Czasopismo naukowe – rocznik internetowy – „Zoophilologica.

Słoń a sprawa literaturoznawców, czyli o zoofilologii słów kilka. Rekonesans

This article is entirely dedicated to zoophilology—a new discipline of research, which emerged with the fusion of philological sciences and modern, ethically deepened animal studies. The author— following Aleksander Nawarecki, who coined the term—is trying to define the genesis, subject of research, and methodology of zoophilology. Its most important intellectual context is the non-anthropocentric humanities, also called posthumanities. One of the main tasks of zoophilology studies is to show how writers question the evaluative opposition between men and animals. More and more often getting to know the perspective of animals—their non-human point of view, which is so difficult to imagine— is becoming one of the ambitions of modern literature and art. The role of zoophilologists is conceived as trying to analyze and interpret such “postanthropocentric” texts. It is an attempt to reach a deeper understanding of how literature enables us to put ourselves in the position of others.

The text constitutes an attempt to discuss the idea of the “animal” itself, which is an empty set. Following Jacques Derrida’s line of thought, we remain surprised, asking what links the elephant with the ant or the echidna with the hedgehog. The only benefit of the concept of the “animal” lies in revealing the way in which humans try to extricate themselves from the net designed by them for “animals,” but ultimately end up wrapping it tightly about themselves. The question about the socalled “animal” constitutes part of the battle over language that seems to have forgotten that it was born from the relation with animals; however, it preserves this knowledge not in the scientific jargon, but in those of its registers which allow people to talk about the individual relation not with the “animal,” but with the concrete individual of a concrete species.

Jak to jest być nietoperzem? Refleksje przy lekturze eseju Thomasa Nagela
Wężowicz-Ziółkowska, Dobrosława
Uniwersytet Śląski https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8423-9198
The article asks questions about the human cognitive abilities – how it is to be an animal of a species
different from one’s own. Using as a basis the doubts of the philosopher Thomas Nagel, the author proceeds to discuss the standpoint of ethnologists Frans de Waal and Konrad Lorenz, who accept the limitations of the human cognitive apparatus and language, with the help of which we describe what we call the “animal.” The author suggests that the problem of contemporary humanities and animal studies lies not in anthropodenial, but in anthropomorphism, rooted in the centrism typical of our species, which seems impossible to overcome. The author also proposes a thesis that the way to overcome this issue is for people to gain knowledge about these limitations. This knowledge, supported by interspecies empathy, developed in the process of coevolution of animal species (humans being one of them), is the most effective tool of heuristics.

In the article it is argued that the conviction that verbally expressed language (as commonly employed by humans) is necessary for thinking is not justified. Animals have been found to employ various communication systems (languages) and, though these are different from human language, they testify to consciousness and thought. Recent research among autistic people has indicated that they frequently think in images rather than words, and it is suggested that this was the original feature of human thinking and may also be the basis of animal thinking.

The article is devoted to the phenomenon of swarming and its expression in modern technologies and art. The main focus of this work is a philosophical comprehension and interpretation of the performance Mind-Controlled Cyborgroach created by the Moscow art-group “18 Apples.” The author discusses the phenomenon of the uncanny as a manifestation of entomophobia and technophobia, and she explores the ontological questions of human and animal being and compares categories of “natural” and “human” technics. The article also focuses on the problem of the Other in the context of the basic tasks of bioethics.

(Re)wizje naturalizmu w świetle badań nad zwierzętami (animal studies). Rekonesans
Piechota, Dariusz
Uniwersytet Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7943-384X
The main question discussed in this article is: Can we re-interpret naturalism’s novels or short stories from a non-human perspective? The researchers of animal studies perceive the world as an ecosystem where humans, animals, and plants live in a symbiosis. They also perceive the human as a part of nature. Moreover, with regard to Charles Darwin’s discoveries, it is worth to mention that the theorists of naturalism called the human being an animal. Naturalists introduce a new protagonist into literature called the animal hero. Thanks to animal studies, he is perceived as a subject, not a thing (as was the case earlier). What is more, we can reconstruct different relations between species. One of the most important problems for naturalism and animal studies is empathy towards other creatures. Naturalists, as well as the researchers of animal studies, use different tools to analyse and interpret novels and short stories. First of all, they introduce different narrators in order to be objective. Furthermore, they indicate parallelisms between the human and animal world, they avoid subjective comments, and sometimes they use the strategy called the stream of consciousness to present other creatures’ thoughts.

