Literature and traditions or on an Old-Polish wedding oratory
Literatura i obyczaje, czyli o staropolskim oratorstwie weselnym
Walińska, Marzena
The author raises the issue of a dissertation by Małgorzata Trębska devoted to Old- Polish wedding orations. The work by Trębska was recognised for its dealing with the subject that has not been discussed, the basis of which was a big source text. The author admires the results of interpretative findings which question a widely-held negative opinion among the researchers on the Sarmatian art of a Hymeneus articulation. She notices that a book should contain a variety of wedding orations in the form of appendices, and reprimands the editorial board for not having prepared the book for publication well.

Heliodor – Rubinkowski – Twardowski Three romances in the light of body and sexuality
Heliodor – Rubinkowski – Twardowski. Trzy „romanse” wobec ciała i seksualności
Słomak, Iwona
The author suspiciously analyses the work by Paweł Bohuszewicz on the Polish Baroque romance. She brings the narratological method closer, yet presents a series of doubts and objections against the means of using „fashionable” contemporary humanist works in the work in question. References to Baudrillard’s conception seem unconvincing. Equally unsuccessful was the usage of Foucault’s knowledge about body in Baroque works since their main qualities are more accurately defined by the context of Ignatian or Teresian corporality. One should also question the genological findings achieved by Bohuszewicz, whose conception of literary genres is a combination of old arrangements with too modern ideas, as a result of which still binding conceptions by Opacki and others were not taken into consideration.

A dialogue about Ciała Sienkiewicza
Dwugłos o "Ciałach" Sienkiewicza
Kosowska, Ewa
Mokranowska, Zdzisława
The authors make an attempt at a multidimensional description of Ciała Sienkiewicza. Studia o płci i przemocy by Ryszard Koziołek. Above all, they point to cognitive values of the description perspective of the works by the author of Trilogy approved of by the researcher, which definitely diverges from the already-known methodologically traditionalistic achievements connected with Sienkiewiczology. The work by Koziołek gains recognition for being homogeneous in terms of research methods, interpretatively inventive and in the form of a fantastic academic lecture.

An identity narration in the state of permanent agony
Narracja tożsamościowa w stanie permanentnej agonii
Trzebuniak, Arkadiusz
The author discusses the work by Przemysław Rojek devoted to the identity narration in the post-war poetry by Aleksander Wat. He describes this interpretative project, highlighting a combination of researcher’s historio-literary and theoretical knowledge who is interested in modern subjectivity of the textual Wat. Rojek builds in his book a wellevaluated construction of a literary auto-bio/bibliography and finds its traces in works by the author of Ciemne świecidło. Wat was trying to rebel against the fragmentarity of life and existence of a modern individual and create a coherent identity project. The very rebellion resulted in failure and destruction of all more long-lasting identity constructs. The author highly evaluates Rojek’s academic achievements who added something new to a well-developing Watology in recent years.

Reading as conversation
Czytanie jako rozmowa
Olejniczak, Józef
The author criticizes the latest book by Michał Paweł Markowski Życie na miarę literatury. He evaluated it as a book positively differing from early works by an outstanding philologist which resembled a lecture artificialized because of the fact that they were „promotion works”. The latest book enchants with sincerity in presenting his own involvement in reading adventures. Apart from discussing the history of the European modernism and a series of profiles of modern authors, the title text-confession-manifesto appears in which the philologist states that reading has an existential dimension for him as it interrupts the circle of loneliness surrounding the reader. The author notices that reading equals conversation for Markowski, which gets a former deconstructionist to hermeneutics as well as philosophy of dialogue closer.

Useful reading
Lektury pożyteczne
Dziadek, Adam
The author refers to a noble tradition of speech which has been rarely dealt with recently, namely a critical review of the latest books in the market of humanist books abroad (in France to be more specific). He pays attention to 5 books, the first of which is a work by Arambourou-Mélčse devoted to a psychoanalysis in the context of the person of Don Juan. The author of the book polemicizes with Freud’s thought and concludes that it is a debt, not guilt that is a decisive factor in social relationships. Two manualpopularising books that were discussed further show an accessible and full of innovative ideas lecture of de Saussure’s and Habermas’ thought. Especially recognized is the book by Alain Badiou, already-acknowledged in Poland, devoted to the 20th century. He presents various ways of thinking about this century, even provokingly asks about the Nazist thought only to claim in the end that it was a century in which neither a former religious order nor a newer humanist order survived the test of the history. Finally, in final, the author points to a clever work by de Saint-Victor containing a defense of the lower middle class. The character, condemned by everyone, is perceived as a hidden identity of the majority of people reading this book.

The author of the article discusses Feministyczna krytyka literacka by K. Kłosińska. The reviewer reconstructs the most important difficulties and methodological solutions to be found in the book, points to selected, though essential for considerations of the Silesian researcher, conceptions of the feminist text/reading, and formulates questions concerning the relations between feminist criticism and social theories of the literature.

Aleksander Nawarecki investigates the life space of Upper Silesia: starting from the objects of everyday use to poetic texts in a micrologic way. The main figure of Nawarecki’s Silesian phenomenology is “lajerman”, that is, a lyrist because Upper Silesia in essays written by the author of Lajerman, equals music and a beautiful effort of life affirmation.

