The works of Alexander Goldstein from the perspective of his friends and acquaintances

Abstract

The paper presents the opinions and characteristics of the work of the Russian-Israeli writer and
journalist Alexander Goldstein (1957–2006), winner of, among others, the Andrei Bely Prize for his novel Quiet Fields (2006). The author of the paper recalls the statements of the writer’s friends and acquaintances, who are mostly enthusiasts of his work (Roman Katsman, Sergey Orobiy, Stanislav L’vovskiy, Yelena Fanaylova and others). The article emphasizes the importance of Goldstein’s creative achievements for contemporary Russian literature and a relatively small circle of his readers. Attention is also paid to the causes and consequences of the departure of the author of Parting from Narcissus from essays, which brought him popularity and prestige, to novel forms. Based on the opinions of experts in Goldstein’s prose, an attempt was made to describe its distinctive features, which determine the everlasting value of his essays and novels.