Kobiety, psy i koty. Domowa koegzystencja ludzi i zwierząt w literaturze familijnej
Kotyczka, Marzena Małgorzata
Uniwersytet Śląski
The article discusses the issue of living and thinking with pets. The author analyzes examples of popular literature, particularly books addressed to families and women, in order to seek for animal agency in the plot. The thesis is based on an assumption about the special bond between pets and female characters in such novels. Verifying the theory of Yi-Fu Tuan from his book Dominance and Affection. Making of Pets, the article questions pets as an effect of the human tendency to domination over nature and taking comfort in a coherent view of animals. Pets, according to Tuan’s theory, ought to be reflections of human desires and needs. The domination in its roots is male, but its repressive demands involve pets as well as women. This is the premise whereby the special relation between pets and female owners has evolved. That is the reason why it is important to examine the meaning of human-animal relations by considering gender. The space where the bond between women and their pets starts and develops is also significant. The home is the third main character of each novel, and maintains an actually dynamic relation with others.

Ludzkie i Nie-ludzkie. Antropologia Czesława Miłosza: człowiek wobec zwierząt
Roeske, Małgorzata
Uniwersytet Jagielloński https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0986-0835
Considerations about the human condition and humankind’s place in nature are a vital part of the works of Czesław Miłosz. Miłosz’s cosmological vision is based on a deeply dualistic structure. On the one hand, we have got the human and civilisation – which is a synonym of purposefulness and divine order; on the other hand, there is the wild, cruel and untameable nature, whose activity is full of chaos and is meaningless from the metaphysical point of view. There is a sort of inconsistency in this seemingly ordered structure of reality, which seems to constitute the principle of Miłosz’s anthropology. The human in his essence is a “paradoxical being”; it is difficult to classify him in an unambiguous way. He is considered as the only creature that is composed of God’s elements – immortal soul, consciousness, and intellect. These properties detach him from nature and bring him closer to God in the hierarchy. Still, he is a biological creature and that disgraceful fact is difficult to accept for Miłosz; therefore, an attempt to draw a clear line between
man and nature is reflected so clearly in Miłosz’s works. The purpose of the article is to analyse a few works of Czesław Miłosz with regard to the issues mentioned above. Undeniably, the ideas presented by Miłosz are deeply rooted in Western philosophy.

„Zaiste, nikt im losu zazdrościć nie może”. Robert Falcon Scott i Apsley Cherry-Garrard o swoich zwierzętach w drodze na biegun południowy
Kurek, Jacek
Uniwersytet Śląski https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0019-0006
The article is devoted to the attitudes of Robert Falcon Scott and his expedition companions towards animals on the way to the South Pole – both the animals they brought with them on the ship “Terra Nova” and those they encountered in Antarctica. Scott took 34 dogs and 19 Manchu ponies on this arduous expedition. None of them survived. This aim is to draw attention to the human dimension of the expedition, but it becomes a contribution to the history of relationships between humans and animals in Europe just before the First World War. Analysis of the reports of Robert F. Scott and Apsley Cherry-Garrard (a member of the expedition) allows us to conclude that the explorers felt a great deal of affection for the animals. In the face of their tragic fate, they often reflected on their own guilt and mistakes. The suffering of animals was marked firmly in their minds, and the only kind of justification was their desire to enrich humanity with new knowledge.

The main aim of the article is to draw attention to a different hell than that of the Nazi concentration camps, namely, the cruel test of human possibilities, impulses, and reactions that was the Siege of Leningrad. Mass famine, which had a solid scientific basis and proved to be one of the most effective weapons of the 20th century, was again used there. The besieged man, left to his survival instinct, shows an only seemingly (in)human face, which is manifested in eating domestic animals but also in cannibalism (this was a taboo issue for many years). Fortunately, the horrific experiment conducted on the city’s inhabitants revealed also successful, even heroic, attempts to maintain humanity and dignity. One of these is surely the history of the Leningrad Zoo, which functioned as usual during the siege (except for the winter of 1941–1942). It demonstrates not only the importance of bonds between man and animal, but also confirms that, in the face of suffering, famine, and fear, all beings are equal.

The author’s essay is a collection of several short, seemingly casual reflections which contain more profound themes, giving the reader much food for thought. Starting from a personal wish to explore the question of animality, the author delves into the issues of biopoetics and zootheology, before once more returning to personal reflections, which lead him to the negation of the human and the animal as equal existences under law.