Hors Walden Une monographie hostile [concerne T. Sławek: Ujmować. Henry David Thoreau i wspólnota świata]
Poza Walden. Monografia nieprzyjazna
Bogalecki, Piotr
Starting from Thoreau’s division into knowledge understood as a dictionary and biography, a discussion of a book Ujmować. Henry David Thoreau i wspólnota świata by Tadeusz Sławek places it in the context of deconstruction and a poststructuralist turn of the theory. At the same time, however, it shows that Sławek’s easily-recognizable and consistent style is not a result of a simple recapturing of categories worked out by J. Derrida (e.g. a margin, a responsible answer, a varying repetition, and, above all, friendship), but their far-reaching interpretation, as a result of which they take on a new community-creative character, going beyond a deconstructivist self-referentiality and the so called ethic criticism inscribing into the current.

Bolesna utrata własnej mitologii. Jeszcze o "Niesamowitej Słowiańszczyźnie" profesor Marii Janion

The book, conceived of as a shock, unrest and provocation will certainly not cause an intellectual earthquake. Only one sentence will be remembered: “Yes to Europe, but together with our dead people” instead of a more serious wondering, a no-nonsense discussion, a breakthrough in our self-perception, our history, instead of thinking about a painful loss of our own mythology, instead of making conclusions from the neighbourhood and an “inappropriate” (or irreversible) baptism.

Świadome życie gorszycielki

The book by Agata Zawiszewska, a researcher from Szczecin, fully devoted to the columnist-writing of Irena Krzywicka, a well-known inter-war writer and activist, is a perfect compendium of knowledge about the changes of traditions of the Second Republic of Poland. The author of a thick book concentrates above all on a discontinued Polish feminist thought, and places Krzywicka’s works on a map of female writing. Życie świadome. O nowoczesnej prozie intelektualnej Ireny Krzywickiej is a large-scale project worthy of a feminist conception of ginocriticism, the nature of which is above all the woman, her works, action and life conscious of the inter-war period.

A marine bigos [on A. Ubertowski: Trans-Syberia]
Morski bigos
Folta-Rusin, Anna Kazimiera
The elements of the world contrasted in a novel by Ubertowski do not wonder at each other for the first time, making a surprisingly coherent composition, from which a story about an everyman entangled in the history emerges. It turns out that a talking stork, Mołotow, a pig walking on the beach and Trocki have a lot in common… Bigos, a composition made of leftovers, makes an unusually sublime and harmonious dish after all.

From criticism of certain interpretations [on I. Karpowicz: Balladyny i romanse]
Z krytyki pewnych interpretacji
Słomak, Iwona
The centre of attention of the author’s review of Balladyny i romanse is a narrative strategy, the main feature of which is avoiding the effect of subordination of any sending authority. Karpowicz, by means of numerous parables, presents a series of opinions on the collapse of the modern culture functioning within the frame of today’s discourse, and, at the same time, introduces the tools allowing for a critical reception of the very points of view to the text. In effect, the novel combines the values of an interesting plot and a philosophical-sociological study, which proves its high quality, an ironically oriented metaprose.

A regional atlas of women
Regionalny atlas kobiet
Szopa, Katarzyna
Wielkopolski alfabet pisarek, the first literary alphabet in Poland devoted to female writing, consists of forty-nine profiles of women authors creating and living in different periods, from the medieval to modern times. A conceptual idea of female authors-editors, namely Ewa Kraskowska and Lucyna Marzec, realizes a feminist idea of locality, in this case, Great Polishness, that is becoming a place of radical opening, but also a dividing line for female writing. A literary image of the region, derived from Wielkopolski alfabet pisarek, show the space of dynamic variety that is not and should not be a destination place of all considerations, but just their beginning.

Queer dilemmas

Glosowitz, Monika
The text treats about dilemmas of queer studies within which such individual projects as the queer movement timing at deessentialization of the category of identity and LGTB realizing emancipation strategy are enclosed. Eventually, it turns out that their mutual dialogue leads to precious socio-cultural diagnoses.

Literary studies on the space of Polish literature
Literackie studia nad przestrzenią literatury polskiej
Duda, Maciej
The article contains a discussion of the volume Od poetyki przestrzeni do geopoetyki, edited by Elżbieta Konończuk and Elżbieta Sidoruk. The publication is a result of the conference organised by the Department of Theory and Anthropology of Literature at the Institute of Polish Philology of University of Bialystok that took place in 2011 under the slogan of the space as the category of poetics. Interests in spacious problems and considerations on the meeting of the theory of literature and geography, geopoetics, geocriticism, as well as humanistic and cultural geography were divided into four interesting parts, containing nineteen theoretical-literary and interpretative texts, them each time being a full-dimensional case study of the category of space in the material under investigation. Accordingly, in the beginning, the reader is introduced into what is common for the literature and geography, next he / she gives his / her attention to the space and metaphor to get to know the studies concerning the space in prose and poetical creations of the space later on. The very monograph, though, is not a theoretical outline of categories connected with geopoetics. Instead, it becomes the examination of methods and practices deriving from the latter one.

