe (space syntax). The Caillois’s theory allows the public to guess what lies in the profoundity of fantastique, intangible but identified in art.Key words: Fantastique, literature, painting, Roger Caillois.

Multiperspectividad y montaje: territorio común del cine y la novela
Parrilla Sotomayor, Eduardo E.
Tracing the origins of cinematic devices of literature in the so call perceptual revolution of 1905—1915 by Donald M. Lowe, as well as in Avant Garde movements, the author of this article explores film making techniques in the work of some contemporary Spanish American novelists. Along with stream of consciousness technique and its cinematic devices examined by Robert Humphrey, the author highlights semantic, syntactic or pragmatic montage as the basic technique for cinematic effects in literature.Key words: Spanish American novelists, cinematic effects, montage.

Photographic Transgressions in Carol Shields’s “Scenes”
Szatanik, Zuzanna
The general aim of this article is to discuss ways in which an acclaimed Canadian writer, Carol Shields, employs, and simultaneously subverts, photographic metaphors in her short story titled “Scenes.” Shields skillfully arranges a series of scenes from Frances’s — the protagonist’s — past into a concise biography. Owing to their affinity to photographs, the scenes from Frances’s life might be attributed the status of objective and honest representations of reality which function as truthful evidence of what happened. Importantly, however, while Shields’s story evokes the photographic associations, it simultaneously calls in question their documentary reliability. In other words, Frances’s fragmentary biography — shown in (verbally constructed) images or flashes — undermines the concepts of both, a photograph as a documentary inscription of the truth, and language as a fitting medium of describing this truth.Key words: Photography, representation, biography, language.

Au nom de la chair : manger, regarder et lire à cru
Krzykawski, Michał
The aim of this paper is to elaborate on the fluid border that exists in French between la chair (flesh) and la viande (meat) as well as between la chair (flesh) and le corps (body). This blurry distinction spurs us to analyze the impact of the discovery of paintings in the Lascaux cave on our perception of art as connected to the realm of spirit. The uncanny character of the Lascaux cave paintings, a homage paid to animality, as well as an aspiration to the sacred, is identical with an irruption of the heterogeneous in the text. It turns art and literature into a space of excessive communication, which originates in flesh.Key words: Meat, flesh, body, steak, cannibalism, omophagy, blood, blood drinker, slaughterhouse, heterogeneity, cave.

Los jóvenes escritores hispanoamericanos : literatura y cultura de masas
Szymoniak, Ewelina
The presence of materials and structures derived from mass culture is considered one of the distinctive features for South American literature in the post period. However, while more experienced writers (that is those associated with the boom) had been clearly denoting the inferior character of mass culture in comparison to high culture (literature), this distinction started to vanish gradually over the 1990s. This paper is to demonstrate that the dexterity of young South American novelists in exploring the fast culture world (Paz Soldán) can be explained in the light of the theory of literary generations by Kazimierz Wyka. It transpires that the so-called period of rooting in society (Spranger), overlapping the 1970s and 1980s, coincided with a rapid development of mass media in South America. Being the fundamental source of mediated experiences (Giddens), mass media have become a looking glass for the perception of reality and an individual’s identity. This is reflected in the writing of young authors: in Por favor, rebobinar (1994), Alberto Fuguet represents the life of young generation Chileans connected with the mass media world, using its diverse discourses.Key words: South American literature, mass culture, young generation writers.

Videogame che legge nel pensiero
Puto, Małgorzata
Alessandro Militi, by means of his protagonist, who plays the videogame called Fuffa, presents his vision of the society overwhelmed by technological progress, and in consequences deprived of real moral values. The author presents the existing sociocultural phenomena in a very realistic-mimetic and reliable way, expressing his reluctance towards the objects suppressing human sensitivity and the need to communicate with other people not only by means of internet and mobile phone. Economic development, improving of the conditions of living, bigger selection of goods entail negative aspects. A man distances himself from spiritual values and becomes a handicapped and indifferent creature. The coexistance of the elements of virtual and real is plain and clear; a man being between these opposing poles cannot fully free himself from the artificial. The only way out from this situation appears when the game is over.Key words: Videogame, virtual, real, mimesis.

Pouvoir et magie de la comédie dans L’Illusion comique de Corneille
Pouvoir et magie de la comédie dans L’Illusion comique de Corneille
Bonolas, Philippe P.
Although Corneille drew fame from his tragedies, he launched his career by writing comedies. Considered for a long time as less worthy of attention, they have been reconsidered since the end of the nineteenth century and some of them like the Illusion comique have been regularly performed and praised as a good example of French baroque theatre. In Corneille’s time, the success of a play was due to its freshness and modernity exploiting various themes favoured by the Age of Louis XIII. A play within a play was not entirely new, but mingling the intrigue of a tragedy within a more general one of a comedy was uncommon. Introducing the role of a magician, Alcandre, able to play with the dimensions of space and time when the three rules of unity began their magisterial reign, was an audacious expression of creative liberty. Besides, Corneille epitomized the baroque metaphorical vision of the world by insisting on the aspects of its instability, putting its personages in constant psychological and physical motion and metamorphosis, situations leading at times to uncertainty about moral values. But throughout the play, the theatre appears progressively as a metaphorical rationalisation of this instability through the adventurous life of the main hero, Clindor, allowing the author through Alcandre’s voice to advocate the cathartic power of comedy and assert the social importance and legitimate place of the theatre in the 17th century France. After the Illusion comique, the theatre could clearly be perceived as a school of humanism.Key words: Corneille’s theatre, baroque, comedy, a play within a play.