The aim of this short article is to discuss the state of research in a field which attempts to combine animal studies with theology and religious studies, and to map its discourse, tentatively called “critical ecotheology” and construed as environmental ethics accompanied by a religious inspiration and theological justification which is derived from dogmas and religious attitudes of different world religions. The attempt at providing a theoretical framework for ecotheology was inspired by the pioneering work of scholars who came in September 2014 to Bonn, Germany, for a conference on human-animal relations in religious traditions. The problems brought up by their presentations provoked a discussion of the presence of animals in the thinking, practices, and rituals of various religions and their theologies, highlighting the role of religious culture in negotiating different senses of the animal. The article concludes with the idea that a review of religious and theological issues from the perspective of animal studies may lead to the revision of many concepts and theoretical paradigms within the history and anthropology of religion, while helping to articulate the significance of animals and the need for their protection in the activity of religious groups and individuals.

Reading Jacques Derrida’s essay Che cos’è la poesia? as well as poems by Rainer Maria Rilke, Thomas Hardy, and Tadeusz Kijonka, we want to argue that the animal helps us to redefine the human subject. When pondering the fuzzy boundary between the human and the non-human, man interprets himself/herself not as a subject isolated in its sublime aspirations but, rather, as a fragile connection, delicate relation with what begs for his/her protection and care.

Timothy Morton w kontekście ekokrytyki materialnej
Wesling, Donald
University of California https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1844-2504

A zwierzęce? Zwierzęce to dzikie, niepokojące, niespokojne, nieokreślone, tajemnicze, obce… Co to jest „zwierzęce”? Parafrazując Michaiła Epsteina – obrazy „zwierzęcego” w kulturze to swoiste lustro ludzkiej samoświadomości. Oddajemy do rąk Czytelników pierwszy zeszyt tematyczny czasopisma zatytułowany Zwierzęce, w którym zamieszczono artykuły różnych autorów: literaturoznawców, językoznawców, kulturoznawców i filozofów. Idea powstania czasopisma wychodzi naprzeciw współczesnym oczekiwaniom i wpisuje się w nurt interdyscyplinarnych dziedzin spod znaku „zoo”, a więc zoosemiotyki, zooantropologii, zooteologii, zoomuzykologii etc.

Gzyra, Dariusz
Uniwersytet Pedagogiczny im. KEN w Krakowie https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4659-3262
The article analyzes the position of Tom Regan (the author of a theory of animal rights) toward the admissibility of the use of force in defense of animals. The key issue here is the definitional dispute about the legitimacy of violent actions directed towards things and defining the criteria that justify such violence. Regan’s conclusion is presented in the context of different forms of violence as well as its definition, the contemporary realities of animal exploitation, and the history of direct action in defense of animals.

Nagie życie zwierząt. O wartości użytkowej Giorgio Agambena

Uniwersytet Śląski https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7992-0285
The aim of this article is to discuss Agamben’s distinction between dzoē and bios and verify if the category of bare life would be relevant to the life of animals. At first glance, following Agamben’s line of thought, one might say that the very helplessness of the modern law in the face of dzoē results in ephemeral and certainly not inalienable animal rights. Thus, what Agamben calls homo sacer would also refer to animals as animal sacrum. However, when extended to include animals, Agamben’s philosophical project shows serious constraints which are cleverly camouflaged under the linguistic argument and his rather selective interpretation of Aristotle’s works.

Za pan brat ze ślimakiem. O pewnym zwierzęcym motywie w poezji Ryszarda Krynickiego
Filipowicz, Anna
Uniwersytet Gdański https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6779-6643
A poetic interest in animals is one result of Ryszard Krynicki’s being inspired by Japanese haiku, which he combines with the distinctive meanings of Western culture. Buddhist tradition allows him to see an animal as a representative of the universe in common with humans, and as a real existencein-itself. In his poems the Eastern sensitivity and way of thinking become an opportunity to revise humanity’s imaging of nature. Paradoxically, therefore, what is spiritual allows Krynicki to experience an empirical encounter with the animal and show the conditions for the questioning of the anthropocentric paradigm.