The text is a discussion of two publications: Max Herrmann-Neiße: Czas pośredni. 68 wierszy i 2 fragmenty prozy w 70. rocznicę śmierci (selection, translation and introduction by Beata Giblak and Wojciech Kunicki. Wrocław–Dresden: Neisse Verlag, 2012, 300 p.) and Auch in Neisse im Exil. Max Herrmann-Neiße. Leben, Werk und Wirkung (1886–1941) (published by Beata Giblak and Wojciech Kunicki. Leipzig: Leipziger Universitätsverlag, 2012, 541 p.). Max Herrmann-Neiße’s writing, though unknown for many years, has been translated into Polish and a has resulted in a monograph. The Upper-Silesian author, writing in German, as it turns out, is a universal word artist, an important figure in the German culture of the 1920s.

Where can one poem by a Baroque poet lead us to?
Dokąd może zaprowadzić jeden wiersz barokowego poety?
Jarczykowa, Mariola
The review underlines the cognitive and aesthetic values of Małe folio (historia jednego wiersza), a book by Mrowcewicz who interprets the poem Na oczy królewny angielskiej, która była za Fryderykiem, falcgrafem reńskim, obranym królem czeskim by Daniel Naborowski in many ways. The researcher contrasted the poem by a Polish poet with the French original by Honorat de Porcheres Laugier, pointed to significant differences between the texts, and derived European contexts from both works. Bringing the characters of the poem closer, Mrowcewicz used unpublished sources, and successfully chose illustrations presenting the people and events in question. The review paid attention to archive records concerning the English princess to be found in Radziwiłł’s property that Mrowcewicz did not use. The author of Małe folio, in his essayistic form, offers readers interesting research hypotheses concerning Naborowski’s contacts with Shakespeare, a magic garden of the Brotherhood of Rose’s Knight in Heidelberg, as well as Radziwiłł’s connections with European courts, which has not been the subject of academic reflections so far, and constitutes a great value of the publication.

Is a non-melancholic poetry possible at all?
Czyż może istnieć poezja niemelancholijna?
Hoffmann, Krzysztof
The text is a review of Melancholia w poezji polskiej po 1989 roku, a book by Alina Świeściak (Kraków: Universitas, 2011). Hoffmann positions the work in the broader panorama of Polish humanistic studies on melancholy which intensified around the turn of the century and are still relevant today. For Świeściak melancholy is not only an array of meanings surrounding a gap, emptiness and mortality in contemporary poetry (among others by Różewicz, Krynicki, Dycki, Kielar, Sosnowski), but it is also a figure that enables reflection on the notions of corporality or sight. The review makes an attempt to reconstruct these key concepts and to inquire about the limits of the notion of melancholy and questions the book's silence of Marcin Świetlicki's poetry.

A Silesian region
Śląska okolica
Rosiński, Cezary
Zapisywanie miejsca. Szkice o Śląsku w literaturze przełomu wieków XX i XXI by Elżbieta Dutka is a virgin work devoted to the relationship between a human being and a concrete and real space, it being Silesia. The author focuses on topographies – various ways of inscribing places into the culture, while the place may mean here a concrete localization, phantasmagory, a private homeland or even an internal conception of the author. The researcher is interested in a spacious dimension of human experiences, yet she does not aim at a synthesis of the phenomena observed, but stops at an overview of Silesia in various fields of art and the analysis as well as interpretation of selected works. She bases her discussions on theoretical assumptions by Martin Heidegger, Hanna Buczyńska-Garewicz and Tadeusz Sławek. At the same time, she looks for values that are universal and global in localness, which is not necessarily translatable.

Described, remembered

Wycykał, Monika
The review discusses the latest book by Sławomir Buryła entitled Tematy (nie)opisane. Three essays in which the author deals with the issues that are absent or misrepresented in literary studies devoted to the Holocaust constitute the very article. Buryła makes a difficult attempt to consider how the Polish literature comes to terms with painful topics such as looting, informing, and a moral evaluation of Hitlerites. Making use of a rich written material, the author shows how many areas are still under-read despite a peculiar “overproduction” of texts on Shoah. Books commented on by Buryła allowed him to show numerous tensions, worries and the lack of homogeneity when going through one of the most traumatic experiences in the history of mankind. The book seems to be even more important because it inscribes itself into the trend of the current social and political life where it is more and more difficult to experience the basic value of the humanities such as understanding other people and their suffering.

A review of Zofia Nałkowska’s biography, entitled Nałkowska albo życie pisane reflects the appreciation of a majestic work done by Hanna Kirchner. It is worth emphasizing the vividness of the person being analysed and appreciating the richness of meanings to be found in her works. What comes first in the biography reviewed is a parallel analysis of Nałkowska’s writing achievements and life experiences made by Kirchner. The review pointed to the contemporary nature of the opinions made by the writer in question, and erudition represented by the author of her biography.

Hollow Basso of Experience
Głuche basso doświadczenia
Kłosiński, Krzysztof
The review is a polemic with the scrutiny of a Positivist paradigm by Marian Płachecki in his Wojny domowe. Szkice z antropologii słowa publicznego w dobie zaborów (1800– 1880). Płachecki states that there was no Positivism. Krzysztof Kłosiński is critical towards this thesis, pointing to a crucial error by the monograph author – using experience as a substitute for “what any given civilization thinks and how it works”, something that has been laboriously and successfully established by researchers building the “paradigm of Polish Positivism after the January Uprising”.

