The journal Problemy Prawa Karnego in its original form was published from the early 1970s until 2005, becoming a respected and recognized academic position in the field of criminal law, broadly defined. In its current form, it has been published as an semi-annual. The subject matter of the journal invariably includes issues in the field of substantive criminal law, criminal procedural law, criminal executive law, criminology, criminology, international criminal process, comparative criminal law and process, criminal fiscal law and process, misdemeanor law and proceedings in misdemeanor cases, as well as issues related to the problems of Criminal Compliance and other issues of an interdisciplinary nature, e.g. from the borderline of penal science and medicine.

Each issue of the journal discusses current problems of criminal law and criminal procedure, with particular emphasis on normative changes in these areas of law. The most controversial issues and legal constructions in the field of criminalistics are also discussed. The authors undertake both purely theoretical considerations, devoted to the problems they consider, as well as analysis of the solutions in force from the perspective of practical application of the law. This makes the journal addressed not only to a narrow circle of representatives of law sciences, but also to a wide community of practitioners, in particular to judges, prosecutors, attorneys and defence counsels.

The publisher and the editorial board make effort to ensure that the scientific papers published in the journal are of the highest scientific level. With this in mind, the Editorial Board has invited prominent Polish and foreign representatives of substantive criminal law, criminal procedure law, criminalistics and other branches of criminal law. The same consideration determines the introduction of the double-blind review system and the selection of reviewers from among distinguished experts in the subject of the publications under review.

The journal is published in an electronic version, to which readers have open access, which is part of the idea of promoting the science of criminal law sensu largo. Apart from that, it is published in a paper version, intended for the supporters of the traditional form of publication.

The journal Problemy Prawa Karnego is published in open access (the contents of the journal are available to the public, free of charge).

All issues of the journal are published under a Creative Commons license. Archival issues (2017-2018), originally were published in a different version, have also been published under the Creative Commons license by the decision of the Silesia University Press in 2019. The journal does not charge any publication fees.