Mieszkańcy „opacznego miniaturowego uniwersum”. Zwierzęta w twórczości W.G. Sebalda
Kończal, Katarzyna
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza
The aim of this article is to examine the ways in which the forms and presence of animals are presented in the works of the German writer, Sebald, through selected approaches in animal studies. The article shows that animalistic discourse plays an important, if not central, part in Sebald’s literary imagination, which has gone largely unnoticed by critics for a long time, due to their predominant focus on the issues of memory, the Holocaust, and melancholia. The main subjects of analysis here are the novels The Rings of Saturn and Austerlitz, which are focused predominantly on the issue of human-animal relationships both on a textual and on a visual level. Firstly, the author will characterise the images of animals depicted in Sebald’s prose, then she will examine the animal cartographies, i.e. spaces where the writer locates his non-human protagonists, and in the end, the text will analyse the poetics of contrast and analogy through which Sebald describes the entanglement of the human’s mind in the exploitation of animals. The analysis will demonstrate that the coexistence of humans and animals in Sebald’s works is not linear, but rather creates sophisticated constellations of ostensibly distanced events from various periods and sources. Sebald places an animal’s suffering right at the centre of the turbulent and disastrous history of the 19th and 20th centuries and, through this inclusive gesture of empathy towards non-human animals, strictly breaks with the anthropocentric perspective of writing.

Czy (też nie) zwierzęta. Rozważania nad zwierzęcością w poezji Lorny Crozier
Szatanik, Zuzanna
University of Silesia http://orcid.org/0000-0001-5118-4063

„Ile zwierząt zabrał Mojżesz do swojej arki?” Zwierzęce, dziecięce i poetyckie według Justyny Bargielskiej
Nawarecki, Aleksander
Uniwersytet Śląski https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7271-2080
The text is an interpretation of a poem by Justyna Bargielska titled Katullka from the Nudelman (2014) volume. The author uses the literary idea of meeting herself from many years before. The occasion was her discovery of her own childish notes showing her knowledge about the world in the form of three riddles. The most difficult and most important of them (“How many animals did Moses take onto the Ark”?) is based on the mixing of two expressions: “Noah’s Ark” and “the Ark of the Covenant” (Moses’). The deceptive question of the child forces us to seek animals in the Bible (especially in the Decalogue), which leads to surprising theological conclusions concerning relations with God and animals. In the finale of the poem, the writing of the seven-year-old girl is eaten by a roe deer; this is a symbolic suggestion of a “communion” between the child-like and the animal-like.

Czy owad to zwierzę?
Walczak, Maciej
Uniwersytet Śląski https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6313-5672
The article deals with the analysis of Polish and Russian definitions of the owad / насекомое (“insect”) lexemes. On the basis of these definitions, the author tries to answer the question whether, from the linguistic point of view, insects are perceived as animals or not. It appears that in the majority of the Polish dictionary sources, the insect is not classified as an animal, while the Russian dictionary sources seem to be more consistent in classifying the insect as an animal. According to the author, this may be the result of the fact that the Polish dictionaries reflect linguistic notions of insects and, according to these notions, insects are not animals. On the other hand, the Russian dictionaries rely on scientific premises. These premises assume that an insect is an animal.

Features of Shmelev’s zoopoetics are described in the article on the basis of the early stories, such as My Mares, Light Page, and Mary, in which images of animals are analysed in the context of Russian literature of the late 19th and early 20th centuries (Strider by Lev Tolstoy, Kashtanka by Anton Chekhov, The White Poodle and Emerald by Alexander Kuprin, and Dreams of Chang by Ivan Bunin). Shmelev’s zoopoetics is based on the philosophy of life and death, freedom and captivity, and the connection between the natural world and the world of childhood, and is actualized in anthropomorphic images of animals manifested in the texts of the writer in many ways (psychologism, spirituality, and the use of the concepts of “soul”, “destiny”, “love” “morality” and “compassion”). Animals in the stories appear as a certain indicator, because the correlation with them and the attitude to them reveal the other characters – both adults and children.

The character of the relations between linguistic and not strictly linguistic elements of awareness is
discussed upon the example of existing notions. The vocabulary material reflecting both historical and contemporary interpretations is quoted. These interpretations consider the words’ etymology. Their analysis is intended to find out the motifs which change in time, features and semantic analogies. These three elements are then consolidated in the notions of the mental and linguistic culture. Later on the character of relations is established (by placing the character in artificially created space) between the state of an animal and that of a human. The human resembles the animal, and the latter is a representative of a community in captivity, and the human observing the animals becomes an element of the collective display. The gathered information and interpretations (compared to the data from the dictionary of dreams via their semantic and mental features) make it possible to ask a question on the semantics of the mental and semantic features of the vivid experiences which are in perceptual and mental existence. These experiences shape the notions for the representatives of a specific mental culture. The notions in question are of regulating, approximate and not always realized character. These notions are especially the ones which condition the organisation of the world in linguistic and non -linguistic awareness, and as a result they influence the semantic evolution of a language as well as its users’ mentality.