Translation in a Poet’s Work
Przekład w dziele poety
Zaleski, Marek
In the review of a book Goliwość tłumacza. Przekład poetycki w twórczości Czesława Miłosza (Kraków, 2013) by Magda Heydel, the author finds an example of great application of the latest in translation studies theories. Miłosz’s translator activity turned out to be a very graceful subject for deliberation, since the poet as a translator did not see his role as a neutral intermediary, but rather executed his own literary project – an idea of a modern silva rerum, crossing genre, stylistic, and cultural boundaries.

In Defense of a “Lost” Logos
W obronie „utraconego” logosu
Uniłowski, Krzysztof
In the review of a book Mesjański logos Europy. Mariana Zdziechowskiego i Stanisława Brzozowskiego dyskursy o kulturze Zachodu (Częstochowa, 2012) by Artur Żywiołek, the author presents the monograph as a dissertation in the trend of post-secular thought. The idea of messianism is crucial here (in connection with essayist works of Marian Zdziechowski), as well as the “messianic” category, used to describe texts by Stanisław Brzozowski. In the case of Brzozowski, “messianism” does not describe an idea stance, but turns out to be a mood of critical thought, aimed at overcoming modernity. The author believes that introducing the messianic category is the monograph’s advantage, but also points to paradoxes in the attitude of Artur Żywiołek, who clearly favored these intellectual pursuits within a widely understood modernity, which revalued the community category, the sense-making logos, and sought a way to metaphysically establish the historical experience.

The Metaphor of Late Rome
Metafora późnego Rzymu
Stabryła, Stanisław
According to the author of the review of a book by Jacek Hajduk entitled Parnicki, Malewska i długie trwanie (Kraków, 2014), the book successfully presented the transformations of the metaphor of “dawn and fall of Rome” in Polish historical prose of the 20th century. These transformations have undermined the hitherto functioning cultural myth on the downfall of a corrupt pagan civilization, replaced by a new, Christian civilization. In the novel Przemija postać świata, Hanna Malewska rehabilitated the “last Romans” (bestowing on them political qualities), and Teodor Parnicki has worked out a formula for a novelized study of a historical moment, understood as a dynamic, open set of circumstances.

Tolkien’s Long Shadow
Długi cień Tolkiena
Gołuński, Mirosław
In the review of the book W cieniu białego drzewa. Powieść fantasy w XX wieku by Tomasz Z. Majkowski, the author argues its theses, indicating at significant shortcomings of the publication. At the same time, he presents his own ideas on fantasy convention research. He points to important categories of research of novels written in this style, not included by Majkowski: the relation to mythologies and the necessity of utilizing the history of ideas, should one want to create its historical and literary compendium.

The Clerkishness Reloaded
Klerkizm – reaktywacja
Rusinek, Wojciech
The review of The Clerkishness Reloaded is devoted to two literary criticism books by Dariusz Nowacki. His two publications: Kto im dał skrzydła. Uwagi o prozie, dramacie i krytyce (2001–2010) and Ukosem. Szkice o prozie are – according to the author – examples of writing entering the “clerkish critique” tradition. In Nowacki’s critical discourse, it is noticeable that the author distances himself from thematically and politically oriented discourses of popular criticism, present in mainstream media, but also from domineering languages of academic literary writing, based on fashionable philosophical or anthropological theories. Nowacki delineates the field of autonomic reading, the possibility of which is usually questioned on the basis of reading theory. The author of the review also emphasizes the stylistic specificity of Nowacki’s writing, pointing to a vital role of irony in designating the critic’s sphere of intellectual independence, as well as the particularly underlined expressiveness of analyses presented in the books in question. The latter make Nowacki’s writings original and important in the environment of contemporary literary life.

Roots, or Bittersweet Spices of the “New Regionalism”
Korzenie albo słodko-gorzkie przyprawy „nowego regionalizmu”
Szkaradnik, Katarzyna
The review is an evaluation of a post-conference tome Nowy regionalizm w badaniach literackich. Badawczy rekonesans i zarys perspektyw, edited by Małgorzata Mikołajczak and Elżbieta Rybicka. The author focuses on theoretical propositions included in the book, situating them in the context of a topographical shift and a revival of interest in regional literature, which cannot be reduced to notions of “small homeland” or “spice literature”. She discusses strategies and interpretations presented in the articles, chiefly devoted to literature on cross-border areas: Western Lands, Podlasie, and Upper Silesia. In the review, the author agrees with the point on the importance of discovering non-canonical literature and the potential of critical “peripheral” writing, but doubts are also expressed, since the status of the new regionalism is in itself problematic.

The work is a discussion of the book It Didn’t Start with You: How Inherited Family Trauma Shapes Who We Are and How to End the Cycle by Mark Wolynn, an American psychologist who deals with the therapy of inherited trauma. The author presents Wolynn’s basic assumptions regarding trauma and post-trauma and its therapeutic system and she emphasizes the popularizing aspect of the work. Afterwards, she indicates the possibilities and directions of interpretation given by Wolynn’s theory in the context of contemporary Polish prose that regards war traumas and is written by the so-called second generation.