L’écriture « contractuelle » du roman français à la première personne au tournant des Lumières
Rabsztyn, Andrzej
The present study argues that the French first-person novel, which came into fashion in the Enlightenment period through the adoption of epistolary, diary or memoir forms, or through their admixture in texts, lends itself particularly well to “reading pacts”. The sociopolitical context of the period favored romantic fictions of intimate literature that were attuned to the events of the day. In this paratextual discourse, novelists relied on contemporary events to initiate readers into questions such as the status and the goals of novelistic writing, while attempting to legitimize and to valorize thelatter.Key words: Epistolary novel, memoir-novel, Enlightenment period, reading pact.

Le néofantastique : un jeu avec le fantastique traditionnel ?
Gadomska, Katarzyna
The traditional fantastic literature of the nineteenth century is a genre par excellence codificated. The present study indicates how the new fantastic literature of the twentieth and the twenty-first century plays with these codes and with the customs of the traditional reader. This work discusses the literary games, very diversified, on the level of the content (the modifications of the traditional fantastic motives, for example the motif of a ghost or of a vampire) and on the level of the form (the new techniques of writing versus the traditional techniques of the literature referring to the supernatural). The present study analyses the short stories by writers writing in French, for example Rémi Karnauch, Jean-Pierre Andrevon, Stéphanie Benson, Pierre Pelot, Yves and Ada Rémy, and Jean-Pierre Bours.Key worda: Tale of twilight, the supernatural, horror, fear, ghost, vampire, game.

Comment jouer aux codes littéraires ? (À l’exemple des contes insolites français du XXe siècle)
Komandera, Aleksandra
One of the essential features of the twentieth century French uncanny tales is a play with literary conventions. According to the postmodern aesthetics, these short fictions give priority to all kinds of transgressions on the level of both the content and the form. The aim of the study is to describe the play with the literary codes on the basis of short fictions of G. Apollinaire, M. Aymé, B. Vian, P. Gripari, J. Supervielle, M. Tournier, Ph. Dumas and B. Moissard, P. Fleutiaux. The authors invite the readers to take part in the ludic activity and let the perception of the uncanny tales depend on their familiarity with the related categories of the marvellous and the fantastic, and on their knowledge of intertextuality rules.Key words: Short fiction, the uncanny, the fantastic, the marvellous, literary conventions, cultural code.

Le discours de l’ironie dans Maryse de Francine Noël
Grzybowska, Anna Maria
Maryse, a postmodern novel by Francine Noël, offers an ironic look at the baby boomers’ uncertain axiology. We focus on the multiple levels of irony inherent in the portrait of the characters of the novel. Our analysis of the ironic discourse has two interpretative components. First, we closely examine the dialogue between two characters, lovers, which reflects, as in a mise en abyme, the baby boomers’ generally accepted idea of the couple. Second, we study the ironic discourse of the couple from the social perspective, as seen through Maryse’s sentimental affair, whose personal and professional journey exemplifies the intertextual game found in other French classic novels (Marcel Proust’s À la recherche du temps perdu and Quebecois novels (Gabrielle Roy’s Bonheur d’occasion).Key words: The postmodern novel, the couple, intertextual game, the baby boom generation, the literary portrait of a protagonist, the ironic.

Comment créer une tragédie moderne de construction classique ? Jeux avec les règles
Starak, Grażyna
The output of dramatic works of Bernard-Marie Koltès in the 1970s and the 1980s shows remarkable richness of invention as far as the construction of the works is concerned. The fondness of research and experiment led the author of In the Solitude of Cotton Fields from the monologue or quasi-monologue, through sophisticated forms which resembled the eighteenth century philosophical Dialogue à la Diderot, up to the much more complex structures, such as those of Roberto Zucco. The choice of form was determined in a way, as the author maintained, by the play itself (“Chacune de mes pièces m’impose ses propres contraintes”). Interesting in that respect is the play Combat de nègre et de chiens, whose originality lies, paradoxically, in its evocation of a classical construction, with all the resulting consequences and limitations concerning the structure, time, place, the content of action, the number of characters etc. The tragedy with the classical construction became, however, a very modern play, and it was not only because of the date of its origin. It was so because of a few measures applied by Koltès. And it is the analysis of these measures, i.e. the “games” played by classical rules, which is going to be the subject matter of this article.Key words: Form, tragedy, rules, modernity, games.

Lo real y el coro: ¿parodia o juego con una convención?
Szymoniak, Ewelina
In Lo real (2001) by Belén Gopegui, a novel treating of relations between an individual and the capitalist society, a special character is revived, namely the chorus. While confronting the role it plays in the Spanish novel under analysis using the theories of the functions of the chorus as a constitutent of ancient tragedy, we answer the question whether the writer’s act of introducing this collective character to a comtemporary prose work should be treated as a parody or as playing with a commonly known literary convention, aimed to achieve specific objectives. The discussion touches on, for instance, the concept of the chorus as an interlude, a rightful participant in the plot, ethical authority, a literary “extension” of the author, an ideal reader etc.Key words: Contemporary Spanish prose, Greek tragedy, chorus, Belén Gopegui.