Umysły zwierząt: między naiwnym antropomorfizmem a dogmatycznym antroponegacjonizmem
Wróblewski, Zbigniew
Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4477-6903
Badania nad zdolnościami poznawczymi zwierząt determinują w głównej mierze dwa przeciwstawne podejścia metodologiczne: naiwny antropomorfizm i dogmatyczny antropodenializm.

Today the psychology of human-animal interaction is a rapidly developing field of psychological research in western countries. In Russia there are some isolated works on psychological aspects of interspecies communication between humans and animals but these have not formed a separate research field so far. In order to analyse the causes of the ‘pet relationships’ phenomenon at the levels of needs and personality spheres, we conducted a comparative study of pet owners (n=44) and people who have no pets (n=39). The attached pet owners demonstrated a need for subjectification of the animal and orientation to a definite type of communication. Presentation of the results of this study to the Russian psychological community revealed the problem of acute and active polarization of the scholars regarding the assessment modus of relevance and importance of human–animal studies. Such a reaction could be determined by the level of an individual’s emotional and personal maturity rather than by theoretical or methodological issues.

Kilka uwag o obecności zwierząt w filmie i literaturze science fiction
Nieracka, Agnieszka

Z jednej strony Damien Hirst zaproponował całkowicie nowe podejście do kwestii wykorzystywania zwierząt w sztuce, kiedy zaczął wystawiać prace z cyklu Natural History (Historia naturalna), z drugiej strony zupełnie nowy „materiał” został użyty w pracy, którą można zakwalifikować do prac rzeźbiarskich.

Afekt i defekt atlasu zwierząt. Narracyjny wymiar historii naturalnej w malarstwie Waltona Forda
Schollenberger, Justyna
Uniwersytet Warszawski https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6752-7737
This paper aims at the problem of realism in the artistic representation of animals. Contemporary animal studies recognize the problem of narratives in which animals serve as a negative point of reference to humans or as a symbol, always referring to some cultural story. In this context the anthropocentric art of Walton Ford is particularly interesting. The painter is openly enthusiastic about the symbolic and narrative uses of animals in culture, and yet in his paintings he manages to represent animals’ otherness, and their ability not to be „tamed” by our schemes.

„Ludzkie owady” i człowiek – o dalekiej bliskości życia w niedoli i wspaniałości
Gielata, Ireneusz
Akademia Techniczno-Humanistycznaw Bielsku-Białej https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1097-9107
The author analyzes E.T.A. Hoffmann’s short story Master Flea, focusing mainly on the scene of the telescope duel between two biologists: Jan Swammerdam and Anton Leeuwenhoek. This scene triggers reflection on discovering the closeness between humans and insects – a closeness that became possible once man started to question the possibility of being different from animals. Even though Swammerdam equated human beings with insects, he never overcame the limitations of anatomic perception. It was only the generation of Romantics that discovered the similarity of fate between humans and insects – a similarity, as Maurice Maeterlinck called it, of “misery and greatness”. The author traces the evolution in the ways of perceiving insects and writing about them; an evolution which was initiated by Montaigne’s essay Apology for Raymond Sebond and later developed by E.T.A. Hoffmann, Henry David Thoreau and Maurice Maeterlinck.

Nino De Vita: poezja sycylijska między dialektalnością a zwierzęcością
Malicka, Paulina
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The purpose of this article is to draw attention to the issue of human-animal relationships in con- temporary works of poetry and prose by Nino De Vita (b. 1950) – a Sicilian born in Marsala, for whom the local dialect of Cutusìu contrade becomes the language of expression. The author leaves out of his writings anthropocentric models and introduces into them narratives concerning various forms of life marked by common and indivisible history. Both animal and human characters share similar fates, experience the same emotions, reciprocate feelings, suffer and feel fear. Still, what unites the human and animal world most is the language, or rather the dialect, of Marsala – a com- mon channel of interspecies communication. The expression of the animal nature in people who wish to most spontaneously and sincerely express their own emotions and moods, resorts to dialectal sound, the mother tongue, characterized by great intimacy but also violence. Finally, the dialectality and animality of Nino De Vita’s work involve going beyond the boundaries, tracking and leaving traces as well as marking the territory for fear of loss and being left. This poetry is written in the name of ‘another him’ and for him.