The article is a discussion of the work of Joanna Grądziel-Wójcik: Zmysł formy. Sytuacje, przypadki, interpretacje polskiej poezji XX wieku. The author combines many research perspectives, which results in many revealing insights regarding Polish poetry of the 20th century. They are derived from a careful analysis of poetic statements placed in a wide field of historical, social and metaphysical problems. The author of the review pays particular attention to Joanna Grądziel-Wójcik’s style and to her sensitivity to semantic and figural strategies, whose interpretation leads to surprising historical and literary conclusions.

Czy inna męskość jest możliwa? [rec. Wojciech Śmieja: Hegemonia i trauma. Literatura wobec dominujących fikcji męskości. Warszawa: Wydawnictwo IBL PAN, 2016, ss. 404.]
Zając, Jan
The article is a discussion of the book by Wojciech Śmieja entitled: Hegemonia i trauma. Literatura wobec dominujących fikcji męskości. The author of the article concentrates on highlighting the importance of the Silesian scholar’s publication for Polish studies on masculinity. He describes the historical and theoretical literary framework of the presented work, paying attention to the rich exemplification of the analyzed issues. He also undertakes a discussion with some theoretical assumptions of the book, especially in the context of the implications of Kaja Silverman’s model and draws attention to some of the interpretation problems associated with the use of this theoretical approach. The author, thus, proposes an outline of alternative ways of reading the texts of Jacek Podsiadło and Szczepan Twardoch, pointing to the possibility of shifting the focus from Silverman’s approach of masochism to the issue of specificallyunderstood individuation as the possibility of a different interpretation of the male position – an interpretation which contests the patriarchal social order.

Zdobyć awangardę [rec. Aleksander Wójtowicz: Nowa Sztuka. Początki (i końce). Kraków: Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego, 2017, ss. 280.]
Baron-Milian, Marta
The text discusses the most important theses of Aleksander Wójtowicz’s study devoted to the circles of New Art and it subjects them to critical reading. The author focuses primarily on confrontation of various narrative lines, which we encounter outside the mainstream research on the interwar avant-garde. What seems especially interesting is how Wójtowicz captures the history of the literary experiment as a space of oppression and exclusion, and above all, the struggle for discursive domination, in which gradually New Art was superseded by the avant-garde.

The author in her review focuses mainly on the part devoted to the subculture, the elaboration of which raises the greatest doubts.

How Much of Genet in Gombrowicz? [re: P.S. Rosół: Genet Gombrowicza]
Ile Geneta w Gombrowiczu? [rec. Piotr Seweryn Rosół: Genet Gombrowicza. Historia miłosna. Gdańsk: Fundacja Terytoria Książki – Słowo/Obraz Terytoria, 2016, ss. 458.]
Śmieja, Wojciech
The review sums up Piotr Seweryn Rosół’s book devoted to the relation between Witold Gombrowicz and Jean Genet. Despite his critical overtone, the author does not explicitly assess Rosół’s book. He argues with the general idea but notices ambitious intentions and interesting interpretations, which prevents him from rejecting the book as such. On the one hand, Rosół’s work bears the hallmarks of Gombrowicz studies truisms, and on the other hand, it renews some interpretations as it suggests that Gombrowicz uses Genet to “outline” the shape of generally avoided issue of homosexuality. Rosół’s book proves that certain way of critical reading of Gombrowicz is no longer valuable and although he attempts to transgress the traditional critical approach, he does it inconsistently.

Skurtys, Jakub
The author reviews Piotr Bogalecki’s book which attempts to reinterpret Polish poetry after 1968 in the light of the postsecular turn. He discusses Bogalecki’s work within the broad philosophical context in order to place Bogalecki’s ideas among other quasi-religious and crypto-theological projects – especially those of Agata Bielik-Robson. The author underlines novelty of Bogalecki’s interpretations, his erudition and fundamental faithfulness toward literature and poetry which leads to depoliticization of postsecular thought making it innocuous mean of intervention.

A Forfeit from the Highest [re: P. Mackiewicz: Sequel. O poezji Marcina Sendeckiego]
Fant z wysokości [rec. Paweł Mackiewicz: Sequel. O poezji Marcina Sendeckiego. Poznań: WBPiCAK, 2015, ss. 178.]
Kujawa, Dawid
In the review I discuss Paweł Mackiewicz’s book paying special attention to his methodological choices and their consequences. I argue that traditional philological methods are insufficient to present the innovative and experimental character of Sendecki’s poetry. Mackiewicz is rightly sceptical toward deconstructive interpretations but he does not transform ideas proposed by “deconstructive reviewers” and returns to interpretation rooted in representationalism. I argue that it is necessary to elaborate on such an interpretative method that would not petrify the poem and – at the same time – would capture something beside conclusions concerning the crisis of representation. I underline the value of relational reading where the level of representation equals the level of material dimension of the poem, thus subordinating interpretation to the regime of immanence. In this case, the “meaning” of a poem ceases to be more important than its “existence”, and both modes become dynamic as they reveal inevitable involvement of literature in social relations.

The Men with the Pink Triangle shows that sexuality is an indispensable ingredient of power. Heinz Heger’s narrative gives an opportunity to depict the relation between masters and subordinates which still contributes to social identities formation. Moreover, Heger’s memories above all else enable us to recognize still valid, and getting stronger, homophobic strategies stemming not only from actions but also from language known as hate speech. Additionally, Heinz Heger’s book confirms the necessity of rereading holocaust literature within new interpretative paradigm.

Pociąg do życia Pilchowego [rec. Katarzyna Kubisiowska: Pilch w sensie ścisłym. Kraków: Wydawnictwo Znak, 2016, ss. 480.]

The biography became a controversial book before it even began to appear in bookshops. The review, thus, discusses not only its content, composition and inconsistencies but also potential reasons for the negative response of the protagonist and some of his family. As it turns out, Katarzyna Kubisiowska’s book arouses controversies for several reasons: firstly, it seems to be written mainly to meet the market needs, and secondly, it concerns a person who is close to the author. Above all, however, the book shows the protagonist in a bed light without giving him an opportunity to speak for himself, which is even more poignant in the case of a writer who hides behind the masks of literature.

The classic study of the German social anthropologist is discussed in the context of different trends in “masculinity studies”. The reviewer demonstrates that “male fantasies,” analysed by Theweleit, are not solely a historical phenomenon, but nowadays – in a slightly modified form – can urge young men to (often dangerous) actions. Moreover, Theweleit’s book is also worth reading because throughout almost the whole previous century the Polish variant of masculinity has been referring to the hegemonic German masculinity as its antithesis.

On Słowacki in a Postmodern Fashion [re: M. Troszyński: Słowacki. Poza kanonem]

Piechota, Marek
The title of Marek Troszyński’s book Słowacki. Poza kanonem is excellent from the perspective of marketing, but at the same time, it succeeds in conveying thecontent of the 11 chapters of different length, supplemented with 8 interesting appendices and 65 aptly selected and described illustrations. In a way, it has a character of sylwa; its previous versions (published in refereed magazines and collective monographs) became considerably re‑edited in order to achieve the result in the form of monography. I accept the opening form of this dissertation, which is proposed by the author, as well as his affirmative attitude to the poet’s quasi‑literary achievements, which makes the author “a friendly witness” of Słowacki’s biography and writing. The work is undoubtedly original, own, exceptional and quite unique. I do not expect that in the foreseeable future we will encounter any gifted follower of the method, inquisitiveness, a highly interesting narration, and at the same time a lucky discoverer of so many philological findings, offering such a great number of the conjectures of the poems, not necessarily canonical ones, however, coming after the “canonical”, because critical, edition of Juliusz Kleiner.

The texts included in the volume deal with the issues concerning the creation and circulation of literary works in the Polish People’s Republic. The elements of a literary career, such as recognition of an author, his or her descent or pro‑state activity, are the subject of study. The authors persuade that the social position of a writer did not always correspond with the artistic value of his or her work and that it is possible to reconstruct the transformations of the cultural politics in the Polish People’s Republic on the basis of the examination of the fate of the books handed in for evaluation to the office of censorship. The analysis of the specific careers proves the thesis that literature in the communist system could not be situated outside the cultural context and the external factors had a significant impact on the final form of the work.

To Make It Clear [re: K. Siwczyk: Jasnopis]
Żeby było jasne [rec. Krzysztof Siwczyk: Jasnopis. Kraków: Wydawnictwo a5, 2016, ss. 74.]
Piotrowska-Grot, Magdalena
The presented review concerns Krzysztof Siwczyk’s latest book of poetry. Jasnopis, published under the imprint of a5 publisher in 2016, refers to the subject matter that the poet has dealt with so far; however, clothing it a new, lighter, less complicated dress; following the current trends and at the same time resigning from all extravagance. The unpredictable world was closed in a quite predictable and tamed form. Yet, the present review focuses not only on the issues raised by the poems included in the volume, but also on the analysis of the poetic mechanisms employed by the author, the examination of the dialogue which Siwczyk establishes with other contemporary writers. Moreover, the reviewer attempts to situate the latest collection of the Silesian writer on the map of his previous poetic works.

A review of Adam Dziadek’s Projekt krytyki somatycznej (2014) [Plan for a Somatic Criricism]. The author emphasises originality of Dziadek’s conception, which combines certain structuralist and poststructuralist elements. As a result, Dziadek describes the text of a body: its manifestations or traces in the matter of language (above all, rhythm); at the same time he is interested in the body of a text: a mechanism of reading which transcends the aesthetic norm.

The review of Józef Maria Ruszar’s book Słońce republiki. Cywilizacja rzymska w twórczości Zbigniewa Herberta (2014) [Sun of the republic. Roman civilisation in Zbigniew Herbert’s work]. The author of the review emphasises that Ruszar convincingly inscribed Herbert’s fascination with antiquity (especially Roman antiquity) in the whole historiosophical reflection of the poet. The conviction about the progressive disintegration of the structures of civilization and society was closely related in Herbert’s writing with the sustained defence of Roman virtus. However, the thesis that in his poetic work Herbert was disputing with the programme and ideology of the literary modernism is perceived by the reviewer as questionable.