Zwierzęce początki muzyki. O Ptasim radiu Juliana Tuwima
Filipowicz, Anna
Uniwersytet Gdański https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6779-6643
The essay is concerned with the topic of archaic “ethological tales”, which often present non-anthropocentric definitions of an animal as an emotional, rational, aesthetic creature – not formulated in opposition to the human. This point of view also appears in the poetry of Julian Tuwim, who connects the mythical idea of interspecies community with the Darwinian theory of evolution. In Ptasie radio/Bird radio (1938) he shows, for example, that the concept of melic poetry inherited from the ancient Greeks, has a biological base and comes from birds’ vocalisation. Analysing birds’ mating songs leads him to the idea that not only does man have the ability to generate aesthetic sounds, but that he also shares this ability also with other animals. Today, his intuition can be confirmed also in the field of genetic research.

The article is devoted to the literary representation of the wolf, and the texts analysed include Hermann Hesse’s Steppenwolf and Mark Rowlands’ The Philosopher and the Wolf. In both texts the wolf becomes the mirror in which the man’s inner life is reflected, and the authors search for the answers to existential questions in the wolfish nature. “And so, the Steppenwolf had two natures, a human and a wolfish one. This was his fate, and it may well be that it was not a very exceptional one.” Those words of Hermann Hesse refer to the complicated, split personality of the main protagonist and the complex nature of every man. Harry is partly a man, who desires social respect and the comforts of the middle-class life, and shares human ideas and interests, and partly a wild beast, who mocks these vain and absurd desires, and remains untamed and impulsive. Mark Rowlands’ wolf is not only part of the author’s inner self, but a wild animal, with which the American philosopher spent 11 years of his life. The wolf companion changes completely the man’s way of thinking, becoming an inspiration for philosophical considerations over the nature of love, death, happiness and humanity, the purposefulness of human actions, the sources of despair and hope, the nature of the fear of death. The wolf’s company makes it possible for Rowlands to find his human nature, makes him eventually become a different person: of partly human and partly wolfish nature. In both cases the wolf (being either part of a man’s personality or a real wild companion) determines the protagonists’ lives and helps them understand themselves.

The aim of this paper is to examine the multidimensional way of presenting dogs in selected German works. Dogs trigger a whole range of emotions in man, such as attachment and protectiveness, but also the dangerous instinct associated with the desire for power and domination. Dogs can be both devoted companions and friends to man but also objects of ruthless training. Therefore, Theodor Fontane’s and Thomas Mann’s works, which present the function of animals in a surprising light, may be an excellent point of reference.

Obrazy zwierząt udomowionych i dzikich w paremiach polskich, rosyjskich i ukraińskich

Animalisms as the animalistic components of paremiaes play an important role in the semantic codes in Paremiology. The comparative and contrastive analysis of animalisms in the structure of Polish, Russian and Ukrainian paremiaes with the use of a biocentric approach allows us to describe the general and specific features of behaviour and characters that exist in the most widespread paremic images of wild and domestic animals. The animalistic images are typical of: the Polish, Russian and Ukrainian culture. The process of describing each category of animal which takes place in the paremiologic units supports the reconstruction of fragments of a linguistic world-image and allows us to observe a correlation between such concepts as Animal and Human Being.

Zwierzęta pozaludzkie jako podmioty polityki. Koncepcja zoopolis i jej krytyka

The interests of nonhuman animals within political philosophy have been and are still overlooked and underestimated. Recognition by modern science, and – increasingly – ethics, of the subjectivity and vulnerability of many animals does not extend to recognizing them as anything more than a secondary object of politics. In recent years, however, new concepts have emerged emphasizing the subjectivity and political agency of nonhuman animals. One of them is the concept of zoopolis by Sue Donaldson and Will Kymlicka. It postulates the use of political and legal categories that previously defined only men: citizenship, denizenship and sovereignty. Through citing earlier attempts at politicization of the animal detriment issue, the article presents the major hypothesis of the zoopolis concept and discusses some examples of its previous criticism.

Oddajemy do rąk Czytelników drugi numer monograficzny interdyscyplinarnego czasopisma, zatytułowany Reprezentacje, który zawiera artykuły filo- logów i neofilologów (literaturoznawców i językoznawców), kulturoznawców, filmoznawców, filozofów i psychologów.

The article is an attempt to utilize the pre-philosophical etymological meanings of the word subject
in a proposal for the reflection that fits into the discussion on the possibilities of new posthumanistic
approaches to the matter of subject. Its first part comprises etymological inquiry, inspired by the philosophy of M. Heidegger and the proposal of K. Okopien, into the Greek word ὑποκείμενον, the Latin subiectum and the Polish podmiot. In the second part, three new, ethically oriented proposals for perceiving the problem in the perspective of studying animals have been derived from the three former meanings of the Polish subject – a foundling, fraud, and bedding.