The review offers a presentation of Marta Flakowicz-Szczyrba’s book Dowód na istnienie. Poezja Julii Hartwig wobec egzystencji i sztuki [A Proof of Existence. Julia Hartwig’s Poetry on Existence and Art], where the lyric oeuvre of the famous poet is placed within the „poetry of metaphysical question.” A particular attention is given to a hermeneutic way of reading the works of the author of Zobaczone [Seen] and to the use of such categories as epiphany, empathy, ekphrasis, apocatastasis in the course of the analysis.

On the Side of Life, Against Melancholy [re: Marek Bieńczyk: Jabłko Olgi, stopy Dawida. Warszawa: Wielka Litera, 2015, ss. 382.]
Po stronie życia, przeciw melancholii [rec. Marek Bieńczyk: Jabłko Olgi, stopy Dawida. Warszawa: Wielka Litera, 2015, ss. 382.]
Rusinek, Michał
The subject of Wojciech Rusinek’s review is Marek Bieńczyk’s collection of essays Jabłko Olgi, stopy Dawida [Olga’s Apple, David’s Feet]. The author begins his reading of the book by placing it in the context of Bieńczyk’s earlier achievements: both artistic (novels, literary essays) and academic (bearing witness to his studies on Romanticism). While noting that Bieńczyk’s essays are governed by a wealth and a surprising variety of the explored themes, Rusinek emphasises, however, the worldview coherence of the volume. According to the author of the review, a key to the interpretation of all the essays in the book is “the praise of the taste of life,” which makes a new tone in Bieńczyk’s writing, so far associated mainly with the reflection on melancholy and melancholy discourse present in his artistic prose. In the following part of the review, by outlining the content of the essays devoted to Proust’s and Nerval’s prose,Hopper’s painting or Sempé’s drawings, Rusinek analyses the anthropological figures around which Bieńczyk’s digressive and slow reflection revolves: gesture, light, escape, frozen time. The reading of Bieńczyk’s work becomes enriched with an analysis of style (a role of stylization). Moreover, the review points out those fragments of Jabłko Olgi, stopy Dawida where a description of artistic works becomes smoothly linked with the elements of the author’s biography. In the conclusion of the reflection upon Bieńczyk’s essays, the author states that the essays clearly lean towards poetics of epiphany, which, in the view of the author of Jabłko Olgi…, would mean an unclear, veiled by an infinite number of borrowings, allegories, allusions and stylizations, suspending the flow of time, experience of existence in its inexpressible fullness.

Wieloryby i ćmy Are Not So Dreadful (as They Are Painted) [re: Szczepan Twardoch: Wieloryby i ćmy. Dzienniki 2007–2015. Kraków: Wydawnictwo Literackie 2015, ss. 276.]

Mikołajec, Marek
The author of the article, inspired by Dariusz Nowacki’s review, proposes a thesis opposite to that of the famous critic, who calls Szczepan Twardoch’s and Jacek Dehnel’s diaries “a show-off of avatars.” In defence of Twardoch’s book, Wieloryby i ćmy [Whales and moths] the author decides to concentrate on its ideological and literary values. Most importantly, he strives to prove that the diaries constitute an original and innovative attempt at developing a genre of intimate diaries and have a multifaceted interpretive potential. The author of Morfina [Morphine] expresses in his diaries a desire for “directing a great life,” understood as a consistent creation of literary works as well as a life imitating literature. The analyses and commentaries included in the article focus on the oppositions and hypostases found in the text, for example, of the world and provincial, history and life, literature and nothingness, settlement and foreignness, life and death, presence and absence, life according to spirit and life according to body, responsibility and its lack.

A new book about previous angels [re: Dariusz Dybek: Anioł w piśmiennictwie polskim XVII i XVIII wieku. Wrocław: Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego, 2012, ss. 260.]
Nowa książka o dawnych aniołach [rec. Dariusz Dybek: Anioł w piśmiennictwie polskim XVII i XVIII wieku. Wrocław: Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego, 2012, ss. 260.]
Obremski, Krzysztof
The subject of the following review is an over 250-page book by Dariusz Dybek entitled Anioł w piśmiennictwie polskim XVII i XVIII wieku (2012). Devoted to one subject and providing a thorough analysis of the subject matter, it can be regarded as a monograph, and in particular, a problem monograph since it is “an in-depth and source study”, as Henryk Markiewicz puts it. However, Dariusz Dybek’s assumption of the equal status of the Baroque and the Enlightenment angelofanic works and angelology is disputable because the Enlightenment sources have to be described as overwhelmingly Saxon (waving aside the division into “Saxon half century” and “Stanislavian half century” is unacceptable from the historic and literary perspective). The values of Dariusz Dybek’s book can be appreciated by way of comparison of his work with an earlier study by Danuta Künstler-Langner Anioł w poezji baroku. Dzieje postaci w kulturze dawnej Europy (2007).