‘Ogród zoologiczny’ rosyjskich wyobrażeń mentalnych. Wariacje i dynamika reproduktywnego obrazu (2)

Uniwersytet Śląski https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6575-5736
The character of the relations between linguistic and not strictly linguistic elements of awareness is discussed basing upon the example of the existing notions of the zoological garden. The vocabulary material reflecting both historical and contemporary interpretations is quoted. These interpretations include the etymology of the words. Their analysis is aimed at finding out the motives that change in time, features and semantic analogies. These three elements are then consolidated in the notions of the mental and linguistic culture. Later on, the character of the relations between the state of an animal and a human is established (by placing the characters in an artificially created space). The human resembles the animal and the latter is a representative of a community in captivity, and the human observing the animals becomes an element of the collective display. The gathered information and interpretations (compared to the data from the dictionary of dreams via their semantic and mental features) make it possible to ask a question on the semantics of the mental and semantic features of the vivid experiences that exist in perceptual and mental planes. These experiences shape the notions for the representatives of a specific mental culture. The notions in question are of regulating, approximate and not always realized character. As the result, these notions, and especially the ones that condition the organisation of the world in linguistic and non -linguistic awareness, influence the
semantic evolution of a language as well as its users’ mentality.

The article is a presentation of spring rituals associated with animals in the Polish countryside, recorded by ethnographers up to the beginning of the twentieth century. In traditional Polish rural society, rituals associated with the Slavs beliefs and symbolism, which were to symbolically start the new vegetative year, were among the most important activities of worship ‑ the choice of animals for the ritual. These beliefs were so firmly embedded in the consciousness of the traditional communities that survived until the early twentieth century in the form of customs and the way of how animals were treated by the hosts. The relationship of man with the animal was very characteristic of the rural community, as it was associated with the supplementation of the basic needs of the host, which translated into a concern for the animals’ health and their lives. In the opinion of the former inhabitants of the village, caring for the animals apparently manifested in the practice of magic that was to prevent and ward off spells and diseases.

Czy zwierzęta mają język?
Rode, Barbara
Uniwersytet Warszawski https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9815-3889
The belief that only humans use language has dominated in science for years. Linguists are especially sensitive to the notion that animals can use or create language. They argue that all species other than human can communicate but they do not use language, as it is reserved for people only. It is important to notice that animal psychology is a new and still far underdeveloped scientific field. More and more studies are revealing that animals can and do think, feel and communicate in a meaningful way. Recently, new studies have supported the hypothesis that some animals do use language. The communication systems that they use have all or most of the characteristics of a language. Con Slobodchikoff has shown that prairie dogs have grammar, can create language and use dialects in their communication with one another. Their pups learn their language in a similar way as human babies do. This article is meant to question the notion that animals do not use and create language.

Pollo, Simone
Uniwersytet Rzymski ,,La Sapienza" https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9823-4985
Teorie etyki zwierzęcej głównego nurtu, reprezentowane np. przez Singera i Regana, opowiadają się za zachowaniami żywieniowymi wykluczającymi spożywanie jakichkolwiek produktów pochodzenia zwierzęcego. Zgodnie z takimi ujęciami tematu, w naszych społeczeństwach i w obecnych warunkach życia, rezygnacja z żywności pochodzenia zwierzęcego jest obowiązkiem w świetle wymogów normatywnych teorii etyki. Taki sposób ujmowania wegetarianizmu pozwala uniknąć trudności argumentów głównego nurtu i pozwala trafniej ujmować bogactwo i różnorodność rzeczywistych wyborów ludzi w kwestii wegetarianizmu w sferze zwyczajowych doświadczeń natury moralnej.

Negatywny wpływ europejskiej filozofii na sposób traktowania zwierząt
Probucka, Dorota

The text analyses the process of naming Animals by humans. This process is treated here as a complex
phenomenon that has its psychological, sociological, social, philosophical and linguistic aspects. In the text, the Author focuses on two sides of the coin: naming animals can be treated as an act of subjectivisation, but on the other hand, by giving names to animals, humans try to reproduce an anthropocentric hierarchy of species. In this context it is worth analyzing not only giving names, but also abandoning or changing them.

Podmiototwórczy potencjał intersubiektywności międzygatunkowej
Gzyra, Dariusz
Uniwersytet Pedagogiczny im. KEN w Krakowie https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4659-3262
Intersubjectivity, understood as a relationship between different perspectives, that creates a common space, accessible to more than one cognizing subject, is the basic trait of our presence in the world. The realization of our capability potential for intersubjective relations is related to the realization of a similar potential of the other subject of such relationships. We recognize the subjectivity of others through the reference to ourselves – out of necessity. This process is connected with the recognition of similarities and differences. In the article I am analyzing the nature of this process and the risks associated with possible underestimation and overestimation of the value of the other. The principle of seeking sufficient similarity apparently results in the automatic exclusion of a certain scope of dissimilarity – for example, of what is too different for the creation of subjective, intersubjective relations. I am trying to show that the recognition of the dissimilarities of the others does not have to involve their devaluation. On the contrary, it presents a challenge to the ethical imagination and is an indispensable component of intersubjectivity. I am pointing out that effective interspecific communication, which takes into account the importance of the affective component and the meeting of the diverse experiencing corporeality, is also an important aspect of the described relationships. I am also pointing out that the question about the subjectivity occurring in relationships is also an ethical and political problem of great importance.

O utraconych kończynach węża, który kusił Ewę
Mulder, Eric W.A.
Muzeum Natura Docet Wonderryck w Twente https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7334-5881
Istnieje wiele obrazów i rzeźb przedstawiających znany motyw z ogrodu Eden: uwodzenie Ewy. Proces ostatecznej utraty kończyn i wydłużenia ciała u (proto -)wężów to świetny przykład ewolucji.

„Element animalny”, czyli o zwierzętach w grach wideo…
Pitrus, Andrzej
Uniwersytet Jagielloński https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5381-3377
The article focuses on the representations of animals in video games. Andrzej Pitrus remarks that while there are many examples of animal characters in games, most of them are only acting subjects “disguised” as animals. Few projects try to reconstruct true identity of animals. Yet, the author of the article critically researches interesting attempts made by studios and game designers. Many of them are in fact art projects, but there are also a few realistic animal characters in mainstream games. Recently they have been becoming more and more sophisticated, thanks to the use of new technologies, e.g. motion capture, which provide tools necessary to adequately represent animal behaviours.

The article introduces the history of the horse in the times of the First Polish Republic, focusing particularly on its law aspects. The horse as a tool and a symbol of the ruling class played a key role in creating human civilisation, sometimes also through destruction. Furthermore, the Author outlines possible paths for further research into the issue of the horse influence on the society of the feudal system.

Gatunki stowarzyszone: ogary polskie i ich ludzie
Dąbrowska, Magdalena
Uniwersytet Marii Curie‑Skłodowskiej
Polish hounds, an old breed of hunting dogs reconstructed in the 50s, illustrate the history of naturoculture. Like Donna Haraway’s cyborgs, Polish hounds transgress three binary oppositions. Firstly, they transgress the boundary between reality and fiction, as the dogs’ physical bodies are co -created by cultural narrations. Secondly, Polish hounds are a product of selective breeding, so they transgress the boundary between nature and culture. Finally, the boundary between nature and technology is blurred. Their bodies are object of technological interventions and scientific research that are to enable their further existence. In addition, Polish hounds and their people encourage reflection on human -animal collectives, where human and non -human lives are interconnected. The dogs and humans provide example of co -existence and embodiment of trans -species solidarity and thus they create a starting point of thinking about post -humanist connections and collectives.

Biedne zwierzęta patrzą na ludzi. Na marginesach książki Piotra Krupińskiego „Dlaczego gęsi krzyczały?” Zwierzęta i Zagłada w literaturze polskiej XX i XXI wieku
Markiewicz, Miłosz
Uniwersytet Śląski https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7350-4301
The article presents a reflection on the presence of animals in the Holocaust and in the narratives that
underpinned it. The starting point of this consideration is the book by a Polish literary scholar – Piotr
Krupiński „Why did the Geese Shriek?” Animals and the Holocaust in Polish Literature of the 20th and 21st Century. The author juxtaposes the book with the comic book Maus by Art Spiegelman and the nazi propaganda film The Eternal Jew. The article raises questions about, among others, suffering of animals, a human–animal dualism in the context of the Holocaust, zoomorphism, and controversies over the so called animal holocaust. The author points out that we should remember the human is also an animal, especially at the time of the reflection on the Holocaust, which reveals the issue of „community of death”.