Geom(et)oda [rec. Anna Kronenberg: Geopoetyka. Związki literatury i środowiska. Łódź: Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego, 2014, ss. 288.]
Kadłubek, Zbigniew
In the wake of spacial turn, we are currently observing in literature a growing interest in space, of which geopoetics is one aspect. The book Geopoetyka. Związki literatury i środowiska by Anna Kronenberg was submitted as her doctoral dissertation at the Department of Theory of Literature, Institute of Contemporary Culture at the University of Łódź. The author is known for her interest in geopoetics, ecocriticism, ecofeminism and Polish immigration literature. The reviewer of Kronenberg’s work focuses on the geopoetical value of the young researcher from Łódź. She is praised for the metaphorical character of her study and her involvement reaching far beyond the academia. On the other hand however, it is pointed out that she is unable to develop Kenneth White’s thought in the scientific discourse, as compared with Elżbieta Rybicka who does so on assumption so to speak.

The author analyses Andrzej Dobrowolski’s exquisite edition of letters of the editor of Kultura Jerzy Giedroyc and Teodor Parnicki written between 1946 and 1968. This volume of their prolific correspondence reveals a lot of previously unknown facts from the biography of the author of Słowo i ciało and the life of immigrants at the time of the Polish People’s Republic, and shows problems Parnicki had publishing his novels in the Instytut Wydawniczy PAX.

The subject of the following review is the 2014 edition of collected articles and addresses of Philipe Lacoue-Labarthe entitled Typografie. A point of reference for his uniquely understood politicality and community (audience) is provided by the theses of a Czech philospher Jan Patočka. The following article emphasizes cohesion of Lacoue-Labarthe’s thought as seen in the volume in which the French philosopher discusses various texts in humanities, including literary, philosophical and musical. Typografie is presented as a significant voice in the ongoing debate about contemporary man.

Kadłubek, Zbigniew
At the very beginning of his review, the author indicates that Notatnik i modlitewnik drogowy by Henryk Waniek is a remarkably eccentric piece of writing (in accordance with the etymology of this word as located outside centres), placing itself outside dominant discourses and modes. In Waniek’s book artistic competence and talents merge as it also contains some prints by the author. Despite the absolute originality of the title, it has been taken from a certain semantic field of meanings close to Waniek and well known to him from his Silesian peregrinations. Therefore, it can be said that the nomadic prose of this publication is part of the geopoetic trend (the author sees Silesia, sees a road, sees space for its own sake), yet it also remains characteristic of Waniek’s writing in being esoteric, esseistic, reminiscent and metaliterary.

Zniewolone przez pracę czy dzięki pracy uwolnione? [dot. A. Urbanik-Kopeć: Anioł w domu, mrówka w fabryce]
Pfeifer, Kasper
The aim of this critical essay is to analyse social and economic contexts of women’s work at the verge of 19th and 20th centuries. In the essay’s foreground are: 1) the discussion of Polish emancipatory discourses, the relation of liberal feminists to working class women; as well as 2) the characteristics of the reproductive work performed by women in the era of industrial revolution along with the impact the industrialization had on transformations of the ways genders were perceived. The article also touches upon the emancipatory role played by the factory – an attempt was made to answer the question: To what extent the commercialization of women’s work due to industrial revolutions allowed women to escape the shackles of patriarchy, and to what extent it contributed to their further entanglement in the network of dependency.

Jak wyrwać się z nostalgii [dot. P. Włodek: Kres niewinności. Obraz i upamiętnienie ery Eisenhowera w amerykańskich filmach i serialach – pomiędzy reprezentacją, nostalgią a krytycznym retro]
How to Extricate Oneself from Nostalgia [re: P. Włodek: Kres niewinności. Obraz i upamiętnienie ery Eisenhowera w amerykańskich filmach i serialach – pomiędzy reprezentacją, nostalgią a krytycznym retro]
Kostyra, Karolina
The article discussesa book by Patrycja Włodek entitled Kres niewinności. Obraz i upamiętnienie ery Eisenhowera w amerykańskich filmach i serialach – pomiędzy reprezentacją, nostalgią a krytycznym retro [The End of Innocence: The image and remembrance of the Eisenhower era in American feature films and television series – between representation, nostalgia, and critical retro style]. The author of the article positions her publication amongst other film studies research devoted to “nostalgic cinema” and enters into dialogue with concepts put forward by Włodek. The polemical pendants and glosses centre on searching for currents, titles, and readings both supporting Włodek’s considerations and transcending her interpretive framework relating to retro nostalgic (cinema of the 1980s) and retro classic (the most recent films and television series).

Szczęście w nieszczęściu. O matkach dzieci Holocaustu[dot. P. Dołowy: Wrócę, gdy będziesz spała. Rozmowy z dziećmi Holocaustu]
A Blessing in Disguise. On Holocaust Children’s Mothers [re: P. Dołowy: Wrócę, gdy będziesz spała. Rozmowy z dziećmi Holocaustu]
Grzemska, Aleksandra
The article is a discussion of Patrycja Dołowy’s book which contains conver-sations with Holocaust children, the survivors of Shoah. Its main theme are relations of Jewish children with their both “biological” and “foster” mothers. The topic is a complex one, for it relates to persons confronting the Holocaust trauma, their unstable, fractured identity, and more often than not, the lack of knowledge about one’s family fates and roots. The mother in those stories eludes a unifying, common, and typical definition. The cases described in the stories of Holocaust children undermine the simplifying socio-cultural constructs relating to mothers, liquefy the binary distinctions into “biol-ogical” and “foster”, Jewish and Polish; and transform the framework of speaking about motherhood and childhood.
